Las Vegas cheap rooms

im planning a trip to vegas. i have specific dates set as of yet. but a good timeframe would probably be sometime this fall. i have been to vegas only once before, so i am somewhat already familiar with it.

this 2nd trip, i am looking for somewhat of a budget accomdations. i dont want to stray too far away from the heart of the strip. ive heard negative things about many of the hotels in the older part of the strip: like four queens, golden nugget.

i havent heard much on circus circus, i dont know if the accomodations are good, bad or what.

during my first visit i stayed at the clarion on flamingo, about 3 blocks east of the strip, next to the tuscany.

the accomodations were average fare. nice, but not lavish. and honestly, thats all i need is just a small nice quiet room to nap in. i dont need 5,000 thread count cotton sheets to sleep on, i dont need italian wine for breakfast, or truffles hand-fed to me with filet mignon. just the basics.

but on the same token, i dont want to be grossed out either. i dont want to see rusted out furnaces, dark smokey smelley rooms. rude service, etc.

where can i guy like me get a good decent room without shelling out a whole lot of dough? i dont mind being a bit off the strip, but within walking distance.

the clarion hotel i stayed in was a bit of a walk for me, id like to stay maybe just a tad bit closer. but if push comes to shove, ill walk the extra distance if it saves me lots of money, as i can always sit down somewhere and take a break from walking.

i looked at some websites that offered promo codes for $50 a night for a room..thats pretty much what id like to pay for a room each night,..maybe even less, if you have any suggestions. $30 or $40 a room would be more suitable.

im the type of person that would hardly even be in my room..id go there to sleep, maybe watch some tv, and take a shower, then im out for the rest of the day seeing and exploring the strip.

im sorry, i meant..i do not have specific dates set..but you probably already figured that out as you read along.

Try looking on I4VEGAS.com - usually good rates. Of course you know that the rates are considerably lower Sunday-Thursday, if you can plan your trip on those days you'll find a lot better deals than on a weekend. Also - the 4th of July is usually pretty busy so the rates go up then too.

If you're coming here Sun-Thurs try the Flamingo, Bally's, Monte Carlo, Sahara, Tropicana - I'd avoid Circus Circus and Stratosphere - just my opinion. You could also try Palace Station - it's off the strip on Sahara, but they have a shuttle to the Strip and they sometimes have great deals. Also try the Orleans - on Tropicana off the Strip, but also with a shuttle bus, or the Gold Coast on Flamingo.

Circus2 is a dump. Downtown you can get deals but then you'll have to taxi to the Strip. Really depends on what you are going for...to gamble, stay in the Old Town, you'll do better there anyway. Fewer decks in the shoe, no 00 on some roulette wheels, single-deck blackjack, etc. If you are going for shows & nightlife try some of the older &/or out of the way places. The Trop is pretty cheap & pretty '70's. Check out Hooters as well.

happytrailstoyou Jun 6th, 2007 10:08 AM

Seems like the Motel 6 might be your speed.

Gellers Jun 6th, 2007 10:34 AM

Downtown isn't that bad, really, and you do have better gambling odds there. The Golden Nugget is quite nice. I'd prefer staying there about a thousand times over staying at Circus Circus!

mireaux7 Jun 6th, 2007 10:49 AM

id stay at a cheaper place, but for food im going back to the rio's buffet!!

FainaAgain Jun 6th, 2007 11:31 AM

I wouldn't stay at Circus. I love children, but mine are adults now, and I want peace and quiet, not others' kids running around. I'll have all that when travelling with grandkids (hopefully!).

We stayed at Stratosphere, Sahara, Flamingo, Tropicana. Room-wise, Strat was the best. Location-wise - Flamingo.

Sahara was the optimal for us: still on the strip, on the bus and monorail lines, cheap and clean, good breakfast buffet, casino is not over-busy.

I love the Golden Nugget! Service was great at every level of the hotel.

I'll be downtown at the Golden Nugget very soon. Others in our group will be at Main Street Station. I'm looking forward to being downtown again. Also, check out Orleans which is off strip, but an easy 5 minute drive to South Strip. It's a sister prop to the Gold Coast, also a good choice.

