And speaking of the WTC/WFC area. If you are taking the escalator up on Vesey street to get over West Street, move to the right side of the escalator if you choose to stand. The left side is for people walking up the escalator.

julesj66 Apr 24th, 2007 10:34 AM

LOL .. we need our own forum!

lizziea06 Apr 24th, 2007 10:42 AM

I forgot to add "or else I'll poke you in the butt with my umbrella."

JarredK Apr 24th, 2007 10:47 AM

lizzea06 - this rule also applies to the escalator coming off the 4/5/6 at Grand Central and several other places as well.

julesj66 - this thread is nothing. Get me started on my grievances against cabbies themselves and we'll need our own separate website.

GoTravel Apr 24th, 2007 10:53 AM

Note to self: Never again try and walk 'up' Wall Street at 8:55 AM on a Monday morning.

Dohlice Apr 24th, 2007 11:00 AM

Haha. That’s probably why they tend to dive out of the way down here. People do all tend to move in the same direction and with the tunnel-like streets it’s like a tidal wave coming at you. I always had the misfortune of going “the wrong way” in Grand Central and it’s like being thrown to the lions.

GoTravel Apr 24th, 2007 11:02 AM

It was scary.

Oh. Crap.

MichelleNYC .. I used to work in 30 Rock ... what a nightmare! I'd add 10 minutes to my commute during the holidays ... my entrance was behind the Christmas tree.

And don't get me started on the elevator ride to the 50th floor!

julesj66 Apr 24th, 2007 11:39 AM

michelleNYC - I was also going to say, I feel your pain! Especially at X-mas time, but hey - last Friday too!

JarredK - we definitely could use a site like that - just a message board really is all that's needed!

Dohlice Apr 24th, 2007 11:42 AM

Have you ever looked at the website - overheardinnewyork.com? The language can be crazy but there is some hilarious stuff on there.

michelleNYC Apr 24th, 2007 12:33 PM

My entrance is right behind where the Xmas tree is as well. It truly is a nightmare. In the evening when I leave there's only so much "people dodging" you can do before you want to scream! I feel like saying, "please just don't stand in the middle... please move to the side or move along at a fairly brisk pace" so I can get home or to a meeting!! Christmas time is just beyond.

There's a name for people who stop in turnstiles, at the top of escalotrs, and in the middle of stairs:

Snowboarders.

Really? Why? Did I just hear the sound of a joke going over my head?

Gekko Apr 24th, 2007 01:34 PM

I call them "road kill."

BarryK Apr 25th, 2007 04:07 AM

hdm - Guess you have to be a skier for that one... If so, you'd notice how snoboarders have a knack of sprawling out at the entrance to the lift lines, but more annoying and dangerous, near the exit to the chair lifts.

hdm Apr 25th, 2007 06:07 AM

Ah. Got it. Not a skier but I can picture it.

Dohlice Apr 25th, 2007 07:09 AM

I got it BarryK - and you just brought back my winter rage!

flatfeet Apr 25th, 2007 07:11 AM

Glad to know I wasn't alone in needing to vent. Thought twice about starting this post as I'd hate to reinforce the grumpy new yorker stereotype but I couldn't help it! Plus I want all visitors to have a great time here and not be mystified by why we all seem so impatient. Maybe we need to make a list of street/subway rules and distribute them at LGA, JFK and EWR:-)

Mixter603 Apr 25th, 2007 07:41 AM

Great info flatfeet. I agree with everything especially the folks that like to walk 3/4/5 across in the financial district at lunchtime. Very annoying.
