North by Northwest

OMG, not another Trip Report! Can't we stay home once in awhile! (directs quotes from my wife). Yes we are on the road agaiin. Third TR this year, Mexico in the winter, England in the Spring and now we are staying in our own country and visiting Olympic National Park in Washington State. We are taking our van, Nike, for about 6 weeks. First leg, today, is Los Angeles to Redding on I-5. We wanted to leave at 7:00 AM, but around 4AM, I hear, "U' up?" Yes we both are wide awake see we hit the road at 6:15. Google says it will be 7 hrs. 45 minutes. Google however doesn't eat or pee so we've figured out that for any trip over 4 hrs or so, you have to add 15 minutes per hour. Works every time. I must warn you the pictures you are about to see are shocking...shockingly boring, but this is how our trip starts.

Nike, is packed and ready for action.

A rare shot, very littletraffic on the road ahead of us. Lot's coming into LA
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d687c470e.jpeg
Coming down the Grapevine. Most people think the Grapevine is from Santa Clarita down to the San Joaquin Valley but it's actually about a 7 mile stretch, from Ft. Tejon to the bottom. It used to be covered in "grapevines"

Alright over the hills, let's go

This is big feed lot on 5. You can smell it for about two miles before you see it!

Farmers are having a tough time in what was once one of the largest "bread baskets" in the country. No water. We live in a state with a constant drought. These are dead trees.

When I was a 19 year old kid from Michigan I came to California to serve in the Air Navy. California, my dream. Only to be dropped into the largest agriculture area in the state at NAS Lemoore. No Beach Boys, no beach, no blondes, no bikinis! Only the local Portuguese farmers...with some pretty daughters.

I hope you have a great trip, Tdiddy12. I am already finding your "boring", familiar road and landscape quite interesting. It's so different to what I see here when I hit the road. Thanks for sharing this view through your windscreen. What kind of van is Nike?

Tdiddy12 Aug 14th, 2025 06:30 AM

Elydah - Nike is a 2021 Dodge Promaster. Kind of a Covid baby. We absolutely love traveling in it. We do lots of short trips and then one big trip each year. This trip takes us up I-5 to Salem and then we are crossing over to the Oregon Coast with around 3 weeks in Washington State. I was so inspired by yk's recent TR that I decided to add in some places she might not have visited. Her photos were so beautiful. If you haven't seen it you should check it out.

A few more pictures from yesterday's journey
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...018340df8.jpeg
As I said, the San Joaquin Valley is one of the largest agricultural areas in California. We must have passed at least 20 of these trucks taking Roma tomatoes to be processed. But...we have no water and agriculture doesn't represent the percentage of the economy it once did. We have plenty of Apples, but those are Apple computers and phones.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5ae65bfcf.jpeg
No water, here's a solution, someone has switched from nuts to agave based on this photo. First field I've seen like this Maybe moving from almonds to tequila?
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...08bda14a0.jpeg
We didn't spend much time in Redding, Ca. A quick stopover on the way North. Redding is where the land starts to get interesting. Lim's Cafe, been here since the 50's, closed now.
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9b90c9912.jpeg
We are staying on N. Market St which used to be the main road, north and south before I-5 was built. This pawn shop is right next store to Lim's. Stop for some Chinese food and pick up a gun!

Whoo hoo! What fun. I grew up in Los Angeles and (a few states later back in New England) adopted the PNW. Seattle is my heart and my home.

LOVE reading trip reports. And the photos are always amazing.

THANKYOU! suze, seattle

Redding, California to Salem, Oregon
And God said to California, " I will give you Big Sur, Yosemite, Sequoia and the Redwoods...but you have to take I-5" California said, "No thanks". Then God said, "If you take I-5, I will create it so that everything north of Redding is God's Country." California said, " Deal, and is that where you will be living God?" And God said, "No, I have a little place in Malibu".

Alright I can't authenticate that this was the actual conversation, however, 10 miles out of Redding I-5 does turn into God's Country. That straight, dusty, boring road turns into a carnival ride. It drops, curves and slides around gorgeous stands of trees. Walnut and Citrus trees are exchanged for towering Pines, and lakes on each side of the road. Eventually you will be greeted by Mt. Shasta and you will stay on this E ticket ride all they way to the Oregon border.

