Margaritas in San Antonio
We're going to be in San Antonio for a few days and look for really great margaritas. Suggestions?
Thanks! |
We go to Boudro's. They make tableside guacamole that's really good too. They fill up, so I'd make a reservation.
|
La Fogata...
http://www.lafogata.com/history.html And might I suggest if you have more than one to pin a piece of paper onto your shirt with your name and hotel address so as not to get lost. :-D |
Well, I've never had a bad margarita in SA that I can recall (!)
[We've also had good ones at Boudro's and at Mi Tierra] |
I forgot to post their website. It's www.boudros.com. Last time I checked they had their guacamole recipe listed online. :)
|
Los Barrios in SA has the best margaritas. They were featured on the Food Network for their puffy tacos too
|
We live here and when we want a good margarita, we go to Rosario's. La Fogata has excellent margaritas too. don't know where you're staying but Chuy's has good margaritas and I love their Texas martini (a smooth margarita).
|
We like Chuy's and La Fogata too. I haven't had the chance to try Rosario's yet, but it's on my list. We had to wait so long at La Fogata, but we had margaritas to console us!
|
I can't remember the name of it, but there's one right across the way from the Mexican marketplace downtown.
|
3 ounces regular silver Tequila
1 ounce Cointreau 1 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice ice Makes the world's best margarita. Everything else is disappointing. |
|
Without a doubt - Boudro's Prickly Pear Margarita
It is roadtrip worthy! |
Boudro's--absolutely!! The margaritas are delicious and the guacamole...divine.
I love Rosario's but the last time we were there it was too noisy to hear ourselves talk. Great food and fun atmosphere though. Hopefully you'll be in SA for two nights and can do both. |
Love margaritas. However San Antonio's restaurants don't know how do make a good one or should I say they like to make them on the weak side. The last two times I was in San Antonio I give up & decided a beer was my best bet.
Hell, San Diego has this place beat as far as margaritas are concerned , even Anchorage, Alaska too. However I am only knocking San Antonio on the margaritas, otherwise It is a great place to visit. |
roy2moira,
that's exactly what I wanted to say in a more subtle way. And it is true for all Texas. When in Texas, drink Shiner Beer. It's really good stuff (says a German!). Apart from Margaritas, Texas is a great state. |
|
roy, that is just blasphemy - Alaska having better margaritas than Texas?!
|
traveller1959 you're correct. My wife and I traveled through Dallas/FtWorth, Austin, San Antonio, etc. for a 2 week trip 3 years ago. Loved it and the people so much we did west Texas for 2 weeks 2 years ago.
I tried a Shiner Bock at our 1st stop at the Stockyards, Ft Worth and that's been my beer ever since. It is distributed in Alaska so when I am not making or ordering a margarita, I am having a Shiner Bock. Sorry to get a little off the subject of margaritas in San Antonio but neither Texas or Arizona have good margaritas, only California. I don't understand it considering their location. Then here we are in Anchorage, far north, with lots of Mexican restaurants and wonderful margaritas too. volcanogirl and all you guys & gals must travel to Alaska someday. Recommend travel during June through August - the remainer of the year is winter. That's why tequila is good for us - it keeps us thawed out. |
Wow, nothing like a little mass generalization!!
|
Uh oh! Think I'll duck on this one.
|
Different suds for different buds....see, I think Shiner is just average. Their Heiferweisen (sp?) is not bad with a little lemon shot into it but otherwise pass.
Roy, been there, done that....hope to do it again someday! Positively gorgeous where you are. |
AnnMarie_C -
(Saying hello, for starters! Long time no see!) Any scoop on who has great mojitos in SA? My first one was in SA at Boudro's but I prefer their prickly pear rita. |
Hi Moldy!
Gosh, I'll have to ask our friends who live downtown...they are the anti-AnnMarie, very hip and in-the-know. ;-) Also, they are a fan of the mojito. OO and Seamus are great resources...hopefully, they'll see this. Will get back with you. Hope all is well where you are! |
Hi AnnMarie and Moldy! Long time no see is right!! Mojitos...sob...you are making me miss my Florida home! I had my first one in South Beach, then DH brought the tradition to his Tampa hotel. I haven't had one since we left there though...it's just one of those things that doesn't cross the border easily, in my mind anyway. They are so great on a hot muggy night. We are in margarita land now, and they are better here than they were in FL. :) Maybe we should have a margarita tasting GTG??
|
Hi OO!
Are there some good bars downtown Moldy should check out in search of the Mojito? Swig, I believe, is mostly a martini / cigar bar? That's the extent of my knowledge. Moldy, when do you plan to go back? I'll be sure to email said friends and let you know what they come up with. We'll have to travel to California for that margarita GTG :-D |
Drop me an email at my screen name @gmail.com if you have a few minutes. I'll give you the scoop of my upcoming road trip.
OO - I do know that the mojitos at Boudro's are quite good. I debate which I prefer but pretty well stick with the prickly pear ritas since I don't know anyone else who makes them! After the week I've had this week, I'd love a rita tasting! I'm afraid that I'd find them all delicious - even if I were drinking river water! Nothing like TAKS testing & swine flu paranoia among the masses in a high school! |
You've got mold...I mean mail! :-)
|
AnnMarie, it sounds as if you and I have about the same amount of bar experience. Party animals, si? The only bar I've been to downtown is Zinc (a wine bar primarily), which is pretty nice and upscale as far as bars in San Antonio go. They've got a nice New Orleans style patio as well. Because they are owned by Boudros, I suspect that their mojitos would be similar to theirs, but still, it's nice for the atmosphere. http://zincwine.com/zinc/ We've had a couple of events there...one in a separate room and one in their wine cellar...a dinner, and what a cool place for a dinner. Literally. :) The bar area is wood floored and brick walled. Other than that, I dunno.
Hmm....Maybe try Pesca? They have a very hip bar area and might be a good place for a Mojito. Pesca is on the Riverwalk level of the Watermark Hotel. There is a drawback to your spouse working in the tourism hub of the city...he rarely wants to return to it after he gets home from work. Same thing when we lived in New Orleans. Visitors probably know more about the French Quarter than I did! :) |
The only reason why anyone would diss San Antonio margaritas is because they sampled the ritas at a cheesy tourist trap instead of a local's hangout. For sheer yumminess, I'll second the Boudros/Zinc recommendation for their prickly pear rita, but there are tons of different and excellent margaritas in this town. I may have to check out those famous California margaritas next time I'm out there, though.
For mojitos, I really enjoy the ones at Azuca (in Southtown), probably because they're super cheap during happy hour. :) Swig has okay mojitos, too, and they're always "on special". Which means that, unlike the rest of their drinks menu, the price won't give you a heart attack. They still ain't cheap, but I like that place because it is literally within stumbling distance of home. Always helpful! |
mi tiara's is a great place, can't handle margaritas myself, stick to beer, but if they can't make them, no one can!!