MelissaHI Jun 7th, 2007 11:56 AM

Trippin, I can't tell you 1) how jealous I am and 2) how hard I'm working to finagle some kind of writing trip to Vegas! I thought I could do it in time to crash your reunion, but no luck. :(

I just found out one of my acquaintances/colleagues is a poker shark and gets invited to play at Harrah's tournaments there like, once a month.

trippinkpj Jun 7th, 2007 12:18 PM

You would of been one welcome party crasher Melissa!

Bikom Jun 7th, 2007 01:07 PM

The Orleans is a good option, just off the strip, but a nice property and, usually, very good rates. Check out the review on Cheapovegas.

If you're dates are flexible, may I suggest the Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday before Thanksgiving, if thats an option for you? I've been going then for the last 4 or 5 years and the rates are about as low as they get all year. We usually get a room at either Mandalay or Bellagio in the 110-140 range, which is great for those properties, I'm sure you'd find similar savings at most casinos.

as far as cleanliness goes, I'd check out sites like tripadvisor, which has alot of tourists posting about their recent stays.

SDP Jun 14th, 2007 05:35 AM

We stayed at Bill's Gambling Hall and Saloon for $50 per night and its on the strip. It was a nice place and good location.

ggoosey Jun 16th, 2007 08:28 PM

Here is another site that has been floating around for vegas-promotions.com If your dates are flexible then this could really be of good use to you.

Ralphie Jun 17th, 2007 03:55 PM

"ive heard negative things about many of the hotels in the older part of the strip: like four queens, golden nugget."

those places aren't even on the strip at all; you must be referring to the "downtown" area.

I'd look into some of the smaller, older hotels near the center of the strip such as Bill's and Imperial Palace. I"ve never stayed at these places so I can't recommend, but I've read lots of posts on message boards such as lvtalk.com where people rave about going to these places year after year for good prices, so they must be doing something right.

TahitiTams Jun 17th, 2007 04:06 PM

I've stayed at the Golden Nugget last year and had a blast and room rates on Expedia were $49 a night plus $75 food credit..How great is that!
I really enjoyed the Nugget and the room was nice..
To me $50 a night at a 4 star hotel is super cheap!

SuCo27 Jun 17th, 2007 06:44 PM

Check travelzoo.com for some great deals. I booked the Hard Rock thru there this past spring for half their web price, plus got a stack of coupons to use at their restaurants and bars. Also, there's a great article in this month's National Geographic Traveler on insider tips for Vegas. One of them deals with cheap hotels just off the Strip. Have fun!

tracys2cents Jun 18th, 2007 03:53 AM

www.goldcoastcasino.com

About a mile from the strip, but with free shuttle service. Its two neighbor hotels, The Rio and The Palms, also have free shuttles that you can use. With these shuttles, the Gold coast is actually easier to get to from center strip than many of the strip hotels are....because even the ones that aren't a mile away don't have shuttles...you'll be taking long hot walks or using taxis.

trippinkpj Jun 18th, 2007 07:58 AM

I just stayed at the Orleans off strip (1 night) and the Golden Nugget downtown (2 nights). I personally preferred the Orleans location just 1 1/2 miles off strip, to downtown. It was an easy 5 minute drive (or shuttle bus trip) to south strip. The Gold Coast is also a good spot nearby, as Tracy mentioned.

trippinkpj Jun 18th, 2007 08:00 AM

TT- The Golden Nugget is very nice, although with most of their renovations complete, I don't think the bargains of last year will happen again. The pool area is great though. :-)

SaraWOO Sep 9th, 2007 06:43 PM

Where ever your decide to stay I recommend you check the promotional offers at this vegas site, you may even find cheaper prices then you expected.

SmarterVegas.com - Go to the "promotional offers" tab.

btw: I wouldnt stay at the Circus Circus...