Welcome to Oregon
Oregon is one beautiful state and we are still on the part of I-5 that is God's Country. We are headed to Jefferson, Oregon where we will spend the night in someone's front yard. Let me explain. We belong to Boondockers Welcome which is an organization that matches up travelers, generally RVers and Van-ners and you can stay for free on their property. Kevin and Eileen were a very welcoming couple and we really enjoyed talking to them in the little town of Jefferson, outside of Salem.

Jefferson, Oregon to the Oregon Coast
After our Boondockers stay, we are headed to Manzanita on the Oregon Coast for a large family reunion. North to Salem and West on Hwy 22 dumping onto Hwy 101. Had a few stops, first we stopped at the Spirit Mountain Casino and then a quick stop at Tillamook for CHEESE! Moved from farmland to plains and then into the beautiful forest of Suisaw National Forest.

This is what we saw from the road, long fields with hills / mountains in the back.

Manzanita and the Environs
Pulled into Manzanita to pouring rain. Luckily we had Nike, our van, so we just hunkered down, brought out the books and turned on the music. The next day we drove up to Astoria and enjoyed the Coast.

Oregon to Washington
Today we left Oregon and drove over the big bridge at Astoria. Washington is so different than Oregon, the coast is not as dramatic but driving through the countryside away from the beach it is all about water. Rivers, sloughs, bays surrounded by fields with cows and the forest in the background. Stopped at Aberdeen then ended at Lake Quinault for one more night of camping before Sol Duc in the Olympic National Park.

Willaby Campground at Lake Quinault
We had a quick one night camping at Willaby Campground. Nice site, looking right out on the lake. Also we took the Lake Quinault Rain Forest Trail. Pro-Tip, it's a great 1/2 mile loop that will show you something similiar to the Hoh Rain Forest without any of the crowds.

Sol Duc Campground in the Olympic National Park
We have arrived at our final destination for this leg of the big Northwest Trip, Sol Duc Campground. We are in loop A with about 15 family members. A hardy bunch of folks who have been kicked out of some of the finest National Parks in the country. We have a lot of activities planned and the first day was a hike to Sol Duc falls. We are having wonderful weather. Sunny and beautiful.

Lake Crescent and Marymere Falls
Day 2 and we drove to Lake Crescent which is about an hour away from Sol Duc. The lake is a lot bigger than I thought and so beautiful, people are swimming, kayaking and enjoying the imagine, cold water! We hiked a la group to the Marymere Falls and then lunch at the Lake Crescent Lodge. They have WiFi, hence I have been able to work on my Trip Report. Another sunny day.

Thanks for report. I have been to several of your stops. Loved kayaking on Lake Crescent. I hope you will do Hurricane Ridge. I didn’t think I could do it but it was not bad.

suze Aug 20th, 2025 07:33 PM

I live here and am still impressed seeing your photos of the region. Thankyou.

elydah Aug 20th, 2025 11:33 PM

I love the first photo in post #13 Tdiddy12. A comfortable hammock, a good book, a glass of wine. I could stay there all day.

Tdiddy12 Aug 27th, 2025 07:32 AM

Sunburn1944 - I can imagine kayaking on Lake Crescent would be fun. We visited mid week and it was fairly quiet, then we returned on Saturday and the lake was packed with swimmers and kayaks, canoes, paddle boards. It hit me that even though I think of this as the National Park, for people who live in the area, it's a beach day, much like me going to Malibu. We have also had the most beautiful weather.

suze - I think you live in Seattle is that right? We met a couple from Seattle and they had a propane firepit. No campfires in Washington at this time and we were talking how campfires maybe a thing of the past given all the forest fires. Now I need a propane firepit, one more thing!

Elydah - Lake Crescent is one of the most beautiful lakes I have ever seen. IMO it's better than Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park, and does give Lake Tahoe a run for it's money...although it's hard to beat Lake Tahoe.

Tdiddy12 Aug 27th, 2025 08:04 AM

Hurricane Ridge Olympic National Park
I haven't posted for almost a week because we have no signal or Wi-Fi, but we have been busy. We did take one day off to stay in the campground, relaxing, cleaning the van and then off to the Sol Duc Hot Springs. The "geezer" pass is $12 and that's good for one and half hours in the pools. At first I thought it was a bit chintzy, but you really are done after and hour and a half. So, new day and on to Hurricane Ridge. Again yk posted some nice pictures and I will add a few more. I have a few suggestions on how to do Hurricane Ridge that may help people at some point.

