I am SO SICK of posting problems
This has been going on for weeks. In previous threads it appears the problem is with AOL not Fodors. It was bad enough when you had to press reload then retry-but eventually got your message posted. For the last week or so, a new problem-you press post & the message just disappears into thin air!
I'd love to hear from anyone who's NOT on AOL but having problems. Also wondering if all us AOL people should move en mass to another server. Suggestions for dial up, easy server? |
I'm on AOL and have no trouble getting messages posted - they turn up right away. What version are you using? Do you need an update?
|
I find the problem you are describing to be independent of ISP (e.g. AOL), but instead to be browser related; for example Internet Explorer shows this kind of problem with me while Netscape does not and works better. Others here have previously suggested doing a "cache clean up" to avoid the problem, but I don't recall the specifics on how to do it :?
|
Mclaurie, I used to be on AOL and had lots of problems here. But I'm now on Earthlink DSL and never seem to have any problems at all. But during my month in New York I set up one of those free accounts with AOL and posting here became a nightmare again.
|
I have had problems posting for quite a while.
It seems to be when logged in to my work server... as soon as I log into my personal isp the problem is gone. I use the same computer and Internet Explorer on both connections... so in my case it appears to be related to where I am connected, though NOT related to HOW I am connected. It is very frustrating though... |
We used to have AOL, but switched due to problems - not the particular problem you are having though. We have SBC Yahoo DSL and are happy.
|
I'm in the same boat and AOL has never entered into it. I have not changed or updated my browser or OS but about two weeks ago was suddenly unable to post from work but posting from home works just fine (on dial up).
I emailed Fodors about it but got two separate non-answers. I'm active in several other discussion forums and the problem is limited to Fodor's. |
This ost (the previous one) finally worked, apparently due to removing my cache files. To do this go to Tools on the browser toolbar menu, choose Internet Options and then from the center of the dialogue box look for the section called "Temporary Internet Files". Choose "Delete Files" be sure to check the box that says "include offline content" then click OK. If your cache is as loaded as mine it may take about five minutes to clear but then things appear to be okay with Fodor's (at least for awhile).
|
To avoid the posting problem with AOL, log onto this site with the simpler
fodors.com rather than www.fodors.com I don't know why, but it will eliminate your non-posting problems |
Thanks for all your replies. Yes, I should update my version of AOL. My problem is my computer's old & I've got limited memory-not enough to download a new version without first uninstalling old version. Because of this memory problem, I do constantly delete temporary internet files. And yes, if I have a big problem posting, I re-enter the Fodors website from Fodors.com home page.
However, I'm convinced it's an AOL or possibly Fodors or AOL/Fodors problem because I have had the same problem on 2 different computers in 2 different cities. The only common points between the 2 experiences were AOL dial up (2 different versions) & my screen name. If I attempt to post from a "mclaurie" forum (ie click my screen name for previous threads) the post just disappears. Otherwise, I have to click "reload" & then retry in order to post. Any more thoughts, particularly about internet servers. |
Just a humorous addendum, that last post went through with no problem-the first time in days. Just shows to go ya.
|
I have had horrible problems posting today. I tried to reply to another thread about 20 times before giving up.
I have never been on AOL. I'll be surprised if this makes it... |
OMG!!! I took the www out of the url and it actually worked... at least for now!
Yippee! |
I have AOL. After cleaning my cookies and rebooting, I have never had a problem.
|
I don't have AOL. After clearing my cache and posting the two replies that show in this thread.... I tried to respond to a different thread and I'm right back to the same problem. I gave Fodors all the info they requested about my browser version etc but still no reply and the problem remains when I post from work (yet I can post at home on dial up with no problem).
|
Try removing the www ... it seems to have helped my problem.
Never know! |
Many thanks to OwenONeill, =D> your cache clean up protocol works for me. :S-
|
Removing cookies worked for me. Note that this also removes all your stored log-ins and saved passwords for your favorite websites.
In the alternative, with AOL, just launch Internet Explorer and go to Fodors. No problems posting messages. |
I have same problem I can not post NEW messages (it never completes - I have let is sit for hours and never finishes) BUT I can post replies as is obvious. Go figure. Pretty much sucks.
|
OK, I'll show my stupidity. Is a cookie the same as my list of "favorite places" on AOL? If not,how do I remove cookies?
|
BTW, things seem to be working fine again today but I'm curious about the cookie issue.
|
I had the same problem but don't have AOL. When that message seems to "disappear" I hit the refresh button and the message finally posted.
