Old Homestead is fun and the burgers are good and the highline is near by

I guess it's up to me to put in a word for Spark's .

Regarding Peter Luger when are you going? If it's within the next couple of months, it's probably too late to get a reservation unless you want to eat at 3 PM. At least that's what I found when I called and asked when we could eat during an entire month over a month away.
Next time I made the reservation about 4 months ahead of time. It was good, glad I went on our way to JFK with time to kill before flying to Europe. But add me to those who really like Smith and Wollensky -- and eating in the bar instead of one of the dining rooms. |
I see someone had let Buenas Aires out of the bag...I'm a big fan too! Although unlike many of the others, it's small and doesn't take reservations. It's more of a hole in the wall place in the E. Village with a little backyard for outdoor dining when weather permits. It's an Argentean steak house as opposed to the usual new york style steakhouse, so the menu has some south american influences, and the waiters are mostly from Argentina and Chile.

I can't go back to S&W. And it was a number of years ago - I order a steak - medium rare (isn't that the only way to eat steak?). Steak comes - it is medium to well. I call the waiter - I show it to him. He - and I still can't believe this - insists it is medium rare - and we are both looking at a well done cut into the meat. I have to ask him to call the maitre d' - and by this time I am not happy. The maitre d' - very grugingly - takes the steak back - and I do eventually get the medium rare. But - I can't go back there.

Another good one, a bit off the ebaten path is Christos Steakhouse in Astoria. It's well worth the subway ride.

MFNYC: I am a huge fan of Buenos Aires and love their sweetbreads. It's a great place.

Striphouse...mouth watering just thinking about their goose fat potatoes & black truffle creamed spinach. Oh yeah...the steak was soooo good.
|
Never try both of them
Never heard of Ruth before…but Peter Luger does have a reputation We tried to make a booking to Peter Luger last December, but they are sooo busy So we tried Keen's instead. Keen's not so bad either but I prefer Smith and Wollensky or Morten Next trip to NY, I will definetely go to Peter Luger |
Here are my favorites:
Striphouse, STK, Wolfgang's, Sparks, The Palm or Del Friscos. I did not care for Old Homestead, BLT Prime or Gallagers. My 2 cents |
Doug, s&w is also My dad's favorite, he tries different steaks but keep going back to s&w...

The custom is to put the Peter Luger sauce on the tomatoes, not on the steak.
The steak is already lapped with plenty of butter and does not need sauce! |
If you go to Peter Luger's, apparently the way to go is to order the porterhouse for two people or more. Get a tomato and onion salad and put the steak sauce on that, not the steak -- it's a sturdy sauce with noticeable amounts of horseradish. They apparently do a mean side order of bacon, as well as an excellent burger, good fries, and decent German potatoes. Rolls are good, too.
I went by myself and unfortunately was stuck getting the "steak for one," what was probably a strip steak which had nice flavor but a load of gristle. Never again. Their salad was nice enough, consisting of field greens, but the dressing might as well not have been there -- and that's where the the steak sauce was put to good use, as a salad dressing. Will order something different there if I return. |

Can I put my vote in for Keens? I've been several times over the past 8 years or so and it's always been good. Great list of single-malt Scotches, too. I've been to Peter Luger's and I think Keens is a bit nicer -- better ambience, friendly and helpful wait staff, outstanding building, and really tasty food... Sue and Adu, my friends, thanks for the suggestion for Old Homestead, I always listen to your recommendations; when my new hubs is craving steak and when he gets a job perhaps that's where I'll take him.

Never get a steak for 4 at PL. It's a different cut - get two for two if you are four:)
|
striphouse is fabulous. to quote nevadajane "goose fat potatoes & black truffle creamed spinach. Oh yeah...the steak was soooo good"...oh, yeah
s & w is a major NO! |
keen's. and several trusted friends top striphouse and wolfgang's as well, though i've never been.
|
medium to well is better than rare or medium rare...I would prefer the beef not to moo back at me when i cut into it and also mooo me in other ways as well. undercooked to raw meat is just begging for health issues for ya.
|
Now that is a new one on me--health issues from eating medium rare steak?
When was the last time you heard of someone getting sick from NYC steak? |