First we drive into Port Angeles, past the National Park Visitor Center, it's a very nice Visitor Center, but you can visit it later. About 5 miles up you will come to the Entrance Kiosk. Show your pass or pay to enter the Park. Another 12 miles on a good but windy road to Hurricane Ridge. On the way up, maybe 4 or 5 miles, on your left is a great view of the Haro Strait, resist the urge to stop, hit it on the way back. Next stop is a big parking lot, which at 10:30AM had a lot of parking. It is a beautiful view, it's almost like a curtain being drawn back at a movie theater and you think, here is the show! It's not. Hurricane Ridge is still 1 and 1/2 miles ahead. So even though you will see parking, rarer than gold in the Olympics, keep heading right past it. There will be three more opportunities to park, one at the Ridge parking lot, probably full, and then at picnic sites A & B, both about a quarter mile from the actual start of the Hurricane Ridge trail. I'm saying all of this because if you are like me...and everyone else, you will want to stop at the first parking lot for the Visitor Center, bathrooms and wonderful view, but the trail is your ultimate destination, so head there first.

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...4c7e46067.jpeg
Entrance to the park, keep going, you can come back here.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...5f442675c.jpeg
Me at the top of the Ridge at the first parking lot, don't stop yet, keep going!
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...10d23bc07.jpeg
If you are like us, you may not get a parking space at the very top, come back to the picnic area and grab a spot then hike 1/4 mile to the start of the trail.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...baec8e607.jpeg
We didn't have the color that yk posted, I think because it's a month later than her trip

As you are hiking up the trail, you will see these groupings of trees and bushes on the hill side. They looked like little floating ponds to me!
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...be9c96edf.jpeg
The path to Hurricane Ridge is paved a large part of the way. Hats off to the Park staff who made this happen. We saw a number of wheel chairs on the path. It is steep though. We didn't make it to the top. However, if we ever meet I will lie and say we did!
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...1f8b4344d.jpeg
This is a shot from the first pick pull off as you are coming up the hill to the Ridge. Remember, pass it by, catch it on the way back. There is a small thin line across the water, that's Victoria, Canada

Another shot from that stop. You can see Mt. Baker in the middle. We had a beautiful clear day.

Tdiddy12 Aug 27th, 2025 08:11 AM

Port Angeles
After Hurrican Ridge, we did laundry in Port Angeles. Also hit the Walmart. Not things you need to add to a TR, but Port Angeles is closest for those type of opportunities. Had dinner at the Rail which was right across from the wharf. Port Angeles is really a nice place to stop, and visit cafes and the historic main street. Should have spent more time there.

Saturday in the Park
On our last day of camping we headed to Madison Falls. We really enjoyed camping at Sol Duc campground. I believe there are only a few campgrounds that you can make reservations and Sol Duc is one of them. That said, there is no Park oversite. There is a Camp Host, who we saw around but we never saw a Park employee the whole time we were there. The Camp Host said that was due to the fact that the campground is 12 miles off Hwy 101 and there have been lots of cuts to Park Staff. The Park Police / Rangers come through maybe once a week. While we stayed there the campsite was full but we did see a couple of instance where people showed up about 10PM, found a place to camp and were gone by 8AM! I'm guessing they didn't pay.

We drove to Madison Fall at the Elwha turn off from Hwy 101. It's a very nice falls and only a small walk from the picnic area and then we met family for dinner at the Lake Crescent Lodge. It was packed as I mentioned above. Tomorrow we move on to Whidbey Island. Olympic National Park is magnificent and we still have once more section to visit in the coming weeks.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2d06a58bd.jpeg
Most of the access to the Elwha Valley is closed. There is a gate blocking the road just past the Falls Parking lot.

I don't think I captured how interesting this tree stump is, but it's right at the start of the short trail to the falls.

Last Day in the Park...for real this time
In the last post I said Saturday was our last day. It was the last day with our cousins but we had one more day, which was quiet but we did manage to visit the Salmon Cascades and the Ancient Groves trail. We watched salmon trying to traverse the rapids. Some make it, some don't. The Ancient Forest is a short loop trail through the woods. Both of these stops are in Sol Duc.

https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...75376dc50.jpeg
This is not to be missed if you are in Sol Duc, it's a short walk from the park to a viewing stand and you can watch the salmon, swim upstream. At this point the salmon really are Olympic atheletes.
https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...d170b0cf5.jpeg
They hang around in this area, waiting to make an attempt at the falls.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...26c697cf1.jpeg
If you look really close you can see salmon in this picture. I promise they are there!
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...12c03bb95.jpeg
And they are off, into the wild river ride.
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ae0e93c92.jpeg
Start of the Ancient Groves trail. It's fairly short and a nice walk.

