Met another Fodorite?

Has anyone physically met another Fodorite that they got to know on this chat site? I don't mean for romantic intentions, but develop sort of a buddy friendship, and then meet in person for any reason?

jersey Dec 16th, 2004 02:54 AM

There have been two get togethers in the last couple of months. One in NJ and one in California. I went to the one in NJ, had a blast, and will do it again with the group in May. According to the reports from the Cali GTG, they also had an almost illegal amount of fun.

Patrick Dec 16th, 2004 05:52 AM

We had a Fodorite gathering in Naples, Florida last year which was fun. LilMsFoodie, whom I met there, and I recently got together for lunch and travel talk.

I was once contacted by "Elvira" a regular poster on the Europe board who was coming to Florida to visit her mother and we met for lunch in Ft. Lauderdale.

And I've accidentally run into several fellow posters in Europe. During converstions they would finally say, "oh, you're THAT Patrick". That has happened at least four times!

I would love to meet up with some of the regular New York City posters as I feel I've gotten to know them from here.

MelissaHI Dec 16th, 2004 06:17 AM

There have been many, many Fodors GTGS, and I have only been able to make a few. I got to meet the famous Elvira and Elberko in Paris once. Last year I met Mischka in London.....Here in Hawaii I have met kalena, lcuy, and Monica Pileggi and we discovered what a small world it is, since we all seem to know each other's family members! In fact, I've even been working with kalena for the past couple of months, which was nice when I was new to have a familiar face around.

....and then, of course, I've met the infamous Kal & Mrs. Kal. In New Orleans no less!

Kal Dec 16th, 2004 07:07 AM

Melissa-We MET in New Orleans? When? ;)

I was never much of a drinker until I met Mels in NOLA. :^o
We also met the lovely "bonmarr" and her handsome hubby that trip.

As for the rest of the FFFs we've met, we love them all but the jury's still out on Margot55. :-?
How cruel can one person be calling us from Hanalei Beach one day and then The Sand Bar the next?!?!? :'(

We will probably need to meet her a few more times, preferably in Kauai but we'll settle for NY/NJ in May with the rest of "the usual suspects".

Patrick-Set your watch for May!

Statia Dec 16th, 2004 07:25 AM

I've only met a poster from the Caribbean board after helping him to plan a day trip to my island. Once he arrived, my husband happened to run into him before me and immediately knew who he was. After all there aren't many rental cars where we live. ;)

I do, however, keep in touch with a few Fodorites by email and hope to meet many more in my travels at some point.

adamhornets Dec 16th, 2004 07:29 AM

Only discovered this site in the last month and I'm delighted to have had help in planning our Utah trip in April.
We would love to meet other Fodorites whilst we are in Utah so please leave a message at my e-mail address.

Also if any of you are coming to London, please contact me if I can be of any help.

Jersey's right, we did have a fantastic time at the NJ/NY GTG back in October...looking forward to May 21st for our next event.

In case you didn't check out our photos yet, you can still see them at www.pbase.com/tpatricco

Everyone is welcome for the May GTG!

E-mail me at [email protected] and I'll add you to the "keep posted" list for further details.

bellairegirl Dec 16th, 2004 08:07 AM

I met Bailey when she was in Houston attending the Super Bowl last year (with her husband who is a sports journalist). I had answered her posts about restaurants in town, and we decided to meet up. I even gave her a short driving tour of the city. It was great fun to get together with someone else who enjoys talking about travel.

My wife and I had dinner in Rome with Betsy and her husband. It was a very pleasant experience to have a chance to chat during dinner with someone else.

MelissaHI Dec 16th, 2004 08:22 AM

ha ha! I know, Kal, NOLA was quite a forgettable experience! I think I was there for my birthday spanking.

beachysis Dec 16th, 2004 09:26 AM

My sister and I met Wildfire in Rome for dinner after discovering on this site that we were going to be there at the same time in October, and staying in the same area of town. He offered to buy us a drink, and followed through on the promise. My sis and I had each other to talk to the whole trip, but since he was traveling alone, we were happy to add one more to our dinner table :). Many suggestions for the sites were offered on both sides....
Our next trip together (the sisters, that is) is to NOLA in February (AFTER Mardi Gras, thank you!) if anyone will be there then :)!

