Utahtea - One of the best meals I've ever had was in Wyoming, on the side of some secondary highway. We were on a road trip in the car and had lunch fixings in an ice chest in the trunk as we often do on road trips. We saw a road marker for the Overland Trail and decided to stop. It was about lunch time, so we brought our picnic stuff out, walked about 50 yards down the wagon ruts until we could no longer see the car, and made our picnic there. It was wonderful - the wagon ruts stretching out in front of us, grasslands for miles, mountains in the background, a blue sky with a few white clouds, and not a living soul around.

This thread did remind me that the most we ever did pay for a hotel was in London. The Rubens.

Around $250 a night US but you couldn't beat the location...right on Buckingham Palace Drive.

Very nice room and great, friendly service. And they all spoke English, too! :-D

It's interesting everyone is responding to the question with the *most* money they are willing to spend.

I'm curious as to the least (i.e., what is the cheapest hotel room you are willing to stay in?).

I only sleep in a hotel room -- and I always have my dog with me. So? So the less the better, and I've found acceptable (clean shower, door locks that work, no pulled out receptacles, air conditioning that is reasonably quiet, no drugs or prostitutes) rooms for $30-35 or so. But that's in the south -- and they're motels where I stay on a regular basis so I know them, and they know me (and the dog).

If I'm on vacation, I may up that a bit (if no dog, I have more choices) but hotels are not a priority, so the least I can get away with. In my budget, I'll spend less on rooms to eat better. I'd rather remember the meals and the experiences, not the hotel.
