Got my tix...surprisingly it's still the AMEX pre-sale and Saturdays are very very full already!

Any other opinions regarding "Next to Normal"? I am thining about seeing that play on Sunday night next week. It is one of the only plays available on Sunday evenings. I am also seeing "Oleanna" and "Memphis" on the same trip, and I am seeing the touring show of August, Osage County in Nov.

PamSF, did you end up seeing Next to Normal?

missypie Sep 18th, 2009 10:13 AM

I bought the soundtrack of Next to Normal and love it. Just know it's not sweetness and light.

Centralparkgirl Sep 21st, 2009 07:03 PM

I liked 'Next to Normal' because the cast is great and although the subject matter is tough, I found it moving. What I didn't like about the music was that I felt many of the songs sounded alike. I only heard the music that one time during the performance; maybe I would feel differently if I had the soundtrack. Who knows? But, I still recommend the play to anyone who likes very strong drama.

Billy Elliot-terrific dancing.

I can't believe I just saw this. Jude Law in Hamlet in NYC? amyb, I need a full report afterwards!

We saw Wicked last summer and loved the performance and the theatre. Went to Jersey Boys and found the seats to be most uncomfortable and therefore took away from our enjoyment of the performance. We were told that the older theatres had the smaller seats and the newer ones like the Gershwin had larger ones. Is there a site on the internet where we could check this out before purchasing tickets?

Centralparkgirl Sep 23rd, 2009 01:40 PM

yk - going to Hamlet Nov 10th - will report back.

yk2004 Sep 23rd, 2009 01:43 PM

Y'all are making me jealous! [-(

amyb Sep 24th, 2009 07:25 AM

I'm going in 4 weeks, YK. If I'm still coherent and intelligible after, I'll post a report! :-)

Centralparkgirl Sep 24th, 2009 07:35 AM

amyb - why? It's only 3+ hours - LOL

PamSF Sep 24th, 2009 08:22 AM

emd3~Haven't been to NYC yet~going 10/7. I am hoping to convince dear spouse to see "Next to Normal" as yet we only have tix for "God of Carnage".

amyb Sep 24th, 2009 08:29 AM

CentralParkGirl, have you SEEN the video trailers of him in this? It's not the length of the performance, it's the quality of it that may render me speechless! <drool>

Centralparkgirl Sep 24th, 2009 10:17 AM

amyb - oh, I see! No I haven't seen the trailers of him, but I must confess that although I ADORED him in 'The Talented Mr. Ripley' and 'The Holiday,' he's dropped in my estimation because of his behavior off the screen. I'm still looking forward to him being Hamlet!

PamSF - will you be here on the 10th or 11th? If so, check out Openhouseny. It's a great weekend!

CPG: I will confess to doing a Netflix marathon on the weekends leading up to Hamlet. ;-) You need to see Breaking and Entering...big, big sigh. A bit light on plot, but with the bonus of Martin Freeman (The Office - UK) too. I just look the other way on the personal stuff.

This will wet your whistle for Hamlet and perhaps explain my near-euphoria (scroll down for video):

OMG, amyb, I bet even if Jude Law were speaking Molvanian, you'd still be drooling. =P~

Will you be waiting for him at the stage door afterwards?

BTW, he looks very thin to me. I think he looks better with a bit more meat on him.

"Superior Donuts" is on Broadway in Previews now. SO EASY to recommend. Great play -- saw this at Steppenwolf in Chicago. See this if you can.
Have a great time!

PamSF Sep 28th, 2009 02:51 PM

I have "Superior Donuts" on my might do list for Manhattan. Thanks for reminding me.

God of Carnage was unbelievable. I hope you get to see that. I love South Pacific for traditional musical - although somewhat dated, it's very beautiful and you can see the new and improved Lincoln Center.

emd3 Sep 28th, 2009 05:28 PM

I reviewed "Memphis" (which is in previews at the Shubert theater) on a separate thread- if you are interested, search for Memphis and it will come up.

I am seeing "Oleana" tomorrow night (Julia Stiles and Bill Pulman in that Mamet play). I'll review it on here also...
