North Carolina Fodorites......

How about a Fodorites get-together around Raleigh/Chapel Hill/Durham sometime after the holidays? Would anybody else be interested? I think there's a few Carolinians on this board, and maybe we might get a few Fodorites from Virginia and South Carolina........ Just a thought! :-)

sognatrice2 Sep 29th, 2004 05:29 PM

Gee, bonniebroad, I sure wish I could be in the nighborhood-we have a place at Kerr Lake, and come down once in awhile- I think your idea sounds like fun. Too bad I'm chained to my job up here in NY right now, or I'd jump in a minute! Hope you get some responses and have a good time!
I always miss that beautiful red dirt!!!

Wildflower Sep 29th, 2004 05:35 PM

bonniebroad, I like your idea. I am new in this area and would like to meet other fodorites. My husband and I were thinking about going to Raleigh to the Museum of Art to see Picasso and Matisse exhibit so we could do that at the same time. My husband would like to come too.

Tandoori_Girl Sep 29th, 2004 07:20 PM

Hey, bonnie, how about if we Floridians made a special trip to NC so we can party in our 2nd favorite state :-d

bonniebroad Sep 29th, 2004 07:32 PM

You come right on up, Tandoori Girl!!! When you start eating our Pork BBQ and Banana Pudding, you won't want to go home!!! :-d (I know, I know........ you've got all that wonderful seafood and Key Lime Pie!) :p

bonniebroad Sep 29th, 2004 07:36 PM

Sognatrice, maybe we'll be getting together when you happen to be home......... keep an eye on the Board! :-) (About our beautiful red dirt..... my dog LOVES it, too, especially bringing it in on the rugs!!! >:o )

Wildflower, welcome to the area. Hope you will be very happy here. Would be delighted to meet you & your husband ....... Let's hope this works out! :-)

Tandoori_Girl Sep 29th, 2004 07:40 PM

What's that funky cake pie thing. Was it chess pie? What's that? I liked it ((Y)) Maybe it wasn't chess pie...

Tandoori_Girl Sep 29th, 2004 07:42 PM

I guess I should tell you I had it in Cashiers. That might help. Some local favorite there.

bonniebroad Sep 29th, 2004 07:48 PM

TG, I wonder if you had ShooFly Pie??? That's actually Amish from Pennsylvania, but has been "transported" here in some areas. The cakey part is almost ginger-bready, then a molasses bottom, with wonderful crumbs on top??? We do have yummy chess pies, but there's nothing cakey about them???? :?

Diana Sep 30th, 2004 03:35 AM

Hi bonnie!

Count me in. I'd love to meet up with you and some of the other posters.

Come on up TG! :) (Anyone else is certainly welcome too.)

I think it would be neat to organize a fodorite's cruise. Wouldn't THAT be fun?

mlw Sep 30th, 2004 03:37 AM

bonniebroad...sounds like a good idea.I live north of Raleigh. Have never met a Fodorite!

dan_woodlief Sep 30th, 2004 05:02 AM

I would probably be interested in attending. The closer to Durham/Chapel Hill the better unless on the weekend.

DeborahB Sep 30th, 2004 05:49 AM

I might be able to. I'm in Charlotte though.

CarrieK Sep 30th, 2004 06:12 AM

Hi bonniebroad...I'm planning a move right now, but would be interested in meeting some Fodorites as I won't know a soul in the state!!

GoTravel Sep 30th, 2004 07:00 AM

Why don't we have one in Charleston for the NC, SC, GA, and Florida fodorites?

Kal Sep 30th, 2004 08:54 AM

bb,
Come on. Admit it! You just wanna show off your new hot self! ;)

Speaking of which, I still have to drop about 30# before T'giving for the Fodor's Yountville GTG and about 10# more to fit in my Speedos for Kauai. :'(

bonniebroad Sep 30th, 2004 08:58 AM

Kal, don't let the news get out that you plan to wear a Speedo on Kauai!!! =-o All the ladies on this board will plan trips at the same time and mob the island ... :-d

Kal Sep 30th, 2004 09:06 AM

As long as it's not really cold and I don't put it on backwards....again.

leahinsc Sep 30th, 2004 09:08 AM

I think a get-together sounds great! This website has been a lifesaver for me on many trips!

bonniebroad Sep 30th, 2004 01:57 PM

Hey again guys...... would those of you expressing interest like to tell me where you live (I'm in Raleigh), then I can better judge the most convenient meeting place. I think probably Raleigh will be the best for the majority but I'd like to hear where everybody is coming from, just in case. (I'm thinking about Ri-Ra Irish Pub or Greenshield's Pub in the City Market. Whaddya think, guys? ;;) ) I believe we can come up with quite a little group!!! (Let me know your ideas for a meeting place, if you have any!)

Thanks! :-)

Diana Sep 30th, 2004 02:15 PM

I'm in Raleigh.

bb, someplace along 40 or off the beltline might be easier to get to/find parking than downtown - just a thought.

I guess it would depend on whether we are looking at dinner also or just looking for a place to gather.

There are also some really great new places to go. Dining out is another hobby of ours :)

If we are looking at trying to make it central, we could have it someplace along 40 like Capital City Chop House at Aviation Parkway - that would be more convenient for the Chapel Hill and Durham folks. (There are also other places out in that general area.)

