Luxor or MGM Grand?
Hi all,
Four of us girls (mid-twenties) are heading to Vegas for my sister's birthday. Due to pricing and the want of clean rooms we have narrowed the hotels down to two: MGM Grand or the Luxor. Have never stayed at either, any info would be great! Thanks! |
Luxor!! No contest!!
|
I agree, the MGM is cavernous, and the Luxor is more fun, esp. the pyramid rooms. I also think the smoke levels are worse in the basement casino of the MGM. You can take walkways and/or the tram to the two bordering hotels (the Mandalay Bay casino/ shops/ restaurants are really nice, I think) and Excalibur (to go elsewhere, not to visit!).
|
Personally, I found the public areas in the Luxor to be dark and grim.
Yes, the MGM has one of the largest hotel lobbies anywhere and the rooms actually have vertical walls but if its something unusual you prefer then I'd also opt for the Luxor. |
If poolside time is part of the plan, I'd give the nod to MGM. Its location is a little better too. Like Dukey, I find Luxor dark and unwelcoming. Also, I'm scratching my head about the MGM "basement casino" comment. :-?
|
I think the Luxor has a tower with "vertical wall" rooms. Although I think those rooms are more expensive.
|
Thanks all, these comments may just help us decide. The pool at the MGM seems to be the pull, but will it really matter when we're going in March? I heard some of the pools aren't even open til April...
|
Some are open. See MGM:

Oh, I would double check with the hotels to make sure this data is up to date.
|
I have stayed at both hotels in my 20's. I like MGM better. Studio 54 at MGM is alot of fun. Even though it's only up the road a little bit from Luxor I feel it's a better location. If you are looking to have a party weekend I would suggest MGM. I had a great party weekend there. :)
|
I've been too both, haven't stayed at either. I concur with Duke that MGM is in a better location. Good south strip spot, though fairly easy walk to Center/ Mid strip properties.
|
Loved MGM! Also - a plus - the monorail has a station here.
Also... Great frozen drink stand! A Starbucks! Great restaurants! Rooms were nice! 8-) |
I'm a little surprised by the enthusiasm for the Luxor; I opened this post thinking it would be MGM hands down.
In any event, MGM is better located--at the fringe of mid-Strip, but within easy walking distance of it. Luxor, which may appear on a map to be right next to the MGM, is, on foot at least 15 minutes away. |
Oh yeah, I forgot.. the best margaritas in Vegas, in my opinion, are at the Mexican resturant on the way to the pool at MGM. The rooms in pyramid at the Luxor are not that good. They are older than the tower rooms and all they have is one slated wall. Not a big deal.

I am always surprised and also disappointed hen I see comments like Socialworker's...and I say this with the very greatest of respect for that person...but it really would help if some rationale were posted along with things such as "No Contest!"
I have no doubt whatsoever that Socialworker knows whats/he is talking about but the REASON for the enthusiasm might even tip the balance. Just my opinion. |
The one and only time I stayed at the Luxor, I was less than impressed. Staff weren't friendly or helpful; my room was no better than anything I'd encountered at at Motel 6. The MGM had a much better overall vibe. And my friends who stayed there had much nicer rooms.
|
Great, thanks for all the comments! We're going with the MGM and I don't think we'll be disappointed :)

you are right, Dukey.....that was just me being flippant, b/c I have such a low opinion of MGM Grand. If you click on my name, you will see that I usually respond w/what some might say, is an excrutiating level of detail....When I first read the question, an image of Tom Cruise (in his pre-crazy days) and Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man popped into my head. I saw Rain Man telling his brother that he wants to go to K-Mart, and his brother says, "No" and when Rain Man asks why not, brother says, "K-Mart sucks", and I guess that is the way I feel about MGM. I just would never stay there...the theme is all wrong for Vegas, it is the size of some small countries and competely un-navegable, among many other things, IMO.
I have a 20 something year old son and I could not imagine him and his friends there, for the life of me, and since OP is in her 20s, I just gave the short version of my feelings about the 2 locales.... :) |
happytrails, do you know you are quoted in a Fodor's guidebook?
|
jakes_girl: have you considered any other properties?
