MoMA to Yankees Game - tips please!
I would love to go to the MoMA on one of their Target Friday afternoons, which I understand begin at 4:00 (on June 23rd, specifically). However, I have already purchased Yankee tickets for a game that starts at 7:05.
Do I have time to pop into the MoMA and see a few works (I'd like to be there about an hour - to see Starry Night + a few others - unfortunately I don't appreciate modern art as I should) and get to the game on time? Any tips would be appreciated...I would just love for this to work out as I would be able to get into the Museum for free but don't know what to expect in terms of queues, bag check, and then travel to the game... Thanks so much! |
No. Lines will be very long trying to get into the MoMA.
Especilly not on a Friday afternoon in Midtown trying to get to a 7PM game at Yankee Stadium. |
Maybe you can get to the Yankee game a bit late? I'm never crushed if I miss the 1st or 2nd inning.
|
Not only will you probably encounter a line to get in, but you'll probably have an additional wait at the checkroom.
The only way you can pull this off is to get in line well before 4 p.m., so that you can get into the museum shortly after 4. You could then probably be able to spend about an hour or so there and then take a subway up to the game. |
IMPORTANT: No backpacks are allowed into Yankee stadium. I bring whatever I need in a clear plastic grocery bag. Do not bring them, as they won't let you in with it. I see a lot of people turned away to go back to their cars otherwise wondering what to do with their bags they brought.
Don't know the rule about purses - maybe others's do (Howard?) |
I went to Yankee stadium two weeks ago and they were allowing backpacks and purses, they just had to search through them. I brought in some snacks for us in an insulated bag.
They've eased up on the security recently. |
Security is uneven. They can search everything - and we saw some people with big bags turned away recently (regular purses are OK - but no backpacks, large bags, coolers etc.
Also - games almost always sell out - and security has increased a lot since 9/11 - so to see the start of the game - you really need to get to the Stadium by 6pm. |
I've never had to wait an hour to get into Yankee Stadium for a game. If you're there by 6:30, you should be okay.
As others have stated, the policy on backpacks is not a rigid one! So, to be safe, don't bring one. |
And you can get the train at 51st and 6th AVe or walk up to 59th and Columbus Circle. The train is the D train and it is an express. It stops at Yankee Stadium.
|
Forget the Yankee's game completely and spend a pleasant evening at MoMA (suggestion from Red Sox fan)
|
Only a Red Sox fan would suggest something that dumb.
|
Also, I don't know about the lines people are talking about, we arrived at 1:10 for a 1:00 pm game and walked right in, we waited in line for maybe one minute while they searched the backpacks people had brought. I saw NO ONE turned away.
|
The line may be at the ATM to take out more cash to buy 1 hot dog and 1 beer. Ouch.
|
I was talking about the lines to get in for free Friday.
You'd be better off paying admission, seeing what you want to see at MoMA, then trying to make the game. |
Thanks all! Your input is so appreciated!
Sounds like our best option is to only take a small purse (so as not to have to check in at the MoMA) and avoid the tight security at the stadium. We'll also get in line early (Thanks, HowardR). How early would you suggest? What is the estimated travel time - walking to subway, taking the express train to the stadium, and getting to the stadium? |
Sorry, Lauren, but I can't be of any help as far as what time to get to MOMA to wait in line, as I've never gone on Friday afternoon. (Happily, we're members, so we don't have to wait for Fridays!) I would think you'd be okay for a 3:15-3:30 arrival time, but perhaps someone else can give first-hand experience.

The #4 also goes there. You can pick up that at 59rd & Lexington. You can also take the #6 at 53rd and Lex and change for the #4 at 59th (although the trains are on different levels at 59th), 86th st, or 125th St (these last 2 are easier changes).
If you get a membership to MoMA, or if you have some kind of corporate deal, you don't have to wait in line. |
Another option is a Mets game (if there is one that evening). They search bags but do allow them. My son has gone twice this season with a small backpack (with food inside) and never had a problem.
|
Here's an idea. How about just getting to MoMA before the crowds and paying the $12-20 admission fee? It's less (or nearly so) than a beer & hotdog at the Stadium, and you won't be rushed.
(And I too have never had to wait more than a few minutes to enter Yankee Stadium. I have had booze confiscated, however, in my slightly younger days.) |
Howard, getting in line at 3:15 they will still have a long wait.
Lauren, I don't think you realize how rushed this will be. I highly suggest you go around noon, pay the admission, leave around 4PM, get something to eat, and head to Yankee Stadium. |
