Last Day in the Park...for real this time
In the last post I said Saturday was our last day. It was the last day with our cousins but we had one more day, which was quiet but we did manage to visit the Salmon Cascades and the Ancient Groves trail. We watched salmon trying to traverse the rapids. Some make it, some don't. The Ancient Forest is a short loop trail through the woods. Both of these stops are in Sol Duc. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...75376dc50.jpeg This is not to be missed if you are in Sol Duc, it's a short walk from the park to a viewing stand and you can watch the salmon, swim upstream. At this point the salmon really are Olympic atheletes. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d170b0cf5.jpeg They hang around in this area, waiting to make an attempt at the falls. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...26c697cf1.jpeg If you look really close you can see salmon in this picture. I promise they are there! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...12c03bb95.jpeg And they are off, into the wild river ride. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ae0e93c92.jpeg Start of the Ancient Groves trail. It's fairly short and a nice walk. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d46930487.jpeg The whole floor is covered in moss.: https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...23daee121.jpeg Looking through the trees at the river. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...adf58086d.jpeg Are you sure this rock is going to stay there? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...34c087ae6.jpeg Boardwalk on the trail |
Thanks for posting this, the photos are fabulous. We had quite a few road trips in the US, coming from Australia, and travelled through a lot of this area. There's such a lot to see, it makes me wish I could return one day.

Deception Pass State Park
After a fantastic week with nature and family, we are off on our own. Packed up Nike and are heading toward Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. We drove into Port Townsend, where we will be spending a week later in our trip, and boarded the ferry to Coupeville. When I first booked our ferry ticket, and looking at the map, I thought we went all the way around Whidbey Island and landed in Coupeville, that's the name of the ferry. Actually you land at Ft. Casey on the south side of Coupeville. Short ferry ride that ends at a small landing, not even a terminal really then on to Coupeville, a really nice little town. You can take Hwy 20 around the town but I would recommend driving into the village and take Madrona Way which will meet up with 20. Next headed to Deception Pass State Park. Only one night here, which was unfortunate because it is a great park and deserves a lot more time. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ad653cb37.jpeg We had reserved the 2:45PM ferry, but got there early. They let us on the 1:15PM trip, but as you can see there were only two cars after us! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6b20ac460.jpeg Bye Port Townsend, see you in a week https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c685ae627.jpeg Ferry from Ft. Casey to Port Townsend https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bcbc56376.jpeg Tons of room and seating on the ferries and on each side there was a puzzle on one of the tables, so you could sit and work on a puzzle as you crossed the Puget Sound https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...71caa462c.jpeg Docked at Ft. Casey. As you get off the ferry you can go to the left and there is a nice camping area. If you go to the right there is a marina where this shot was taken. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c2374b3bb.jpeg Through Oak Harbor and into Deception Pass https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...57df08490.jpeg Cranberry Lake in the Park. One thing about Washington, there is so much water! Lakes, Sounds, Straits. I never know what I'm looking at as far as naming the bodies of water LOL. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...b7f4d47a6.jpeg Sail boat to the north. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7c5f1647d.jpeg At the end of Deception Pass SP is a great day use area. If you look real close can see a bridge in the middle of the picture that we will drive over tomorrow, hence the name Deception Pass. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cab157af0.jpeg Drift wood that has been deposited by a storm or more accurately storms over the years. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...612719cf6.jpeg Getting darker, waiting for that sunset. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8c78322ca.jpeg Oh yes, the last time we saw a sunset like this was on a beach in Troncones, Mexico. There is something about stopping, taking a big breath and watching the sunset on a wonderful day |

Gardyloo - Thanks for the tide info. We experienced an afternoon where the tide was coming in fairly strong, creating some nice beach side waves, then when we went back for sunset it was really calm.

