Different suds for different buds....see, I think Shiner is just average. Their Heiferweisen (sp?) is not bad with a little lemon shot into it but otherwise pass.
Roy, been there, done that....hope to do it again someday! Positively gorgeous where you are. |
AnnMarie_C -
(Saying hello, for starters! Long time no see!) Any scoop on who has great mojitos in SA? My first one was in SA at Boudro's but I prefer their prickly pear rita. |
Hi Moldy!
Gosh, I'll have to ask our friends who live downtown...they are the anti-AnnMarie, very hip and in-the-know. ;-) Also, they are a fan of the mojito. OO and Seamus are great resources...hopefully, they'll see this. Will get back with you. Hope all is well where you are! |
Hi AnnMarie and Moldy! Long time no see is right!! Mojitos...sob...you are making me miss my Florida home! I had my first one in South Beach, then DH brought the tradition to his Tampa hotel. I haven't had one since we left there though...it's just one of those things that doesn't cross the border easily, in my mind anyway. They are so great on a hot muggy night. We are in margarita land now, and they are better here than they were in FL. :) Maybe we should have a margarita tasting GTG??

Hi OO!
Are there some good bars downtown Moldy should check out in search of the Mojito? Swig, I believe, is mostly a martini / cigar bar? That's the extent of my knowledge. Moldy, when do you plan to go back? I'll be sure to email said friends and let you know what they come up with. We'll have to travel to California for that margarita GTG :-D |
Drop me an email at my screen name @gmail.com if you have a few minutes. I'll give you the scoop of my upcoming road trip.
OO - I do know that the mojitos at Boudro's are quite good. I debate which I prefer but pretty well stick with the prickly pear ritas since I don't know anyone else who makes them! After the week I've had this week, I'd love a rita tasting! I'm afraid that I'd find them all delicious - even if I were drinking river water! Nothing like TAKS testing & swine flu paranoia among the masses in a high school! |
You've got mold...I mean mail! :-)

AnnMarie, it sounds as if you and I have about the same amount of bar experience. Party animals, si? The only bar I've been to downtown is Zinc (a wine bar primarily), which is pretty nice and upscale as far as bars in San Antonio go. They've got a nice New Orleans style patio as well. Because they are owned by Boudros, I suspect that their mojitos would be similar to theirs, but still, it's nice for the atmosphere. http://zincwine.com/zinc/ We've had a couple of events there...one in a separate room and one in their wine cellar...a dinner, and what a cool place for a dinner. Literally. :) The bar area is wood floored and brick walled. Other than that, I dunno.
Hmm....Maybe try Pesca? They have a very hip bar area and might be a good place for a Mojito. Pesca is on the Riverwalk level of the Watermark Hotel. There is a drawback to your spouse working in the tourism hub of the city...he rarely wants to return to it after he gets home from work. Same thing when we lived in New Orleans. Visitors probably know more about the French Quarter than I did! :) |
The only reason why anyone would diss San Antonio margaritas is because they sampled the ritas at a cheesy tourist trap instead of a local's hangout. For sheer yumminess, I'll second the Boudros/Zinc recommendation for their prickly pear rita, but there are tons of different and excellent margaritas in this town. I may have to check out those famous California margaritas next time I'm out there, though.
For mojitos, I really enjoy the ones at Azuca (in Southtown), probably because they're super cheap during happy hour. :) Swig has okay mojitos, too, and they're always "on special". Which means that, unlike the rest of their drinks menu, the price won't give you a heart attack. They still ain't cheap, but I like that place because it is literally within stumbling distance of home. Always helpful! |
mi tiara's is a great place, can't handle margaritas myself, stick to beer, but if they can't make them, no one can!!
