Luau's
Among Germaine's, Royal Hawaiian, and Paradise Cove, which luau party would you suggest. Thanks for your help.
Try Ali'i Luau at Polynesian Cultural Center. The drive farther from Waikiki but show is better.
YUCK do not go the Polynesian Cultural center as waste of your time and money.

All of the Luas on Oahu are very commercial and in my mind not worth the splurge unless you are up for cheese. Can be fun but don't the idea that you are seeing a ritual practised as it was centuries ago.

On Oahu you have many world class restaurants like Alan Wong's, 3666, on the Rise, Roy's and many more. I suggest you spend your money here and have an experience you will remember in a good way.

Only Luau on Oahu that is respected among locals is "Old Lahaina Luau" on Mauai, most others are a waste of time and money.

Yikes I intended to say only Luau that is worth your money and time is Old Lahaina Luau" on Maui. This luau is advertised to locals on all of the islands. I doubt you will see locals attending the others mentioned. It is on Mauai not Oahu.
Yikes I meant to say that I never go anyplace to just have fun. Unless something is done today just exactly as it was centuries ago I don't waste the time and money. Yuck most everything in Hawaii is just commercial.
Agree with first two xxx stick with Old Lahaina Luau or none at all.

Do a archive search on this and you will see that most foderites including posters who live in the islands choose old Lahaina.
we already have a reservation for the old lahaina luau, we also have a reservation for the feast at lele. Should we do both or are they different enough that we would enjoy both of them.Betty
We went to the Feast at Lele on Maui. The food was better than other luaus we've been to and we had our own table in front. The food is served to you so you don't have to stand in a buffet line. They had a cancellation, so we lucked out with the private table.

I agree that luau's are a big waste of money. Roy's is a much better meal!! If you like them, then enjoy it.
I wouldn't recommend going to the Polynesian Cultural Center just for the food, but if you are really interested in the dancing, the show at the PCC is terrific. They have a large "theater," and the night we went it was 80-90% full (in late July). Another reader a couple of weeks ago said they were sold out the night they wanted to go and they had to choose another night. Obviously a lot of people like the place!

Paradise Cove = Waste of Time AND $
The evening show at PCC is fabulous, as someone above said, I would do the Ali'i Luau and show there........
Good grief, this post was from 2002...... why am I answering it? :-d

I would have to agree. Having lived on Oahu, a long time ago..., I have seen many luau's. But the "Old Lahaina Luau" is by far the best, most authentic, that I have seen. Don't ever expect much from Luau food. A little pork, a little potato, salad, a little this and that. But the dancing and music are usually great and the participation fun. If you are interested in the native Hawaiian dance, I would suggest looking into somewhere that presents both styles, Kahiko and Awana (sp?)
