Great Article! I'm off for a few more feet of City Streets and another Fringe show after a HOHO day. Performances have ranged from interesting to really great! Must catch up on reviews though.

I do not think Downtown is dismissed on this forum. South Street seaport is.

The architecture of downtown is interesting with the Muni Bulding, Brooklyn Bridge, Boss Tweed Courthouse, Woolworth Building and now the Geary residence. And there are better restaurants.

The area is more attuned to the imagination as there is a great deal of historical and economic history downtown.

I have not been to the Native American Museum in 6 years, but if it has not improved it is not worth the visit, although if you enjoy Beaux-Arts, it is worth a stop. That highly romantic interpretation of the world has an allegory of the continents as part of the front ornamnetation, all four continents.

Someone needs to give St Paul's Chapel they are being offensive.

Nelsonian-We have the NY Times delivered to the door every day which grants us unlimited access to the on-line site. I beleive that if you do not have a subscription you can use the site 20 times a month without payment.

The travel articles are usually taken from the Sunday paper but appear electronically on Friday.

Adu, you can read 20 articles on-line in a month, and then you have to subscribe. I have managed to get around it by registering a different e-mail on another computer. I don't go there a lot but just like to keep in touch with what is happening in NYC now my daughter is living there.

When we were there a few years ago now we enjoyed the South Seaport downtown area.

Understood. I am sure your daughter knows the City very well by now, especially if she is a musician. They usually have gigs in the parts of the city where there are many activities.

Auduchamp, thanks for posting the link to the NY Times article. I love downtown and have stayed in Tribeca a few times, financial district a few times, and many more times in very lower Soho (I guess it isn't technically downtown but I can walk to Tribeca and get downtown easily from there).

On my trip a few wks ago w/my 21 yr old son, I spent time at night in the LES. I was taken by surprise re how active the area is at night! Lots of music clubs, and we ran across very interesting performance art on Orchard St. (around 152 Orchard where we were waiting to get into Tammany Hall). I can't even describe the performance art but it was very interesting to say the least.

In early Oct. my husband and I are staying at Thompson LES, my 1st time staying in the LES. I won an auction for 2 nights at that hotel. We are going to try to stay in the LES and downtown area the whole weekend, so that NY Times article really helps.

LES starts on Thursday night and ends on Sunday AM about 4 AM, for those who do not know where the after hours clubs are located.

Here are some of my favorite places, we live just north of LES:

Kossars-store made bialys
Donut Plant-could be best donuts in the city
Economy candy-they have almost every packaged candy plus licorice, turkish delight, chocolate, nuts, by the pound.
Pickle Guys-that is what they sell. If you can swing it, buy the pickled pineapple it is absolutely addictive.
Il Labotorio del Gelato-Could be sold in Florence. The hazelnut is especially good.
Essex Market-an odd combination of Latino provisions and hipster food kiosks.

And for watches which are all made by hand and unlike each other, Dedrgumo. Out of our price range but beautiful designed and crafted watches.

Have been to Economy Candy many times when the kids were younger, love it.

I will definitely try the Pickle Guys. I haven't had pickles in the LES since Guss' defected. Will also put Kossars, the Gelato, and lunch at the meatball Stop on the walking list for the weekend. Thanks for the recs. I thought about brunch on Sunday at Essex but it sounds like it could be a zoo.

We've done all the tours at the Tenement Museum, so this time we may do one of the LES History Project tours. I've seen good reviews of those tours.

I was able to get tickets to the 9/11 Memorial also. Should be a great weekend downtown.

Essex is a zoo, and a place we like better called Clinton Street Bakery. If you can go during the week they have table service and some of the best bisquits, scones, and pancakes in the city.

Also for a snack try a bomboloni at Falai.

Thanks for that link, Adu. We can no longer get the NYT delivered, so we get it <i>through the mail,</i> if you can believe it. My husband will not give up the feel of paper in his hands and the opportunity to coat everything with printers' ink :) It's really expensive and we don't take the Sunday times anymore because of it, so all I do now is read the book review section online on Sundays. I would have missed this article had you not posted it. Leah's Dress Shop onthe LES was one of my favorite places to shop for clothes when we lived in NYC, now long gone but not forgotten. We used to go to Orchard Street to buy my son's blue blazers and grey flannels for school... how I miss those days!

There is a lot of schlock on Orchard Street. There are only one or two quality places left but there are more and more stores opening with unique products like the Japanese watch store described above and MastihaShop where they sell products from the isle of Chios made of mastiha.