La Connor, Washington
Some of you who have followed some of my TRs know that we spend three months in Mexico each year, meeting tons of Canadians and some Washingtonians. So our friends, Steve and Jayne, turned us on to La Connor. We met them for lunch overlooking the channel. It is a darling little town with some nice old buildings and little shops. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0d1d09913.jpeg This is the bridge we crossed coming into town from the West. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a40046b85.jpeg The main street is about 2 or 3 blocks long with historic buildings. I believe it was a fishing culture of maybe logging? Anyone know? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7bed82ece.jpeg We didn't buy or sell any Live Stock, but I know where to go to now if I need to https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...91eeb07c0.jpeg Walkway along the channel. Several restaurants, wine bars and gift shops along this path. John Wayne's first yacht , the Norwester, was in La Connor in 2016, but then I saw a story that it ran aground in the San Juans. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...15953538f.jpeg Outside the senior center. Quite active with classes and music. |
Birch Bay, Washington
Ever since Covid we have adopted a fairly nice way to travel Stateside, 6-7 days camping, then hit one of our timeshares. We have been camping for 13 days on the start of this trip. We did manage to get in a couple of showers but we are looking forward to staying in a nice apartment with a pool, laundry facilities and hot tub! We are staying at the Worldmark in Birch Bay. We have never stayed here before and it is right on Birch Bay. Nice condo, really nice people and we have a view. I love that there are restaurants and beach bars within walking distance. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e073f46f8.jpeg Welcome to Birch Bay, Alright, we are ready to have fun. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5fe7d47d5.jpeg Worldmark Birch Bay https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ab97c0b27.jpeg Here's our view. We are in a back building but we can see a little of the bay. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...08a8d6d5b.jpeg More shots of the Bay https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6d6ffc189.jpeg The Bubble Guy. The last two nights, there has been a guy down on the beach making these fantastic bubbles. There are really amazing, each set different. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a3890fa3b.jpeg The Bubble Guy deserves a second photo https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8d5abb84c.jpeg Lots of people on the bay, kayaking and paddle boarding. As it turned out, this couple was staying at our resort and I was able to forward this picture to them! |
Blaine, Washington
Blaine's claim to fame may be that it is the last US city before Canada. Not a lot of Canadians here this time. Has a small downtown with a great library and restaurants and big marina. You can see Vancouver just across the water. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d9aeb6d08.jpeg Visitor Center downtown Blaine. Flying our flag and our neighbor's. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...51e4e45fd.jpeg Some really well preserved older houses in the neighborhoods around downtown. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f36ffe99c.jpeg This house really took care of the garden along the walkway. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3a71c47d7.jpeg Orcas in the Park at the Marina! https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f36f03ef1.jpeg Also a few salmon too. There used to be a big salmon processing plant here. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ffadc5fed.jpeg Yup, that's Vancouver just across the water. It's funny because we, personally have this idea of Canada being forests, mountains and bears, yet this very tiny US town looks out over across to a big metropolis. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...493072721.jpeg The Peace Arch. Canadians and Americans can walk in this park without going through customs. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c6af389a1.jpeg Some beautiful flowers in the Peace Garden on the US side. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...09b62e1ca.jpeg Canada is right across the street from this sign. We were waving at people walking and driving by. We could have walked right into Canada, but there was a Border Patrol directly in back of us in a Jeep looking at the boundry to make sure people didn't cross. |
Birch Bay State Park
On the south end of town you will find Birch Bay State Park and it is a really beautiful park. Lot's of parking right on the coast, looking out across the bay. Picnic areas under shade trees and a large campground with sites right next to each other but separated by trees and foliage, so somewhat private. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cf040cd04.jpeg There are two entrances to the park. This one shuts down at dusk but there is another one for campers that is open late. https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6a8897983.jpeg We stopped for some cheese and crackers and looked out at our timeshare across the way. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...020d3d4fa.jpeg Love these big logs on the beach, they make great benches. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...58062d638.jpeg There is a short nature trail through forest and some wetlands |
Farewell Birch Bay
Of all the gin joints in all of the world how did I walk into this one! I have fallen hard for Birch Bay, I just love it. Why, maybe because it is small, right on the beach, feels really local somehow? Maybe my morning walks long the Bay? Why do feel so good here? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9fd6d1e0c.jpeg Could it be because the tide goes out so far in the morning that you can "walk on water"? https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...34555cfa4.jpeg Could it be because the boats don't care if there's water or not? https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6ea7b8919.jpeg Could it be because these houses once faced a golf course that has been let go to seed and now it's a nature walk? https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cc90a9744.jpeg Could it be because I turn around from looking at those houses and I see a guy looking for...whatever out on the beach? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3dae8499f.jpeg Could it be because I spent 3 nights listening to music at the Beach Bar? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7b441c9c7.jpeg Could it be because these rockers were just a tad younger than me? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2643487b1.jpeg Could it be because last night at the Beach Bar, I sat in one of these tables surrounded by about 200 hundred people with my new friends, Michele and Jill? https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cfae681ab.jpeg Could it be because of this guy's shirt? https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bcf0db464.jpeg Could it be because Shores Restaurant has Karoake and Pulltabs? Whatever those are? https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...366e8ab61.jpeg Finally, could it be because after 13 days of camping we had a shower every morning, a pool, LAUNDRY? I think it is all of these things. But I know I will be back to Birch Bay |
