Island Music?

Okay y'all, I'm looking for island music to download on my iPod.

I have enough Bob Marley and Jimmy Buffet.

What song makes you think of the summer, islands, beach, or pool?

Surfergirl Jun 16th, 2006 08:51 AM

The Beach Boys!!! Aruba, Jamaica ooo I wanna take you, Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama. . . . (Kokoma)

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 02:54 PM

I know there are other threads on this forum but I just can't find them.

AustinTraveler Jun 17th, 2006 03:00 PM

Hey GoTravel,

I recently downloaded Sinead O'Connors latest CD. It's got a reggae vibe to it. Check it out.

cmcfong Jun 17th, 2006 03:02 PM

UB40 Red,red wine...goes to my head....

BayouGal Jun 17th, 2006 03:05 PM

cmcfong Jun 17th, 2006 03:05 PM

Anything by Hapa makes me think of Hawaii, which makes me think of the beach, which makes me think of summer.

"It's Too Darn Hot" as sung by Ella Fitzgerald is a classic.

Do you like Cesaria Evora? She is from the Cape Verde Islands and her songs have a distinctly tropical feel to them.

Any of the Stan Getz/Joao Gilberto Bossa Nova albums from the 60s are fun for summer.

I'm not sure why, but the Indigo Girls always remind of summer for some reason.

That's all I'm good for right now.

IZ for Hawaiian music. The "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" that aired in the season ender of ER a few years ago is just magnificent.

cmcfong Jun 17th, 2006 03:20 PM

Jimmie Cliff!

BayouGal Jun 17th, 2006 03:28 PM

Surely you have Otis Redding's "Sittin on the Dock of the Bay?!"

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 03:38 PM

Thanks! Y'all are the best!

I have IZ OTR and Otis, both classics but I'm in more of a Calypso/Bossa Nova/Latin phase.

So far I have:

Suavecito - Malo
Banano Boat (Day-O)- Harry Belafonte
Jump In The Line - Harry Belafonte
Mambo #5 - Lou Bega
Livin' La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin
Latin Girls - Black Eyed Peas
Diamonds on the Soles of Her Shoes - Paul Simon

As you can see, I am all over the place!

cmcfong Jun 17th, 2006 03:39 PM

Love Harry Belafonte.

jayne1973 Jun 17th, 2006 03:40 PM

In the Summertime by Mungo Jerry

seetheworld Jun 17th, 2006 03:41 PM

Sheryl Crow...what's the name of that song??? BRAINFREEZE!

jayne1973 Jun 17th, 2006 03:42 PM

...and Boys of Summer by the Eagles
Sunset Grill (Don Henley?)

BayouGal Jun 17th, 2006 03:50 PM

In that case, GoTravel, try Raul DeBlasio. I have his Piano de America, Vol. 2, CD and love it. You can listen to sound bites on amazon.com If downloading, I think you'd like Delicado-Tico Tico, Detalles-El Gato Que Esta Triste Y Azul, and Malaguena from that CD.

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 04:11 PM

THAT'S IT! I'm downloading Detalles / El Gato Que Esta Triste y Azul by Raúl Di Blasio Piano de América 2 right now!

I guess I'm in a bit of Latin mode.

Anyone familiar with African music?

gracieb Jun 17th, 2006 04:13 PM

Well, VERY alternative, but you asked for African -

For African music, try Orchestra Baobob. They are specatular. I'm bringing them with me to St. John tonight.

-Bill

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 04:45 PM

Any particular songs? I'm right behind you, Tortola week after next.

iamq Jun 17th, 2006 04:53 PM

Anything off the "Bamba" cd is tasty. Track number one, Mouhamadou Bamba is my favorite. Tortola, eh? Have a great trip.

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 04:55 PM

You must be a surfer!

Thanks for the music lead!

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 04:57 PM

I'm not getting anything on iTunes for the Orchestra Baobob, the album Bamba, or the song. Any ideas?

AustinTraveler Jun 17th, 2006 05:00 PM

GoTravel, not sure if you saw my earlier recommendation of Sinead O'Connor, but if you like surf music you have to download some AquaVelvets. They are awesome!!

iamq Jun 17th, 2006 05:02 PM

I was just looking through my ipod playlists and came across "Hot Love in Summertime", by Sly and the Family Stone. Hot fun, indeed!

-Bill

mah1980 Jun 17th, 2006 05:03 PM

James Taylor and Barenaked Ladies would be good island music.

iamq Jun 17th, 2006 05:11 PM

GoT,
Sorry, I did not see your other post. Yep, they're not there. I spelled it wrong, it is baobab, anyway, you're right it's not on i-tunes. I could send you my cd!

It's not African, but how about the Buena Vista Social Club?
-Bill

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 05:16 PM

Dang! I was all excited about Orchestra Baobab!

Sly and the family are de rigueur in South Carolina being the Shag is our official dance.

Love BNL!

iamq Jun 17th, 2006 05:18 PM

Yikes. I just found an Orchestra Baobab album on i-tunes. I googled orchestra baobab, followed a link to i-tunes and there it was!

http://www.google.com/musica?aid=HTp...&ct=result

I don't know why I couldn't find it by searching on i-tunes. Strange. I'm not familiar with this album, apparently it is a "reunion" album. Sounds good!

caribtraveler Jun 17th, 2006 05:20 PM

'Hugh Masekela' for some incredible African Jazz.
'Kassav' for fantastic caribbean music.

GoTravel Jun 17th, 2006 05:35 PM

You are the bomb imq! Downloading now!

BayouGal Jun 17th, 2006 05:37 PM

You still here, Bill? I thought you'd be off the airport by now.

laartista Jun 17th, 2006 05:48 PM

What about some Crowded House or Buffalo Tom.

Surfergirl Jun 17th, 2006 05:52 PM

I was going to say Margaritaville, but see you already have Jimmy Buffet on the radar.

MelissaHI Jun 18th, 2006 04:33 AM

Initially I thought of Lisa Ono's 'Bossa Carioca' CD for that vibe....you may also want to check out Hawaii jazz artist Ginai (one name). She just came out with a jazz cd that blends some well-known Hawaiian songs with a jazz beat/sound.