Enjoy your trip, no place like vegas ;)

that idea about going a couple of days prior to thanksgiving sounds awesome. it would be relatively deserted as far as huge crowds go, and if i could get a great rate on a luxury room, that may be worth it.

really, as far as when i go, im totally flexible. it more than likely will be in november, the way things are shaping out to be.

i dont recall seeing the bill's gambling hall and saloon..what other establishments is that adjacent to?

ideally, i would like to stay somewhere on the strip,..say off of tropicana or flamingo.

ive heard some say that they have recieved great deals at ballys.

smartcookie Sep 17th, 2007 06:10 PM

you can get good deals at imperial palace, especially mid-week. dates are really important though. there are a lot of conventions in Vegas. and going mid-week will cut the rate by more than half.

oneworldonenewyorker Sep 17th, 2007 06:39 PM

I hate me some old Vegas. Stratosphere is the worst. Stayed there once and had a dirty, dirty room.
Anyhow, after years of Vegas trips, mostly business, I stay at Mandalay. Not too bad and definitely worth the extra cash.

lifelist Sep 17th, 2007 07:04 PM

Bill's Gamblin' Hall is the new name of the Barbary Coast. The Stratosphere is actually an o.k. hotel. The rooms are decent and clean. The neighborhood isn't the best and it's far from the main part of the strip, but the Deuce will get you there pretty quick.

The Tropicana has $39-45 rooms for most of November right now. Have never stayed there, so I don't know how the rooms are, but the location is great.

Agree with the suggestion for the Sun-Wed/Thur before Thanksgiving - lots of great offers. NY-NY, TI both have offers at around $79 a night. Luxor has a stay 3 nights, get third night free for that time period (with rooms at $80 a night).

mireaux7 Oct 21st, 2007 01:16 PM

i have been doing some investigations as my trip to vegas is now nearing. im going in november for 3 days/2 night. i have already booked airline seats, and am now down to deciding upon what hotel to stay at.

as many of you may have read one of my prior posts, my last visit had me staying at the clarion on flamingo, just east of the tuscany. while the room was decent, the walk to and from the strip was a killer, especially when you consider ive been walking around all day anyways.

so, due to that, im am definitely prefering to stay on the strip as much as possible.

ive heard many say that they got great deals in old vegas, namely stratosphere..even as low as $20.00 a night.

im not as picky as most when it comes down to rooms..cause i will only use them to sleep and shower in...other than that,.im pretty much out and about along the strip the rest of the time. so being thats the case, it wouldnt make sense for me to pay $798.00 to stay 2 nights at the Bellagio.

Initially, I scoped out the Tropicana. it seemed like a great deal at first: 2 nights for $184.00. Some further research uncovered that, in addition to the aforementioned rate for 2 nights, you are also assessed a one-time, non-refundable "deposit fee" of $152.00. ...now youre thinking, oh, this is in case, you decide to take their bath towels, iron, or tv remote...wrong!..its non-refundable once you stay there. (so in essence, its similiar to a balloon payment on an automobile..its not featured as part of the rate, to make the rate look initially cheaper, but in the end,.you still owe it)

so, that $184.00 2-night stay at the tropicana,.is really costing $336.00..i can stay 2 nights at MGM Grand for less moolah.

i have investigated pretty much all the major strip hotels south of the Wynn down to Mandalay. Ive found rates that seem to vary from $228.00 up to $798.00. I would like to stay under $300.00

here are the hotels i have found that are under $300.00 for a two night stay in november:

Imperial Palace: $228.00
Flamingo: $235.00
Luxor: $270.00
Rio: $270.00
Monte Carlo: $269.00
Palms: $238.00

So which do you recommend to me? I know earlier I said Im pretty much a bare-bones kind of acommodation guy.,..but If paying a little extra gets me a nicer bed, jacuzzi, and all the other nicer ameninities...then..why not..right?

My only objection with staying in the older part of vegas is that im not fully aware of all of my transportation options going to and from each part of the strip, etc.

I know there are taxis,.someone also told me there is also a trolley.

what suprised me, is that Clark County prohibits the actual hotels from running a shuttle service going to and from the hotel to the aiport. you would think that would be a given neccessity...but i guess it creates too much traffic.

mireaux7 Oct 21st, 2007 01:19 PM

by the way,..is the san remo still in existence? im guessing not, i dont hear too many people mention it anymore.

doug_stallings Oct 21st, 2007 02:56 PM

The Flamingo is probably the best cheap option, though I usually choose it because of the great pool area, which is closed when you're there. The rooms are just OK, and the food there is very overpriced.

