We used to live on the Red Line, so the advent of the Silver Line was a godsend to us, eliminating several changes on the way to or from the airport.

Our worst experience with the MBTA trip planner was a route that involved taking a 2-mile bus ride from a subway station to an address that turned out to be across the street from the station. I have also encountered that instruction to walk from the airport to Maverick station.

BTW they changed the acronym from MTA to MBTA in 1964.

Glad to be corrected re: Silver Line. Wouldn't make sense for it to be set up if people weren't using it. But I did say I was only there for a week and the one time I was told to use it, I ended up walking quite a long ways and discovered I could have done something else without the trek. Not worth detailing - suffice it to say, the Silver Line is a great boon for those to whom it's a great boon. Bravo to the . . .

I didn't feel right writing MTA but thought it had reverted from MBTA again without my hearing about it. And don't Bostonians still refer to it as "the T" anyway?

okay, am I the only one that thinks that if you are getting in at 3PM, and have an international flight at 8PM, you don't have enough time to go into Boston? Maybe its just me, because I'd keep thinking about getting through the traffic to get back.

I think that if gailw arrives at 3pm (Terminal C), waits for her luggage, transfers to Terminal E (Virgin Atlantic), checks in and gets her BP(!!!); she should be able to leave the airport by 4-4:30pm?

She should be able to get to the Legal at Long Wharf by 5pm the latest. Dinner 5-6pm, then head back to Logan by 6:30pm.

Since she would have already checked-in for her Virgin flight, she doesn't need to return to Logan super-early. I never encounter any long security lines at Logan, so 6:30pm for an 8pm flight is plenty of time.

Having said that, I don't think she'll have time to go all the way to Copley and/or Newbury Street. Safer to stick with the Legal at Long Wharf.

There is no &quot;traffic to get through&quot; if she takes the T, especially if she sticks to the waterfront area and uses only the Blue line.

I'm following all of your exchanges with interest. First, sorry about calling it the MTA -- the last time I lived in Massachusetts was 1970, the last 4 years of which I was in college in Worcester and had almost no contact with Boston. My poor little brain cells are frozen in time.
The suggestion about the Legal at Long Wharf sounds good. My Significant Other is enamored of Legal and I'm just trying to keep him happy. Hours spent cooling our heels in airport waiting areas are a torment, so this might be the best idea of all. It'll depend on how fast we can dump the luggage and get checked in.

gail - if all else fails and you have to stay at the Airport (eg your incoming flight is very delayed), please note that there is a Legal Seafoods restaurant in Terminal C, land-side (ie, before security).