On to Port Townsend
We head out to I-5 to re-trace our steps to Port Townsend, down through Whidbey Island and across the ferry again. Our new friend, Michele, said you have to go down Chuckanut road and I-5 seemed pretty crowded so we got off at Fairhaven and head west to Hwy 11, which is the Chuckanut Pass and if you are ever up here, I would highly recommend that you take this option to staying on I-5. Unfortunately it's a pretty eyes forward not a chance for photos, but a worthwhile drive. Once we got to Whidbey it was my intention to stop at the bridge at Deception Pass and take some photos, no such luck, it's Labor day and it is PACKED! So we head to the ferry at Ft. Casey. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2c9219e3f.jpeg Coming up to the bridge at Deception Pass, normally you can walk out on it for some great photos...not today. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ae5f42a49.jpeg Going over the bridge. My nose apparently photo bombed this shot! https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8987774e3.jpeg Traffic! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...e6934f784.jpeg More traffic https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...216058326.jpeg Driving past Nas Whidbey Island. Hopefully these jets aren't taking off right now. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c4ff2de3b.jpeg Back at the Ferry Terminal, seems like we were just here. Oh yeah, we were. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cbff30eb6.jpeg Map of the top of the Olympic Peninsula. We will visited every part by the end of this trip. After a week in Port Townsend, we are headed to Cape Flattery which is at the furthest Northwest corner. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...087d680be.jpeg Gotta go, here comes our ride! |
Port Townsend
Everyone on our trip has said, you will love Port Townsend. We have a week here, staying at a timeshare on Discovery Bay, so I think we will have adequate time to discover the area. Today however, we are celebrating my wife's birthday so we arrive in Port Townsend, walk around a bit an grab some lunch / early dinner on the main drag. The town looks really interesting, lot's of old buildings with galleries and restaurants. More to come on Pt. Townsend! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bb3cb8dee.jpeg Last time we were almost the last car on the ferry. This time we were the first, and this is our view as the ferry takes off. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...db843bdd4.jpeg I can't resist a shot of a ferry with sail boats. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...555d9a857.jpeg There is some kind of regatta going on in PT https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...98dac1e29.jpeg Pulling into port. Discovery Bay and Blyn
After 2 1/2 beautiful weeks in Washington, we are due for some weather. Woke up this morning and Discovery Bay is completely socked in. You can't see across the bay. So we washed clothes, read, late breakfast and about 1:00PM headed out for a drive. I studied the Google maps and decided to take all of the roads with "Old" in the name. Old Gardiner Rd led to Gardner Beach then on to Old Blyn road and ended up back on Hwy 101. It finally burned off about 2:00PM. A quiet day on the Bay. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...f04698732.jpeg It was totally white out at 7AM, this is about 10AM https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...c0027a6a4.jpeg Stopped at a turnout on Gardiner Beach Rd. A little clearer https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...744aea444.jpeg This place is called Troll Haven Bandy Farms. All kinds of statues on the property. I think you can rent it for parties, but it is out in the middle of nowhere! https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...89bc72fe3.jpeg Old Blyn Road https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...395b74355.jpeg Here is a picture of a park ranger at Panorama Vista Park. You used to be able to get to the beach from here but due to erosion it is closed. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...28f66c059.jpeg Almost stepped on this little guy. Shouldn't he be yellow? https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...730b88209.jpeg Stopped to admire the totem poles at a sacred Native American spot. OK, it was 7 Cedars casino, but the totem poles are actually carved. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...90c239945.jpeg Back at the resort, same shot as this morning, but sunny now. |
Parks, Parks, Parks
Washington is blessed with so many great parks. We purchased an annual Discovery Pass for $30 which allows us access to the State Parks. Given that a one day pass is $10, it was a no brainer. Of course, that means I'm going to stop at every park so I can take full advantage of my investment, LOL. Today we started with Anderson Lake SP. Close to where we are staying and the park is surrounded by some great hikes. We were told we should visit North Beach County Park because we might be able to see eagles, no such luck but we did meet a real nice couple from Port Ludlow that owned a Dodge Promaster like ours. Final park today was Ft. Worden SP. Ft. Worden was constructed between 1898 and 1920. It has too much history to go into, but many buildings still remain and they have been turned into museums, an entertainment space, galleries and there is camping. I wish we could turn all the old unused military bases into this kind of location. https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7d56af694.jpeg Anderson Lake SP is between Hwy 20 and Hwy 19. Good luck finding it. My one complaint about Washington is the lake of