Did you price Excalibur? It's not a great hotel, but I stayed there last year, and the room was ok and they now have a great new spa. Oh ... the pool is heated and open year-round.

The Rio is pretty far from the Strip. It's walkable, but not easy.

When you are shopping for rates, be sure to check Expedia, Travelocity, and Orbitz. These booking engines sometimes offer better rates in LV than you can get through the hotel's own web site. I was able to stay at the Red Rock Resort in September by booking through Travelocity and even got a $50 resort credit. The hotel was sold out through its own web site.

John Oct 21st, 2007 03:06 PM

Didn't read ALL the answers to your question but I have just made reservations at the Flamingo the week before Christmas for $50.00 a night. Great location, clean rooms at that price though a little worn unless you grade up.

vegaslocal Oct 21st, 2007 03:50 PM

The San Remo is now Hooters.

Leburta Oct 21st, 2007 05:39 PM

The Flamingo and Imperial Palace will place you in the center of the strip and are the best priced on your list. I have stayed at both, and for the little bit more, I'd choose the Flamingo. Besides the great location, these two offer easy public transportation to any where you might want to go.

mireaux7 Oct 23rd, 2007 11:43 AM

err. I thought about staying at Imperial Palace, until I read one horrid review after another from disgusted guests who left feedback on travelocity complaining about being put in rooms next to rooms where live bands play all night..rooms that have old & dirty plumbing issues, cigarette stains in the carpet, etc.

I think Im shifting towards the Excalibur.,.however I may fork over a bit more and stay at MGM, NYNY, or Monte Carlo.

doug_stallings Oct 23rd, 2007 12:37 PM

MGM and Monte Carlo may be worth more money, but NY NY is not, in my opinion.

jannieween Oct 24th, 2007 01:51 AM

We just stayed at Caesar's Palace for $140 for 1 night with a 2 room upgrade to a suite. Good location for walking the strip and checking out the other casinos.

smartcookie Oct 24th, 2007 02:58 PM

Flamingo is the most central on your list. so if you're looking for convenience to other hotels, i would stay there even though the pool is closed. the Palms is very nice, but you'll have to cab to the strip from there, which will add to the cost. Also, check the Barbary Coast which is right next to the Flamingo. They have VERY nice rooms. Great beds and plasma tvs. I was pleasantly surprised when I stayed there.

chepar Oct 24th, 2007 05:58 PM

From your list, I would go with the Flamingo. I usually stay there because I prefer to stay in the center strip area.

This past August I decided to give Bill's (the old Barbary Coast) a try, which is next door to the Flamingo. It was cheaper and in some ways I preferred it to the Flamingo.

It's a small hotel, so you can leave your room and be out on the street in less than 5 minutes - no endless hotel corridors and a huge casino to navigate through.

The rooms were pretty nice and rather spacious - I read that they had been renovated fairly recently.

TxTravelPro Oct 24th, 2007 06:31 PM

I JUST checked in to the Hilton Grand Vacations Hotel on Las Vegas Blvd.
My room (APARTMENT) is beautiful. 119.00 a night, booked direct.
Full, very nice kitchen, living room, bedroom, large walk in shower, huge soaking tub in the bedroom. It is perfectly spotless. Crabtree and Evelyn bath products.
I love it here!
Unfortunately, I still hate Las Vegas. Noisy, smokey (tobacco and exhaust) and depressing IMO.
This hotel is pretty far from the best part of the strip but there is plenty of options to get there.
My previous 3 trips I stayed at the Venetian (WONDERFUL!) the Palms (I liked it. It has a easy shuttle to Caesar's Palace and LOADS to do right at the Palms) and the Flamingo, which was funky, in a bad way but convenient to everything.
I'll be posting all my photos of the Hilton GV on LVS tomorrow on Tripadvisor.
