I thought this forum needed to hear from someone who actually lives in Wichita and loves it. I have travelled all over the US and the world. I always love to come home to Wichita where people are nice and polite. The streets are clean and there is always something to do, ie theater, museums, symphony etc. I have just returned from New Orleans and hated the filth, the rude people and sky high prices. There ARE middle class people in Wichita, and there are plenty of quality subdivisions for us that make my 20 minute commute the envy of all my friends in bigger cities. I can't believe the people on this forum who are bashing Wichita and don't even live here. Wichita is very safe, it just has unfortunate incidents (isolated) that happen in every other town in the US. The murders happened in my area of Wichita, and I felt safe before they happened and I still feel safe. Please research the facts on Wichita before making a decision based on the posts on this board. They are not an accurate depiction of life in Wichita. Also, compare your findings with any other town in the US and I venture to say that Wichita would hold its own.

I live in Kansas City, about three hours from Wichita, and I agree with the poster about living in the suburbs, not the actual city. Yes, I have heard reports of crime in Wichita and have wondered what the heck is going on. Wichita is not that big a place and usually it's the bigger cities you hear of more crime in.

BUT, if you just went by what you heard on the news you might be afraid of the Kansas City crime rate, too. Yet I live in a suburb of Kansas City where the biggest crime I've heard of lately is that my son's bike was stolen out of his friend's yard and my local police department took a report and has called me twice asking for more information and even took a bike they found to my son's school to see if it might be his. They devote so much time to a stolen bike because there are no murders or other big crimes. We are quite safe here. And you would be just as safe in a suburb of Wichita, I'm sure.
