LV to SanFran roads on a harley...
Hi from Australia,
Im meeting friends for a long weekend in vegas on 26th march 2015. Then from Mon 30th mar I'll be on a Harley with no set plans until the following weekend. I'm quite looking forward to the open road and some quiet time alone after partying. I plan to ride to sanfran over 2 days using this route http://gocalifornia.about.com/od/top...m#step-heading basically the 95 into the 190 into the 395 into the 89 then 50. My question is will all those roads be open and safe for a motorcycle in a couple of weeks? Im worried the 89 might be closed...can anyone help steer me with current conditions please? many thanks |

There is absolutely no way to tell. right now (a few days before your trip the situation will be clearer) And it isn't just hwy 89. We unfortunately are in a drought and except for a couple of storms, the roads have been pretty much open/clear/mostly dry all winter. But March is still snow season and if we get snow you'll have nearly 300 hundred miles of potentially snow covered roads. But there is no need to pre-plan since this will be off season. If there is no storm/snow you can take that route (and it will be fabulous). If there is a storm/snow -- head west instead and up the coast to San Francisco (which would also be fabulous) |
not long now, I will be in vegas on Thursday, riding out toward san fran on Monday 30th... I see the forecast looks pretty dry. Are the 395 and the 89 still nice and clear? thank for your help guys...

Just one word of advice - keep an eye on your gas tank and always get gas when you can -- before you need it.
A couple of years ago, my husband rode from New Mexico to San Francisco and almost ran out of gas. He passed a station without topping up, believing there was another gas station not far ahead. There wasn't, anymore. So, his takeaway - always get it while you can! |
There was snow yesterday but all is supposed to be clear/warm for the next week.