Another thing I found is that I had to double click the "post my reply" button in order for it to work. I also use IE. |
I've never used AOL. I occasionally have this problem with IE. Then I either switch to Netscape or use a proxy and the problem is solved.

To clean your cookies, click on "start" then click on "run" then type in"cookies" then highlight all except "index" (move it out of your way) after highlighting the others hit "delete". Turn your computer off and reboot. Worked for me. |
The saga continues. After less than 24 hrs of OK posting, my problems started again. By the way, I figured out the disappearing posts happen because when I click my screen name to see posts I've participated in, the URL automatically changes to www, even though my bookmark is without www-
cd I tried following your instructions for deleting cookies. After typing cookies & clicking ok, I get a window that's filled to overflowing with lists of, I guess every website I've ever visited :)). There's nothing that says "index" to move. I tried highlighting it all & then clicked on edit & then "select all". I have no option for "delete"-just cut, copy or paste. I clicked cut but that didn't work. Sorry if I'm being dense. Can anyone help? I have a feeling this could really solve my problems as I think it's taking up most of the memory in my computer! |
If you running IE you can Delete cookies by hitting "Tools" at the top of your browser.
Then hit"Internet Options" and there is a button that says "delete cookies" |
I would also suggest dumping AOL.
I had problems with them for a while and they kept blaming my computer. I left them and went to a local Dial-up and waddayaknow....problem solved. You might also check out a freeware program called Lavasoft Adaware 6 it is a small file to download but it scans your files and finds unwanted programs on your computer. It might just be a hidden file you picked up somewhere. BTW you would most likely save money by switching ISP's. |
Yes I'm anxious to find an alternate IS but which one??
Panhandle, I don't normally run IE, I use AOL but I closed AOL, went to IE, clicked tools then internet options & I get a box that has no delete cookies option. Am I crazy? It has history information & I keep clicking delete history but it's not removing these cookies. Any other thoughts anyone? |
mclaurie, you may have to delete the files one at a time.
When you highlite the file, use the delete button on your keyboard. Did you go the The Church Mouse in Palm Beach? I'm thinking about going to South Florida this weekend. |
mclaurie
After highlighting your cookies, just hit delete on your keyboard. Then remember to reboot. |
No one is listening to me but I have not had even one delay since I took the www out of the url. I have no clue why it works but it totally fixed it for me.
|
mclaurie is not exaggerating. I rarely post here because of that. I'm about to switch.
|
Mclaurie try to avoid larger ISP's
like earthlink...I had the same problem with them. I would either use cable or Dsl if available. If not look up internet in your phonebook and go with a local company. My service was much faster locally. I have now since switched to cable and LOVE it. BTW my computer that I use for surfing is likely as old as yours is. Your computer should be more than capable of net use. Try this for your cookies...Click start" then "programs" then find the program "windows explorer" then scroll down to where it says "windows" click on it and you will find a cookies folder. Click it and you will find all the little cookies on your computer... after you find the folder (which you can also use find files or folders like and earlier post said) click "edit" on the top of your screen. Then.."select all" they will all be highlighted. After your highlight them click "file" then "delete" Good luck! |
Sooooo, all you good people. I'd written a long post saying got some of my cookies deleted, things were running fine this morning & when I went to post it pffft-gone. And THEN - no fodors acces for like an hour. Will test this before continuing.
|
My message always disappears... but just hit the refresh button and it will post. Well, that's what works for me anyway.
|
OK so things are working again. I won't bore you with all this. Just wanted to thank cd & others for help on deleting cookies (press delete, duh). I clearly have some computer problems in addition to internet problems. I panicked that I had in fact deleted a cookie I needed when things weren't working at all. Thank goodness the cookie deletion stopped before removing that "index" file cd mentioned.
TxTravelPro (and Howard) I'm not ignoring your www point. The problem is when I go to "mclaurie" posts, the computer automatically turns the URL into www. GoTravel, we DID go to Church Mouse. I had written a mini report but it was one of the disappearing posts. I didn't find anything for myself (most of the good women's stuff was formal attire apart from a few great Bill Blass outfits that were size 4!) BUT DH who DETESTS shopping found a few things including a terrific navy double breasted blazer (which he doesn't need because he already has 2) which he couldn't resist. We didn't do the trail walk because it was too darn hot. A |
Well, whaddaya know. Didn't have to hit refresh. I think fodors fixed it. (Knock wood) for now anyway. Maybe they deleted their cookied. ;-)
|
They say misery loves company and for what it's worth, you are not alone experiencing Fodors access problems today :?
|
I tried to make a post this am...around 8ish and got knocked off of Fodors completely. This is the first problem I have had in a while. So JohnD, I guess misery does love company!!
