Las Vegas Hotel Questions
 

Planning to surprise my husband with a two day midweek trip to Las Vegas for his birthday in February. Neither of us have been to Vegas in at least 20 years. We are not interested in gambling. We want to see the art at the Bellagio, maybe visit the Guggenheim, see the "new" hotels (to us they will be new since we havent been in 20 years) and have a birthday dinner at either Bobby Flay's restaurant or one of Mario Batali's restaurants.

The hotels I am looking at are the Mirage, MGM Grand, Treasure Island, and New YOrk New York. These all have reasonable prices.

What would you suggest?

Personally the Mirage is my favorite of those listed. It is closer to the Venetian, Caesar's, the Wynn and Encore.

MGM Grand and New York New York are nice too, but I prefer Mirage, just MO though. ALso, MGM and New York are closer to Mandalay Bay, Luxor, and Planet Hollywood.

The Bellagio is in the middle, so fairly close to all those hotels except Treasure Island. TI's rooms are nice, but I think their casino is just plain and boring.

NYNY and MGM are almost across from each other and both near the bus stop (the Deuce). Have you looked at Luxor? It's quite nice and you can get great rates there.

Prices in Vegas should be low in February, and due to the economy. Given that, I'd try to stay more mid-strip --- Venetian, Palazzo, Bellagio, etc. I think the MGM Grand is too far from everything else, and the last time I was in the Luxor, I was less than impressed (to say the least). What kind of prices are you seeing?

Treasure Island has been running a great special with their petite suites.

And the Wynn has had some great prices. Great customer service and the most comfortable bed in Las Vegas.

I just got back from NYNY. It's fine and the prices of the restaurants in the hotel were reasonable.

Go to Hard Rock Hotel hey are running a deal for $55.00 a night.

Staying on the srtip is overated.

If you don't stay on the strip the cab fare will kill you.

If you can get a deal at Venetian the rooms are suppose to be larger and very nice.

Guggenheim - this has closed.

The Venetian Rooms are very nice. Even their basic room has a separate sitting area which makes it very nice. There is plenty to do within the hotel. The Mexican restaurant is very good.

Definitely stay on the strip and within walking distance of the Bellagio fountains...sigh.

the wynn and hard rock are off the strip and since there is so much new stuff for you to see, and you only have two days definitly stay on the strip.
of the ones you suggested, i'd pick the mirage then treasure island.
i'd also look at the flamingo (the GO rooms are suppose to be nice). it is in the harrah chain so you can see the prices on all their hotels. paris is also in a great location.

The Wynn is not off the strip.
It's on the Strip, next to the Palazzo and conveniently across from the Fashion Show Mall (if you think you're into shopping) I watched the pirate ship show at TI from my room. It was about a 20-30 minute walk to Caesar's Palace as I recall

Stay at the Wynn if you want the most comfortable bed on the strip.
I have emails from them with starting rates at $109 some nights.

Careful of how you book. A friend and I were booking rooms separately for the same days at NYNY. She chose a different path on the website and her rate (for the same package) was $20 higher. Luckily we were comparing notes and she followed my path.

Our stay at NYNY was great for the price. But we missed the comfy beds and soaking tub at the Wynn.

We stayed at Bellagio in November. Don't know what your price range is, but check it out. Great location, nice rooms, our was overlooking the fountain show.

Nice bars all around. Didn't gamble, so can't comment on that. But we really liked the atmosphere and the location. Paris across the street was nice too

I found a rate of $55 at the Monte Carlo. What are your thoughts on this hotel?

Of the ones you've mentioned, Mirage would be your best bet. I do think that Monte Carlo is of the same tier..

I stayed at the Mirage for Thanksgiving and I must admit I enjoyed seeing the dolphins and tigers/lions. Best $15 you can spend in Vegas!

Yes, horatio, I totally agree with you. I meant to state that Monte Carlo was NOT of the same tier as the Mirage.

Sorry to hear the Guggenheim has closed.

I made a reservation for NY NY for 65 a night. The Bellagio, Venetian, Mirage, were all over 150 a night. I'll keep checking the other hotels periodically to see if any deals come up and can always cxl NY NY if one of the better hotels offers a lower rate.

Got a recent email that the Mandalay Bay is starting a $69 dollar a night special beginning Mar. 1st. Maybe this is a bit too late considering the birthday present.As well, you may consider that too far down the strip but so is NYNY if you consider the core to be Caesar's palace area.

Was the Wynn not available?
If you go direct to their website..$109 mid-week..
beds, linens and the highest quality of room and service is really hard to beat.
$65 for NYNY seems high and it's your husband birthday..you can face the golf course at the Wynn.

Have you phoned directly to the properties..I find there is sometimes such a discrepcancy between differing phone operators at reservations...
