Okay - thanks everyone. I posted the question to find out if this was feasible but it apparently isn't the best option.

There are 5 of us going, so the cost savings would be fairly significant - but it sounds like we would be entirely too rushed to enjoy the museum.

I think you made a wise decision.
As I previously wrote, your initial plan is doable, but rushed.
And, you are wise to save a visit to MOMA when you can spend more time there. It's definitely worth more than than you could have devoted to it that day!
