Is Makeup Permitted in a Carryon?? TSA Website Not Precise Enough
Help! Has anyone gone through security lately with any of these items? Tube of lipstick, creamy foundation and rouge, mascara, creamy concealer, eyeshadow? I have a extremely quick daytrip I have to make tomorrow to film a video (no, I'm not famous!) I am just taking my purse, no luggage whatsover. How in the world do I tell if any of this is prohibited, and what in the world can I do if any of it is?? The TSA website does not specifically say no lipstick - it says, "No liquid lipgloss;" "liquid foundation" is forbidden, but mine is in a very small tube and it's creamy. I am not in the mood to get there with everything and have to throw any of it out! For goodness sake, they'll let me wear a "gel bra," but I can't have a gram of concealer? I have to be able to put fresh makeup on when I get to my destination and I'm on an extremely tight schedule when I land - I'm only on the ground about two hours, so no time to shop when I get there.
Is this a dilemma or what! Please advise on anyone's recent experience! |
If you can squeeze it, the answer is "no". Mascara - no. CREAMy foundation? no. CREAMy rouge. no.
<What in the world can you do?> Pack dry cosmetics in your carryon - or be willing to toss them. Lipstick tube (regular) is okay. "No liquid lipgloss" means NO LIQUID lipgloss. The argument that it is just a small amount won't help you any. If it's liquid - no. |
You cannot carry liquid makeup or lipgloss on the plane--no lotions, no toothpaste.
I flew the first day of the ban and it was a mess. I have flown twice since and have not had any delays through security. |
My MIL flew just recently and forgot she had mascara and creamy foundation/coverup in her purse (its a huge purse, lol) and she had to toss them ( I do not think she had the option to put them in her checked luggage as it had already gone through).
|
I flew right after the restrictions were set in place. Basically couldn't bring on any cosmetics in liquid form, i.e., anything that moves. So moisturizer - prohibited. Lip blam in solid form in a pot - allowed. Solid concealers and lipsticks (the ones that come in a pot) should be okay to bring on.
|
I saw an article in the paper just a few days ago about how the airline flight attendants can't travel with any makeup either. Since they don't check bags, but only do carry on, they are mainly going without mascara, eyeshadow, etc.
|
I had my mascara confiscated a few days ago on a flight from Amsterdam to JFK.
|
I'm getting out the white flag... the terrorists have won. I'll bet Max Factor and Clinique are making as much money these days as Halliburton!
|
I went through airport security today in LA--chapstick (in a tube)is fine--carmex (in a pot)is not. Basically anything that could remotely be called a liquid is not allowed.
|
Well at least we will all have an excuse to look like death warmed over when we arrive at our destination!
|
I just think the whole ban on liquid and makeup is silly. if a terrorist wants moisture he can get it from the FAs due to them having liquids in the form of drinks.
|
My chopstick was confiscated from me in Charlotte NC two weeks ago. You wrote "I have a extremely quick daytrip I have to make tomorrow."
Why do you need all this stuff for a extremely quick day trip anyway? |
Stephanie, I do not think liquids by nature of their form are dangerous - to anyone other than Elphaba perhaps.
I believe the ban against liquids is to keep terrorists from bringing bomb components (in liquid form) onto the plane. The liquid form of mascara is not dangerous. What is dangerous is someone bringing in a bomb component that APPEARS to be "just mascara". I truly don't believe it's a case of "Beware the 7up!" |
Mama, you sound quite dangerous with those chopsticks! :-)
Good catch, mama. OP is not even spending the night. |
Was about to post similar reply Starrsville...but you said it better!!!
|
Thanks for all the input. I am so screwed. The reason I need my stuff in my carryon is that I'm sure you all know that you can't put full makeup on at 7:00 am and have it look fresh at 3:00 pm, particularly after traveling, if you're going to be photographed, up close! My druthers would be to wear next to no makeup and apply it when I get there. If I were staying overnight, the point would be moot - I'd check my bag and no problems. My main problem is I have no time on the ground, even to wait for a checked bag (I can just see my tiny cosmetic bag going round and round all by itself on the luggage carousel!) Honestly, I am not a diva whatsover in the makeup department on a normal basis - a little mascara and lipstick and I'm good to go for the day. But really, if you were being video'd for an hour, wouldn't you want a fresh coat before they began?
The most annoying aspect is the rules are vague and inconsistent with the TSA and their power unlimited. For instance, KY Jelly is allowed on board. That is much more liquidy than mascara. (Is the lobby for the Mile High Club more powerful than Cover Girl's??) I found a tiny sample mascara tube in my bathroom. I'm putting it in my bra. Let 'em send me to Guantanamo! |
I have a good friend who has been going on E-bay and bidding on sample lots of makeup so she can take them traveling. She swears by it and has never had a problem. Its worth a look.
|
Does this mean we have a new way of profiling terrorists - they will be the ones wearing makeup?
|
TSA does not grasp the fact that there are various kinds of cosmetics. They don't "get it" that a comprehensive list, i.e. naming kinds/brands/etc. would be ideal.
All I can gather is that tube lipstick is ok, compact powder & blusher are ok, eyebrow pencil is ok, but mascara or anything liquid or jell is not. I never figured my mascara was liquid ... what is actually in those tubes ?? :-) I got this info from SW Airlines. A friend just flew within the US and she was able to take all these items. A lip pencil is OK too from what I hear. I guess the only way you find out is to get to security with the stuff and see if they allow it. OF course by that time your checked luggage is gone. |
My husband and I changed planes in DFW yesterday (after arriving from JFK).
While boarding the plane, I walked on with an opened water bottle that I had absentmindedly put in my bag of breakfast. I noticed it after we were seated, but did not drink it for fear of being spotted by a FA. |
Get cake mascara and other powdered forms of your makeup.
You can take a full makeup bag - just mostly new (to you) products. |
Is there a makeup artist involved with this shoot? Maybe she/he could provide what you need. Or if you need special brands, could you call ahead and make arrangements with the video company? These seem like special circumstances, so maybe they'd be willing to help you out.