Thanks for posting this, the photos are fabulous. We had quite a few road trips in the US, coming from Australia, and travelled through a lot of this area. There's such a lot to see, it makes me wish I could return one day.

Hi Kay - I'm glad you got to see some of the Great Northwest. We in turn can't wait until our next trip to Australia. We've only been to Cairns and Syndey. So much more to experience there.

Deception Pass State Park
After a fantastic week with nature and family, we are off on our own. Packed up Nike and are heading toward Oak Harbor on Whidbey Island. We drove into Port Townsend, where we will be spending a week later in our trip, and boarded the ferry to Coupeville. When I first booked our ferry ticket, and looking at the map, I thought we went all the way around Whidbey Island and landed in Coupeville, that's the name of the ferry. Actually you land at Ft. Casey on the south side of Coupeville. Short ferry ride that ends at a small landing, not even a terminal really then on to Coupeville, a really nice little town. You can take Hwy 20 around the town but I would recommend driving into the village and take Madrona Way which will meet up with 20. Next headed to Deception Pass State Park. Only one night here, which was unfortunate because it is a great park and deserves a lot more time.

https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ad653cb37.jpeg
We had reserved the 2:45PM ferry, but got there early. They let us on the 1:15PM trip, but as you can see there were only two cars after us!

Bye Port Townsend, see you in a week

Docked at Ft. Casey. As you get off the ferry you can go to the left and there is a nice camping area. If you go to the right there is a marina where this shot was taken.

Oh yes, the last time we saw a sunset like this was on a beach in Troncones, Mexico. There is something about stopping, taking a big breath and watching the sunset on a wonderful day

Deception Pass is the only channel for a very large volume of seawater to escape (or return) after tide changes, basically all the water between Fidalgo and Whidbey Islands and the mainland. Especially when there are "negative" tides, i.e. low tides below the mean low water level, the tidal rip through Deception Pass can be nothing short of awesome. It's worth consulting a tide table like Cornet Bay, Deception Pass Tides - Tides Near Me to see if you'll be around. Note you don't want "slack" tides near the high and low tide times, you want flood or ebb tides during the middle of the cycle, when the current flow is strongest.

Tdiddy12 Aug 28th, 2025 12:26 PM

Gardyloo - Thanks for the tide info. We experienced an afternoon where the tide was coming in fairly strong, creating some nice beach side waves, then when we went back for sunset it was really calm.

La Connor, Washington
Some of you who have followed some of my TRs know that we spend three months in Mexico each year, meeting tons of Canadians and some Washingtonians. So our friends, Steve and Jayne, turned us on to La Connor. We met them for lunch overlooking the channel. It is a darling little town with some nice old buildings and little shops.

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...0d1d09913.jpeg
This is the bridge we crossed coming into town from the West.
https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a40046b85.jpeg
The main street is about 2 or 3 blocks long with historic buildings. I believe it was a fishing culture of maybe logging? Anyone know?
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7bed82ece.jpeg
We didn't buy or sell any Live Stock, but I know where to go to now if I need to
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...91eeb07c0.jpeg
Walkway along the channel. Several restaurants, wine bars and gift shops along this path. John Wayne's first yacht , the Norwester, was in La Connor in 2016, but then I saw a story that it ran aground in the San Juans.

Birch Bay, Washington
Ever since Covid we have adopted a fairly nice way to travel Stateside, 6-7 days camping, then hit one of our timeshares. We have been camping for 13 days on the start of this trip. We did manage to get in a couple of showers but we are looking forward to staying in a nice apartment with a pool, laundry facilities and hot tub! We are staying at the Worldmark in Birch Bay. We have never stayed here before and it is right on Birch Bay. Nice condo, really nice people and we have a view. I love that there are restaurants and beach bars within walking distance.

Blaine, Washington
Blaine's claim to fame may be that it is the last US city before Canada. Not a lot of Canadians here this time. Has a small downtown with a great library and restaurants and big marina. You can see Vancouver just across the water.

Also a few salmon too. There used to be a big salmon processing plant here.
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...ffadc5fed.jpeg
Yup, that's Vancouver just across the water. It's funny because we, personally have this idea of Canada being forests, mountains and bears, yet this very tiny US town looks out over across to a big metropolis.
https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...493072721.jpeg
The Peace Arch. Canadians and Americans can walk in this park without going through customs.

