LBTS..........your opinion please

I have read through the threads on LBTS and haven't seen anything really current.

We will be there for 1 week in Feb. We are looking for a place that is a 1 bedroom or efficiency for 150$ or under. It must have a nice pool area and be on the beach. A balcony or private patio area would be a plus.

I look forwward to reading your helpful suggestions! Thanks.

You may want check into the Oasis which is an oceanfront motel and across El Mar Drive place (it extends across from the ocean). Never stayed there but remember walking El Mar Oceanside around that area seeing a big olympic sized pool. I stayed at the Coral Key Inn only (across from the ocean with access to ocean immediately after crossing) and they have a really nice sized 1 BD ($109/night) suite with a king, walk in closet, full kitchen and they have small pool. I do remember Oasis' "Sandy Shoes" Cafe which has a wonder traditional breakfast buffet on a patio that overlooks the ocean. Someone else may be able to help you out since I stayed a little past Commerce and I know there are a few oceanfront motels in LBTS before you get to Commerce. There is a small mall with a Publix and Eckerd and other small shops and a Walgreens on A1A.

I know the old "if you have to ask" routine but what the Hell does this stand for???

reneeinva Jan 12th, 2005 04:00 AM

Long Beach Time Square?

Dan Jan 12th, 2005 04:05 AM

Why do people use the acronyms that aren't generally understood?!? Argh!!!

Dan Jan 12th, 2005 04:06 AM

"aconymfinder.com" comes up with:
Land-Based Test Site
Large Blast Thermal Simulator
Longitudinal Balance Test Set

Dan - that's pretty funny. Thanks for the morning laugh! :)

I always thought it was GLBTS (gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgendered/transsexual).

WhyNot Jan 12th, 2005 06:26 AM

Thanks for your suggestions. I will check them out.

I am so sorry I offended some of you. Believe me it was NOT my intention. Actually, if I wanted to be offensive, I could have done a much better job.

I always appreciate the terrific advice I get from this site. I especially value the opinions of those that write about places they have stayed themselves. I believe that is what this site is intended for....getting travel advice.

I welcome any other suggestions.

reneeinva Jan 12th, 2005 06:36 AM

I am pretty sure we were all just joking around...

amwosu Jan 12th, 2005 07:03 AM

Hey WhyNot, sometimes we respond prior to our coffee or chocolate fix. I figured if I don't know what LBTS stands for I surely can't offer advice on the location. But now I am very curious to know what it really stands for.

BeachBoi Jan 12th, 2005 07:12 AM

Not sure why WhyNot didnt just come out clearly indicate, but here's the official website of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea........http://www.lbts.com/

WhyNot Jan 12th, 2005 07:12 AM

LBTS stands for Lauderdale By The Sea.......definitely a lesson learned for me.

Cheers

Dan Jan 12th, 2005 07:29 AM

Thanks Beachboi. This thread would only have about 4 or 5 responses had "Lauderdale-by-the-Sea" been mentioned.

The sad thing is that I'm from South Florida originally and still didn't pick up on it! Now it makes total sense.

WhyNot Jan 12th, 2005 07:41 AM

All I need is info..........I have done the web site thing. I was hoping for some 1st hand experiences with the accomodations.

As I wrote before, I have had wonderful suggestions on other questions I have posed.

Still hope to get some more about this post.

While I haven't personally stayed in any of these, the following have been recommended and are all on the beach:
Tropic Seas Resort(tropicseasresort.com)
Pier Pointe Ocean Resort
Sea Lord Hotel(sealordhotel.com)

JoJo1 Jan 12th, 2005 11:32 AM

I have friends who had a bad experience at Pier Pointe, but good experience at High Noon. We have stayed at Villa Caprice and really like it but it would be more than the $150 per night you mentioned....

GoTravel Jan 12th, 2005 12:20 PM

I have stayed in and liked The Captain's Quarters but I recommended it to BuffaloGirl and she had a less than stellar experience. The manager tried to put them in a crummy room.

The Seaward Apartments are my favorite but no pool and no website.

Keep in mind your dates are peak season and Feb 18-25th is President's Week. It is the busiest week of the year for South Florida lodging.

WhyNot Jan 12th, 2005 06:03 PM

Go Travel.....THANKS.....we will be there FEB 7 for a week.

