mariaso, that's funny. I had started my post this morning and came back to finish it this afternoon. Meanwhile there's your message about La Bonne Soupe -- and sure enough we ate their Saturday.
|
Goodness Patrick. I think I gained 10 lbs after reading all the delicious food you and Lee ate.
Are you still in town for July 4th or will you be home by then? |
Reading your report is making me really excited for my NYC trip next month. I'm seeing Boeing Boeing and Gypsy (and In the Heights) so your reviews are making me very happy with my choices. I'm bummed Passing Strange won't fit into my trip, but it sounds fantastic. I was entertained by the performance on the Tonys, and think Stew would be amazing to see live. Thanks for writing so I can live vicariously:)

yk, flying home on July 1.

Patrick: I follow your "Travels with Lee" posts with interest...my work puts me intouch with lots of folks who have Alzheimer's themselves or who are caregivers to those that do.
I have suggested to the carers that they check out your posts as both inspiring and practical advice for this situation. Some have and have found the info useful (having patience with the slow eating, the mutual continued enjoyment of live theater/music, the awareness of the cost of getting lost and, most importantly, the fact that you two keep on going). You really should think about a book...this is useful info for a generation who are facing with increasing frequency this exact situation and could use a few postive role models. |
Patrick - you were at Dinosaur the same night as my son and 10 of his friends - they were celebrating a birthday and middle school graduation - did you notice a big table of very nerdy but sweet 13 year old boys arguing about politics? too funny . . . .
You might want to check out the place that replaced Jezebel on 9th Avenue - it's called Nizza and is run by the original chef at Marseille - supposed to be very reasonable and quite good. here's a link to the food blogger andrea strong and her review: http://www.thestrongbuzz.com/reviews...hp?item_id=276 |
We were at Dinosaur for lunch, not dinner.
Yes, saw Nizza and it looks interesting. The bigger part of the space of Jezebel isn't open yet but has a sign for "5 Napkin Burgers". LJ, thanks for your support. One thing I've learned early on is that there are no "rules" of what to expect. It seems every Alzheimer patient is different. I went to one support meeting and I disagreed with nearly everything they were saying -- most would not apply or work for Lee -- although as he's progressed maybe some of those things would be appropriate now. In fact, one standard is that they won't react well if you travel or subject them to new places. That couldn't be further from the truth with Lee, who still loves to travel and is well aware that we are in a new place. That doesn't bother him in the least. |
5 napkin burger is run by the same people - the burger refer to their burger up at Nice Matin - very good, very rich. Lots of buzz about that place too - and a reasonable alternative for pre-theatre dining . . .

Patrick, a big thank you for all the great food recommendations. I have one window open on Fodors and the other open on MenuPages. I'm bookmarking restaurants for our next trip to the City, which can't be soon enough. I was reading reviews on one place you recommended and realized that it had to be written by you. Either that or another couple had the same exact food as you and Lee did that night!!
Thanks again. |
Patrick, lots to talk to my DD about! she just saw "Port Authority" this weekend and we will be seeing "Passing Strange" the night we see you. When you hold our seats, please also be sure the kitchen's got the coffee pots going. :) I'm not too good about staying up late.....
Owlwoman, would be fun to get together. I just tonight saw your name on a Costa Rica thread (my latest travel idea....considered Argentina again, but the airfare $$$$$$). Don't want to hijack Patrick's thread, though.... |
Patrick, I'm so enjoying you restaurants and theater notes! You probably know this, but there is a little covered "patio" in the back of Renaissance coffee shop. If you haven't tried it yet it's a nice little quiet spot to enjoy your meal.
|
Margo, no I didn't know that.
Topping as I've added Week II to this thread. |
Just wanted to say hello Patrick to you and to Lee. I have so enjoyed your thread. And the food you have eaten, I am envious, sigh. Take care and continue to have a wonderful time in NYC!
|
I am loving this !
And getting 'homesick" again :) The mention of Red Cat did it this time lol.... besos, Patrick ! |
Nice report Patrick.
Your mention of Laurie Beechman Theatre, made me think of that dear girl. The first time I met her was in Time Square with my husband. My father in law had recently passed, and he and Laurie had some wonderful times filled with mutual admiration. Her memory has continually reintroduced itself in all areas of life over the years. I never knew her, but my husband and father in law and many colleagues think of her with wild fond memories. I am surprised the website of her namesake theatre, never really mentions the history of she. |
Patrick: Just another thank you for this great thread. I spent today in New York City, and was thinking how great it would be to spend a month. (we live about 90 miles north) so we will follow your eating (and other) adventures with great anticipation. You are to be congratulated for your extremely courageous positive attitude toward life. Bravo to you, and to Lee.

Good 2nd week Patrick. I, too, love
Aleo and just discovered Havana Central alone (didn't know you had been) this year (the 1000 points prompted me!); took a friend back who couldn't believe how inexpensive it is. Lola I think is over-rated. Assume you are not going to Metropolitan Room tonite as I haven't heard?? |
OOps. No, Rhea. Sorry. We made dinner plans and then will be going to After Party again.

Okay, so last night Patrick and Lee dined at Bond 45. Patrick had the striped bass in a clay pot (special) and Lee had the sliced steak with gorgonzola. I think they liked it because there was not a bite left on either plate. Patrick also had 2 rob roy's, that were perfect on the 2nd try by the bartender. There fabulous dining companions, Moi & the Bughusband had caesar salad, buffalo mozz (2 apps)and split the spaghetti ragu. Delish. Then, 3 of us split the canoli dessert (Patrick was the perfect picture of resistance), and we headed off to the American Airlines theater on 42nd St. to see Dangerous Liasons. 3 hour show, and I enjoyed it, althouth I must admit to nodding a bit after the 2.5 hour mark. Laura Linney was great, however, Maime Gummer (Meryl Streep's daughter) gets on my last nerve. Can't stand the stupid baby voice. She seems to play every role that way (have seen her off-broadway).
We had a great night though, and Patrick and the bughusband could probably dish about theater for hours, so there was never a loss for conversation. They both look great, and no, Patrick has not gained an ounce! And, now, Patrick can give his own review. |
Our friend introduced us to Bond 45 when we were in NY last month and I liked it very much. We were meeting for a rather early dinner and I wasn't hungry enough for a real meal, so I just had two starters, stracciatlla (different than I'm used to seeing it and very good) and the Jewish Ghetto-style artichokes, which I'd never had before and just loved. (In fact, I had exactly the same meal for lunch the next day at Fiorello's.) And vodka, of course. The Pause That Refreshes.
I'm looking forward to trying Bond 45 again and having a whole meal next time. I assume you New Yorkers know this, but our friend said it was named that because it used to be a men's clothing store called Bond Menswear. I guess 45 is the street number. |