Or stop at a CVS, Eckerd's, Walgreens or grocery store and just buy the stuff you really want and can't carry on.
Buy the NYC brand - inexpensive. I've done this twice already. Just toss afterwards. I can't believe there won't be one of the above between the airport and the shoot. Another option - FedEx a package of your cosmetics to a person involved in the shoot (cheaper for me to buy and toss, but if you have more expensive taste in cosmetics.) |
I would take one of the above suggestions before I would try to hide something on my person. I am sure its been tried before and I would bet they keep an eye out for that sort of thing.
Again for future reference check e-bay for sample lots. I just looked and found them for just about everything. |
I think the smartest & easiest would be to pack a bag and check it thru. It normally doesn't take more than 20 mins. for baggage to come in off a plane.
BTW I'd hush up about that bra of yours ;-) |
Those of you who took on the non liquid form of make-up what were the EXACT brands?
For instance I wonder if I can take on Burts Bees lip balm in the stick. It's colored. Could I? |
canterbury that's a good point about the water...something similar happened to us.... on the flight back from Vegas we bought bottled water at Starbucks near the gate. This was after the security check and everything, and we walked right onto the plane with it. We were 1/2 way thru the flight before a flight attendant noticed and took it away. There is no security check for what you carry on the plane once you're at the gate, and we thought it was OK to bring something on the plane that you purchased from the gate, but apparently not. And it occurred to me that there was a Crabtree & Evelyn store (after security check) that I almost bought some bath gel in but decided not to. I guess that would have been taken away if I had, but who would have known if I'd put it in my bag? The whole liquid check process seems a little "off" to me. If you can't bring it on the plane, they shouldn't sell it past the security check point unless they plan on scanning your carry-ons again.

tube lipstick is OK

To me this entire discussion and the reason behind it is missing the point. To inconvenience ALL travelers like they're doing so they can be politically correct, appeasing the idiot liberals (who are so opposed to the "evil" of profiling)when instead they should be looking for terrorists - not checking makeup in housewive's and grandma's carry-on. ALL of these attacks and attempts to attack have been committed by young, middle-eastern males, NONE have been committed by housewives or grandmas - but heaven forbid we check for THEM instead of worrying whether Susie and Mary Jane are carrying a dreaded liquid lipgloss on the plane!!
This is why we will NEVER win the war on terror - we don't have the ba_ _s to fight it in anyway that actually makes sense. |
Well, my, my, my.
bashful is not so bashful. Whether or not bashful's comments are accurate, I do believe housewives and grannys are willing to do what they can to help the process. Is it all ridiculous? Maybe. So are so many things I see on a daily basis - but to keep this travel related and not political, I'll stop there. OP can abide by present regulations or have her makeup tossed. |
"ALL of these attacks and attempts to attack have been committed by young, middle-eastern males, NONE have been committed by housewives or grandmas"
This is a really, really ignorant and stupid comment, Bashful. Apparently you don't watch much news - haven't you heard of the Chechen rebels with their female suicide bombers? If TSA decides to ignore "housewives and grandmas" as you suggest, guess who will be recruited and trained for the next terrorist attack? |
Have you ever seen the HBO show "Curb Your Enthusiasm"..... whenever Larry David is questioning whether someone is telling him the truth he stares at them in the eyes and tilts his head baacck and fooorth very slowly......
we had a moment like this with the flight attendant when she took our water away (she playing the Larry David part of course)... and the moment ended with her saying "you just never know what a terrorist looks like these days" |
From a former high maintenace gal(I now live the life of an wood sprite, gardening in nothing more than my Crocs)..
((Y)) those handy all-in-one compacts(powder foundation, blush, eye makeup) and moistened makeup cloths(Body Shop vitamin E brand) were not cruelly taken away on my return flight this summer(right after the changes for allowables).. J. |
Tell us more about the moistened cloths from Body Shop. I can substitute okay items for just about all my stuff but haven't figured out how to wash my face since I usually use Cetaphil lotion.
|
What about Daily Facials from Oil of Olay? The facial cleanser is actitvated once you add water tot he cloth.
|
SharonG~ they come in a soft pink pack, opening on top with a seal for closure(self stick).. they smell divine.. I also use the lotion cleanser and hydration spray.. smells faintly like roses.
What I like is they hydrate, cleanse and make a nice hand freshener. Lots of Body shops in airports now. Anyway, no need to add anything like water. :)Hope it works for you, J. |
Thanks Jetset1. I may be able to "carry on" once again.
|
How about contact solution in the case? I'm sure I can't take my travel size solution, but can I even have the solution in the contact case?
I will be so screwed if not...flying from the U.S. to Egypt and will definitely want to take them out at some point! |
That's a good idea Lizzie!

Regarding "There is no security check for what you carry on the plane once you're at the gate":
Don't count on that. I flew the first day of the new ban and they had a guy at the gate checking the same passengers and the same bags all over again. The ban is not evenly enforced. We watched with parched throats as an off duty flight attendant boarded the plane with a huge bottle of water. Special strokes for special folks, I guess. I agree that Bra Lady is asking for trouble by trying to sneak something on. Her name will go in a special list and every single time she flies, they will be pulling her aside for "special screening." |