Canada is right across the street from this sign. We were waving at people walking and driving by. We could have walked right into Canada, but there was a Border Patrol directly in back of us in a Jeep looking at the boundry to make sure people didn't cross.

Birch Bay State Park
On the south end of town you will find Birch Bay State Park and it is a really beautiful park. Lot's of parking right on the coast, looking out across the bay. Picnic areas under shade trees and a large campground with sites right next to each other but separated by trees and foliage, so somewhat private.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cf040cd04.jpeg
There are two entrances to the park. This one shuts down at dusk but there is another one for campers that is open late.

We stopped for some cheese and crackers and looked out at our timeshare across the way.

Farewell Birch Bay
Of all the gin joints in all of the world how did I walk into this one! I have fallen hard for Birch Bay, I just love it. Why, maybe because it is small, right on the beach, feels really local somehow? Maybe my morning walks long the Bay? Why do feel so good here?

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...9fd6d1e0c.jpeg
Could it be because the tide goes out so far in the morning that you can "walk on water"?
https://cimg4.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...34555cfa4.jpeg
Could it be because the boats don't care if there's water or not?
https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...6ea7b8919.jpeg
Could it be because these houses once faced a golf course that has been let go to seed and now it's a nature walk?
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cc90a9744.jpeg
Could it be because I turn around from looking at those houses and I see a guy looking for...whatever out on the beach?
https://cimg9.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3dae8499f.jpeg
Could it be because I spent 3 nights listening to music at the Beach Bar?
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7b441c9c7.jpeg
Could it be because these rockers were just a tad younger than me?
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...2643487b1.jpeg
Could it be because last night at the Beach Bar, I sat in one of these tables surrounded by about 200 hundred people with my new friends, Michele and Jill?
https://cimg8.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...cfae681ab.jpeg
Could it be because of this guy's shirt?
https://cimg7.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...bcf0db464.jpeg
Could it be because Shores Restaurant has Karoake and Pulltabs? Whatever those are?
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...366e8ab61.jpeg
Finally, could it be because after 13 days of camping we had a shower every morning, a pool, LAUNDRY? I think it is all of these things. But I know I will be back to Birch Bay

Tdiddy12 Sep 1st, 2025 08:20 AM

On to Port Townsend
We head out to I-5 to re-trace our steps to Port Townsend, down through Whidbey Island and across the ferry again. Our new friend, Michele, said you have to go down Chuckanut road and I-5 seemed pretty crowded so we got off at Fairhaven and head west to Hwy 11, which is the Chuckanut Pass and if you are ever up here, I would highly recommend that you take this option to staying on I-5. Unfortunately it's a pretty eyes forward not a chance for photos, but a worthwhile drive. Once we got to Whidbey it was my intention to stop at the bridge at Deception Pass and take some photos, no such luck, it's Labor day and it is PACKED! So we head to the ferry at Ft. Casey.

Port Townsend
Everyone on our trip has said, you will love Port Townsend. We have a week here, staying at a timeshare on Discovery Bay, so I think we will have adequate time to discover the area. Today however, we are celebrating my wife's birthday so we arrive in Port Townsend, walk around a bit an grab some lunch / early dinner on the main drag. The town looks really interesting, lot's of old buildings with galleries and restaurants. More to come on Pt. Townsend!

Thank you so much yk. We have fallen in love with Washington, the people have been wonderful and there is so much diversity in the different places. I'm starting your Alaska TR right now! We have another month on our trip, heading to the west coast of Olympic Park. Will try to capture some of your great beach photos. Enjoy Alaska.

Discovery Bay and Blyn
After 2 1/2 beautiful weeks in Washington, we are due for some weather. Woke up this morning and Discovery Bay is completely socked in. You can't see across the bay. So we washed clothes, read, late breakfast and about 1:00PM headed out for a drive. I studied the Google maps and decided to take all of the roads with "Old" in the name. Old Gardiner Rd led to Gardner Beach then on to Old Blyn road and ended up back on Hwy 101. It finally burned off about 2:00PM. A quiet day on the Bay.