FainaAgain Dec 16th, 2004 11:50 AM

I survived 2 San Francisco GTG's. The 2nd one even with Kal! Search this forum for Yountville, read the thread, look at hour happy pictures - this is the 2nd GTG. The first one... probaly you can search for SF get together, and the pics URL still there... Marylin, can you help? You are the one :)

joan Dec 16th, 2004 12:03 PM

tpatricco, great photos! At first I thought "how cruel!" at the pic with the pink masks, but then they were unveiled on the next page. Budman with a glass of wine???? Yikes what is this world coming to???

I've met Maggi, Tandoori Girl, cd, Olive Oyl, and Leone/blacktie/hold-a-grudge/whatever. We need to have a Tampa Bay GTG!

Patrick Dec 16th, 2004 12:10 PM

Hey, Joan, I'm willing to make the drive up to Tampa from Naples.

Marilyn Dec 16th, 2004 12:57 PM

Joan, LOL, and you know why. :S-

Faina, the link to the 1st GTG in SF is
http://www.worldisround.com/articles/23795/index.html

and the 2nd GTG in Yountville is here:
http://www.worldisround.com/articles/96984/

offlady, I've met lots of fodorites at the GTG's. But I have also met a few elsewhere -- MissJanna and Scarlett in NYC, Anne Sherrod in St. Louis, and cigalechanta in Boston. I look forward with great pleasure to meeting more!

Marilyn Dec 16th, 2004 01:01 PM

PS I'll go to any GTG anywhere in the world if you can guarantee Muffin will be there. I'm one of her biggest fans!

joan Dec 16th, 2004 01:06 PM

All right Patrick! Anyone else for Tampa Bay GTG? Marilyn? Would Patrick and joan together make up for Muffin? I might be able to throw in Tandoori Girl and OO, I bet Hibiscushouse and Beachdreams would go. Then would you come?:S-
Hey maybe Muffin is leone/blacktie? Wow whaddya think? We'll only know for sure if they both attend!

Marilyn Dec 16th, 2004 05:27 PM

I think they broke the mold when they made Muffin. Those other people you mention (LOL) are nowhere as clever or helpful as our little Muffinburger.

I'd love to meet all of you, but I don't know about Tampa. What's the current exchange rate? How are the dentists? Where's the closest international airport? Are there gypsies? What are the current fashion trends and will they look good on me?

Scarlett Dec 16th, 2004 05:53 PM

Yes, I have. 4 I think :)
I was so happy to meet Marilyn and look forward to more meetings in the months to come..Patrick look out! we might be in Naples too :D

Marilyn, joan,
IMHO-muffin is more clever and witty without even trying :D

kybourbon Dec 16th, 2004 06:52 PM

I sent my daughter to the Boston GTG last January since she goes to school in Cambridge. I went to the KY/Indiana GTG in Louisville in March with Rex, Indytravel, Marcy_, carolyn, starspinners. I had lunch with cigalechanta in Cambridge in May. I will attend the NY/NJ gtg this May. The Yountville GTG is very tempting - seems like a fun group.

Marilyn Dec 16th, 2004 08:12 PM

ky, we are counting on you for next year! All you guys -- this could be the first "national" GTG. It's easy because it's pegged to an event, Friday after Thanksgiving. Great location! Great people!