signage for the Parks. We drove right by it. The Camp Host said, yeah, there is not a sign on the road, we now know that we turn left after the 40MPH sign! https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...add20d42e.jpeg Beautiful Lake, but you can't swim in it because of toxins from years of animal pollution from farms and higher temperatures. There have been cases of dogs dying after a swim in the lake. https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a83dcf264.jpeg Lot's of great hikes. This is HIke C, we took a Forest Bath walking through this trail. Forest Bath, it's a thing, look it up! https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8f427a9d4.jpeg Really interesting bark on this tree, maybe a spruce? Someone help me! https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1c31a341a.jpeg North Bay County Park just west of Ft. Worden...no eagles but a great beach... https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a636a504a.jpeg ...and North Bay has some trees, with apples growing right on them!! I thought apples came from Safeway. https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d90033041.jpeg Entrance to Ft. Worden, we didn't spend enough time here, have to come back. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d856989ff.jpeg Administrative building and now you can check in here for camping https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...19809b480.jpeg Port Wilson Light on the tip of Ft. Timeshares
A quick word about timeshares., As a former financial advisor I can tell you timeshares are the worst investment ever! "Oh, you will be able to sell it and get your money back, it's just like real estate." It's not, you'll never be able to sell it anywhere near what it cost you. So you can't think of them as an investment, it is a vacation opportunity and if you use them they can be really great. We've had ours 25 years and use it at least 4 to 5 times a year. Not an investment but a vacation vehicle. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...072a9387c.jpeg This looks like a great sunset, but it's actually sunrise about 7AM this morning. It's the first sunny morning we've had at Discovery Bay. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...56658b5e8.jpeg Here's our complex, right on the bay. Last week we were at Birch Bay, just across the street from the water. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...645c636e7.jpeg View from our living room https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...53e27ffd9.jpeg Here is the dock on the bay. |
Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge
One of the things about the Olympic Peninsula is the vast diversity of landscapes. We have seen so much beauty and we haven't explored the west side of the Peninsula which is next on our agenda. The other thing we've discovered is that it's tough to keep a timetable because we keep meeting friendly, interesting people everywhere up here! I had allocated about 1 - 2 hours to the Wildlife Refuge, but then we glombed on to two women from Seattle who took us in a search for bald eagles, no luck, but great conversations. So we missed out on downtown Sequim, which has a good museum and a nice downtown...Ah next time! https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b061bd2f.jpeg The Dungeness Refuge is about 35 minutes from our place in Discovery Bay. Once you exit Hwy 101, you drive through farmland and then you are at the very well marked turnoff, unlike Anderson Lake! https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...fe9665c37.jpeg The entry kiosk. There was a woman here who cast aspersions on our ability to spot bald eagles, not on the fact that we haven't seen any around! Why, they are everywhere! Nope, not yet. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...8ba59d2fa.jpeg There are two ways to go from the parking lot, one is along the bluff which is where we met our two Seattle friends. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...92672c477.jpeg After past the kiosk you will enter the trail to the Spit. There is a very nice paved trail as shown, there is also a Primitive Trail, marked by a little sign. I would recommend taking the Primitive Trail. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a59a9d963.jpeg And you have arrived at the big look out with information signs. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2ea20a76e.jpeg The Spit, it's an easy walk down to the Spit from the Observation Deck, with a 5.5 mile hike to the Lighthouse on the end of the Spit. We didn't do the hike because if the tide comes up you can't get back. No, not taking the hike had nothing to do with the 20 oz. Porterhouse I had last night at the 7 Cedars Casino! |
Beautiful Downtown Port Townsend
Today is our first day back into Port Townsend since we arrived Sunday on the ferry. I could have easily posted 100 pictures of the magnificent old buildings of PT, I have only posted a few. This Saturday is the first Saturday Art Walk so we will be back downtown for that. We spent a couple of hours walking around looking at the galleries and architecture. https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...320a96fdd.jpeg Had to show this picture, this is what we saw when we opened our blinds this morning! Be patient, it will burn off. https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4048cca91.jpeg Downtown is divided into the Historic Downtown and Uptown, Downtown. This is the Haller Fountain and she sits at the bottom of about 50 -100 steps that lead to Uptown. https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7e09be416.jpeg Great old building, most of them are filled now with restaurants and galleries and gift shops. https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...05ba3b380.jpeg I wonder how much of this particular building has been "reclaimed", it's very unique... https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2f8014016.jpeg ...but on the side of the previous building you can see that it's not all spit and shine and there is some work to be finished. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...29b66f68e.jpeg This picture doesn't do this justice. It's an art deco style bank https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9916756dc.jpeg This is Gunther who unfortunately washed up on the shore, somewhere in the region and he was allowed to decay and then his bones were re-assembled in the open gallery at the end of the wharf. https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...41a1a93e9.jpeg Topped off the afternoon with jazz at the Bishop Hotel. What a great town. |