Parks, Parks, Parks
Washington is blessed with so many great parks. We purchased an annual Discovery Pass for $30 which allows us access to the State Parks. Given that a one day pass is $10, it was a no brainer. Of course, that means I'm going to stop at every park so I can take full advantage of my investment, LOL. Today we started with Anderson Lake SP. Close to where we are staying and the park is surrounded by some great hikes. We were told we should visit North Beach County Park because we might be able to see eagles, no such luck but we did meet a real nice couple from Port Ludlow that owned a Dodge Promaster like ours. Final park today was Ft. Worden SP. Ft. Worden was constructed between 1898 and 1920. It has too much history to go into, but many buildings still remain and they have been turned into museums, an entertainment space, galleries and there is camping. I wish we could turn all the old unused military bases into this kind of location.

https://cimg3.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...7d56af694.jpeg
Anderson Lake SP is between Hwy 20 and Hwy 19. Good luck finding it. My one complaint about Washington is the lake of signage for the Parks. We drove right by it. The Camp Host said, yeah, there is not a sign on the road, we now know that we turn left after the 40MPH sign!
https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...add20d42e.jpeg
Beautiful Lake, but you can't swim in it because of toxins from years of animal pollution from farms and higher temperatures. There have been cases of dogs dying after a swim in the lake.
https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...a83dcf264.jpeg
Lot's of great hikes. This is HIke C, we took a Forest Bath walking through this trail. Forest Bath, it's a thing, look it up!

Timeshares
A quick word about timeshares., As a former financial advisor I can tell you timeshares are the worst investment ever! "Oh, you will be able to sell it and get your money back, it's just like real estate." It's not, you'll never be able to sell it anywhere near what it cost you. So you can't think of them as an investment, it is a vacation opportunity and if you use them they can be really great. We've had ours 25 years and use it at least 4 to 5 times a year. Not an investment but a vacation vehicle.

Dungeness National Wildlife Refuge
One of the things about the Olympic Peninsula is the vast diversity of landscapes. We have seen so much beauty and we haven't explored the west side of the Peninsula which is next on our agenda. The other thing we've discovered is that it's tough to keep a timetable because we keep meeting friendly, interesting people everywhere up here! I had allocated about 1 - 2 hours to the Wildlife Refuge, but then we glombed on to two women from Seattle who took us in a search for bald eagles, no luck, but great conversations. So we missed out on downtown Sequim, which has a good museum and a nice downtown...Ah next time!

https://cimg6.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fod...3b061bd2f.jpeg
The Dungeness Refuge is about 35 minutes from our place in Discovery Bay. Once you exit Hwy 101, you drive through farmland and then you are at the very well marked turnoff, unlike Anderson Lake!

The entry kiosk. There was a woman here who cast aspersions on our ability to spot bald eagles, not on the fact that we haven't seen any around! Why, they are everywhere! Nope, not yet.

There are two ways to go from the parking lot, one is along the bluff which is where we met our two Seattle friends.

After past the kiosk you will enter the trail to the Spit. There is a very nice paved trail as shown, there is also a Primitive Trail, marked by a little sign. I would recommend taking the Primitive Trail.

And you have arrived at the big look out with information signs.

The Spit, it's an easy walk down to the Spit from the Observation Deck, with a 5.5 mile hike to the Lighthouse on the end of the Spit. We didn't do the hike because if the tide comes up you can't get back. No, not taking the hike had nothing to do with the 20 oz. Porterhouse I had last night at the 7 Cedars Casino!

Beautiful Downtown Port Townsend
Today is our first day back into Port Townsend since we arrived Sunday on the ferry. I could have easily posted 100 pictures of the magnificent old buildings of PT, I have only posted a few. This Saturday is the first Saturday Art Walk so we will be back downtown for that. We spent a couple of hours walking around looking at the galleries and architecture.

Had to show this picture, this is what we saw when we opened our blinds this morning! Be patient, it will burn off.

Downtown is divided into the Historic Downtown and Uptown, Downtown. This is the Haller Fountain and she sits at the bottom of about 50 -100 steps that lead to Uptown.

Great old building, most of them are filled now with restaurants and galleries and gift shops.

I wonder how much of this particular building has been "reclaimed", it's very unique...

...but on the side of the previous building you can see that it's not all spit and shine and there is some work to be finished.

This picture doesn't do this justice. It's an art deco style bank

This is Gunther who unfortunately washed up on the shore, somewhere in the region and he was allowed to decay and then his bones were re-assembled in the open gallery at the end of the wharf.

Topped off the afternoon with jazz at the Bishop Hotel. What a great town.