GTGfromhelloh Dec 20th, 2004 10:51 AM

GTG with Marilyn, Joan et al? Oh what fun! Oh, gosh, gee, I'm all booked up. How disappointing! I just seem to miss the events with all the interesting, human people. Oh, maybe you'll do a west coast version soon. Anyway, have a happy holiday and great 2005.

margot55 Dec 21st, 2004 09:37 AM

Hey Kal -

In my relentless pursuit of taunting you last year from Kauai, you forgot to include my phone call from the Bull Shed!!!((6)) Ah, well, you can get your revenge in 8 mo' days, no?! To all you other Fodorites, you should also know that Kal had arranged it with the barkeep at the Sand Bar to give me and my hubby each a drink on him to honor my b-day - that's the kinda guy he is - big guy with an even bigger heart! Mahalo again, Kal...((r))((L))

offlady Dec 21st, 2004 12:27 PM

How can you tell if a person is a fellow fodorite? I think someone should create a fodor button to wear while traveling. Any artists in the house?

tpatricco Dec 21st, 2004 12:35 PM

Nice idea offlady, unfortunately I think some fellow Fodorites wouldn't want to be recognized in public. The ones that are willing to reveal themselves go to the GTG's!

There is a much coveted Fodors Pin. If you find out how to get one, let me know.

FainaAgain Dec 21st, 2004 12:40 PM

Offlady, we usually distribute crowns. Or hats with tiny bells.

After a couple of glasses everybody is a Fodorite! Don't believe me? Ask Kal or Budman!

Scarlett Dec 21st, 2004 04:47 PM

joan, did you see him ? LOL GTGhelloh ~snort~ :D

I will be meeting at least one Fodorite after the New Year, here in Fl ... can't wait :D

JenniferPM Dec 21st, 2004 07:15 PM

I have been reading this board for years and I remember Elvira well and really miss her. Does anyone keep in touch with her? I was so sad when she left. Her leaving was truly a loss.

joan Dec 22nd, 2004 04:17 AM

Scarlett, I am snorting too. Guess he doesn't want to meet me again after all? I can't understand it!>:-)

OO Dec 22nd, 2004 04:32 AM

Ooooh we are so HURT!! :p He can have his very own GTG though, and invite all his personalities--leone, blacktie, travelsmiles, smilestravel, smilesalways, travelson, PCHsmiles, Gina, EudoraS, Nor, Norissley, SoBetraveller, GTGfromhelloh, Helen, timeisonmyside. Gosh, he's got a crowd already and that's not even half of them! :-D

OneWanderingJew Dec 22nd, 2004 04:40 AM

I've met 2 Fodorites when they traveled to Atlanta and really enjoyed myself. I've kept in touch with a couple great people by email but haven't had the opportunity to meet them in person yet.

I may have to come out to the Calif. GTG because you guys sound like so much fun!

Meesthare Dec 22nd, 2004 05:40 AM

I've met a couple of people via e-mail too - it would be great to meet in actual real person, although I don't feel as if I'm among strangers here. How about a GTG up here in Canada?

Scarlett Dec 22nd, 2004 05:58 AM

Meesthare! I would love that! Daniel Williams and BAK and mitch..maybe next summer? Montreal? :D

joan, very funny :D
OO - you are Brilliant!!
I think he should meet praline and the two of them can drive each other over the edge for sure LOL

Meesthare Dec 22nd, 2004 06:05 AM

Hey, Scarlett, how about Toronto instead? Or - wait until the fall and come see us in Victoria, BC. :)

Scarlett Dec 22nd, 2004 06:21 AM

meesthare~Victoria sounds good too :)
I love Canada so wherever you send me I will be happy :D

Scarlett Dec 22nd, 2004 06:21 AM

jersey honey, I forgot to add my wishes for a Happy Holiday to you and your sweet kitty who will be OK for a looong time ((F))

Bestonthebeach Dec 22nd, 2004 07:26 AM

... oh, my goodness, the three together, lol, and as usual, obsessed.

... gadzooks, keepers of the names ... how flattering, lol, not. But what wasted energy and time!

... afterall, it is the season, and thus to each of you a great holiday of peace and warmth, and properous New Year, 2005. May you spread some joy.

... in 2005, release yourselves from misguided pursuits, and do get on with ... whatever you get on with.

... try to smile, and think joyous thoughts. Ta-Ta.

Scarlett Dec 22nd, 2004 07:33 AM

Steve/Joe/whatever, you might try taking some of your own advice.

Bestonthebeach Dec 22nd, 2004 07:37 AM

... how strange, almost spooky. Must be an east coast phenom ... the west seems refreshingly clear.