I think it's a great idea!

leahinsc Sep 30th, 2004 03:40 PM

I live in Asheville. Raleigh would be fine for a weekend if we knew in advance. Charlotte would be closer of course.

iceeu2 Sep 30th, 2004 03:44 PM

Thought surely you guys would be doing a pig pickin! Think about GoTravel's suggestion and have a combined multi-state get together....say, somewhere in the middle!

dan_woodlief Sep 30th, 2004 06:38 PM

I live not very far from Southpoint Mall. Definitely something along 40 would be easier but not so important if on the weekend. I work in Burlington and have two young kids, so weekdays are tough.

bonniebroad Sep 30th, 2004 06:52 PM

Guys....... we'll definitely do it on a weekend. I'm sure that would be easier for most people! And I'm thinking we should have dinner........ What do others think? :-)

mlw Oct 1st, 2004 03:49 AM

Dinner sounds like a good idea to me...anywhere near Raleigh/Durham. Somewhere along the I-40 corridor perhaps...there are probably a lot of us within an hour or so either way on 40/85.

reneeinva Oct 1st, 2004 04:47 AM

I am in Williamsburg, VA, and I would love to drive to Raleigh for a GTG!!

Diana Oct 1st, 2004 04:50 AM

Good idea Dan.

There are lots of really nice places to eat at Streets at Southpoint - PF Changs, Big Bowl, etc.

That would also be pretty central for everyone.

bb, why don't you keep this in your mind and bring it up again shortly after the holidays? It sounds like we could get enough together to make it fun. If not, you and I can go find a tea room and have some watercress sandwiches with the crusts cut off and some sweetea and compare recipes! :)

bonniebroad Oct 1st, 2004 05:32 AM

Diana, The Streets at Southpoint could be a very good spot ....... you have the Firebird Grill and Maggiano's there, too. I am thinking of a timeframe sometime between the holidays and Spring. I think we can get together a good group; I've only just posted this, and look at the response! =-o (And, Diana, we will definitely have to do that girly tea thing sometime! :-) )

Keep the responses coming, guys! So glad you're all enthused....

dan_woodlief Oct 1st, 2004 08:21 AM

Looking forward to it. I have hoped someone would organize a get-together around here for a while. Of course, at that point I will lose some anonymity and have to behave myself better. Diana, at first I thought you were saying you could compare recipes with me. I like to eat but don't have much time for cooking : ) Sognatrice2, interesting that you have a place at Kerr Lake and live in NY. I am originally from Henderson, right next to Kerr Lake. I will have to bring along my camera. I can see a big group photo in front of the Southpoint fountain : )

earlxx Oct 4th, 2004 04:03 AM

Where and when?

bonniebroad Oct 4th, 2004 04:28 AM

Earlxx, sometime after Christmas......by Spring. No decision on location yet. Where are you from? Hope you will be able to join us...... :-)

ncgrrl Oct 4th, 2004 10:10 AM

Sounds like fun. But I am conflicted because I like my privacy. Maybe a Halloween costume party?

Pat2003 Feb 21st, 2005 03:23 AM

ttt

audreyh1 Feb 21st, 2005 05:24 AM

I would be interested too! I live about an 1 1/2 north of Raleigh.

tpatricco Feb 21st, 2005 06:36 AM

What happened to your GTG? Come on now! JUST DO IT!!! It's fun! Trish :)

bonniebroad Aug 1st, 2005 07:56 AM

Guys, thought I would pull up this old post to review what was discussed last Fall about a North Carolina get-together since I just saw the new post regarding one. I had hoped for a GTG this past Spring, but my schedule was too busy to arrange it.

I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'll start with this idea: a dinner GTG at Firebird's Rocky Mountain Grill at The Streets of Southpoint, Durham on Saturday, November 12th (if I talk to the manager, and could work it out.) Maybe others who've arranged GTGs could give me some ideas, but I'm thinking everyone pays cash for their dinner, wears a name-tag with your Fodor's nickname (that's all you have to reveal about yourself if you prefer .. nccgirl, feel free to wear your Halloween mask! :p Come to think of it, I have feathered eyeglasses from N.O. :D )

From reviewing our old post, I think this Durham location might be the most convenient one for the majority of people who expressed interest in getting together. I'll just throw this date & place out as a possibility to start the ball rolling (nothing written in stone), and see what comes back here. You can also e-mail me at [email protected]. Hope we will get a great response .... :-)

Diana Aug 1st, 2005 08:14 AM

I work in the Park and I know there are several who are in Chapel Hill and Durham and Raleigh and environs, so Streets at Southpoint is a good central location.

There's a PF Changs there also which is very good and you don't have to deal with the mall parking at all since it is across the street from the mall and stand-alone. (The parking there at S@SP can be a BEAR.)

Maybe we could see who all would like to come and check on whether it would be better as an after-work-on-a-Friday function or a weekend thing.

It's better for me to be after work as I live pretty far from Durham (almost to Fuquay), but I'll go with whatever works for everyone else! :)

bonniebroad Aug 1st, 2005 08:24 AM

Hey Diana ... good to *see* you! :-) The problem with an after-work on Friday would be for those driving from a distance to join us. Saturday evening might work better if we want to accommodate the most people. Thanks for the PF Changs idea ... that's a thought!

ncgrrl Aug 1st, 2005 10:57 AM

Hmm, since I wrote last October, I still like my privacy, but I do like Fodorites.

Love the mall, hate the parking lot. How in the world did they design a mall that's almost impossible to make a left turn out of? I haven't been to PF Changs but I can take the 'back route' there and avoid most of the mall traffic lights.

If I'm around in November I'll probably come.