Heartburn3 Jan 12th, 2005 06:14 PM

FYI -- Pier Pointe and the El Mar are both under construction. JoJo's friends should be happy to hear this news...LOL

Patrick Jan 12th, 2005 06:22 PM

For LBTS, my first choice would probably be UHRGS, but if that's too expensive or already booked, you might want to try the KJBV.

Heartburn3 Jan 12th, 2005 06:39 PM

Patrick, I'd love to know which hotels/motels those acronyms pertain to. I have a list of accommodations along El Mar Drive in front of me and don't see any matching those acronyms. Please "spell it out" for me.

Thank you.

BuffaloGirl Jan 13th, 2005 04:36 AM

Hi Heartburn - haven't talked to you in a while! I think Patrick is just being silly!!!!

WhyNot: GoTravel is very reluctant to suggest Captain's Quarters, one of her favorite places, because of a problem I had there. But I have to honestly tell you that it is a very clean, decent place to stay with a beautiful courtyard and pool area situated on a beautiful beach! You just step down from the patio right onto the beach. I would definitely stay there again! There's a hotel next door that has a pool bar that serves inexpensive, yummy drinks and some food, which is a nice convenience.

It seemed as though some of the hotels in LBTS were dumpy (at least from the outside), and despite my room problem, was glad to stay at CQ's.

If you decide to stay there, just be sure to ask for the name of the person you make the reservation with, date and time, etc. They don't send a confirmation.

I hope this helps!

WhyNot Jan 13th, 2005 07:28 AM

THANKS so much for your comments Buffalo Girl! Captain Quarter's looked good on their website.

Patrick Jan 13th, 2005 08:51 AM

I can't believe that after the discussion about not knowing what LBTS, (and I for one didn't have a clue either), that somebody actually took my post seriously. Talk about whizz over the head. Sorry, if you didn't get it.

Heartburn3 Jan 13th, 2005 04:10 PM

Sorry.... I was just calling Patrick on his silly response. Thought I'd put on my duhhhhhh cap and have some fun with him! I really do have a list of all the decent looking motels along El Mar Drive... in case anybody wants it. ([email protected])

It's difficult for anyone to find a listing of all those motels along El Mar, so I took a drive up that way a few weeks ago and made a list. By the way (I dare not write "BTW"...lol) all the motels that were owned by the same company north of the pier area on both sides of El Mar are fenced up and out of business or waiting to be renovated or something of that nature. Just thought I'd throw that info out there for anyone trying to reach them. Sorry, I don't recall the name, but would probably remember if anyone mentioned it.

BuffaloGirl Jan 13th, 2005 04:47 PM

Sorry, my fingers were moving too fast!

WhyNot: FYI (oh no, more intials).....

When I made my reservations with CQ's, I requested a room with double beds and a kitchenette. I was traveling with a female friend....not my husband. I asked the very male, heavy accented, gentleman who took my reservation if I needed to send a down payment and if I could get a confirmation. He told me it was not necessary. (Because this is a small mom and pop place, I didn't think this was strange).

Upon arrival (late at night, after the office was closed - they left the key), we found ourselves in the smallest room I've ever seen with one bed and no kitchenette! In the morning we checked with the office, and were told by the female owner that we got the room we asked for. I told her that was wrong, and she asked me who I made the reservation with. When I told her it was with a male who had a thick accent, she commented that she is the only one who makes reservations. I told her she sounds like a large male with a thick accent on the phone (the young office personnel were looking at each other uncomfortably).

I came to the conclusion that they don't ask for deposits and give confirmations so that they can change things around as they feel necessary. We ended up moving our luggage to four different rooms on our vacation, but it was better than staying in the initial room.

My suggestion to you is ask for the name of the person who takes your reservation, and then send a small down payment with your own confirmation - a letter or something stating what the down payment is for and who you spoke to.

I know this sounds like too much trouble, but I would definitely stay there again if I just took these few small steps.

Then again, I was so happy to get out of Buffalo in March on short notice, I might have stayed just about anywhere!!!

Have fun...and the beach there is beautiful!!!

Stephanie Jan 13th, 2005 04:56 PM

the people who know LBTS, want to keep it a secret because it is such a nice beachtown that we never type out the town's name.

WhyNot Jan 14th, 2005 08:06 AM
