How do people "mark" their luggage?

I used to have hard plastic luggage and I threw on a couple stickers to differentiate my luggage from similar others (to identify it quickly in baggage claim). Now I have soft canvas luggage and I'm curious how others "mark" their luggage as theirs. Stickers won't stick to it and I'd like to avoid using a big red bow :)

You can buy luggage straps in different colors & designs at luggage stores, Conatiner Store. But alot of people use a strip of colored duct tape.

How about a belt?

Or an unusual tag?

I got some wonderful Hawaiian stencils, gold fabric paint, and stenciled my very-non-descript bags.

Now I can spot them on the airport luggage carousels with ease! 8-)

happytrailstoyou Jun 3rd, 2007 11:29 AM

I fasten brightly colored key rings I've received as promotions to the handles of my suitcases. It works great.

tekwriter Jun 3rd, 2007 11:39 AM

I use a multi-colored, large fabric ribbon tied in a bow around the handle of my bag - I never have a problem spying it on the carousel. A cheap scarf would work well too, just make sure it's knotted securely.

barbiedollsarelovely Jun 3rd, 2007 11:45 AM

I have tied the same brightly colored ribbons on all of our suitcases. There are lots and lots of ribbons on them.

thurstonbb Jun 3rd, 2007 11:51 AM

I have luggage straps bought at a luggage store. They fasten by velcro and can really be seen. I have a variety of them, all blue and green, some striped.

Orlando_Vic Jun 3rd, 2007 12:03 PM

I use a brightly colored, locking (TSA approved lock) luggage strap.

polaris Jun 3rd, 2007 12:06 PM

two bright yellow tape "stripes" on each handle of the suitcase. Lasts for a long time, too.

TAW Jun 3rd, 2007 12:57 PM

I bought multi-colored curly ribbon bows in the gift wrap dept. of local drug store and tied them on my luggage. Get lots of comments re: how easy to spot/great idea, etc.

ellenem Jun 3rd, 2007 01:05 PM

My friend used a white marker to draw polka dots all over her standard black rollercase.

coldwar27 Jun 3rd, 2007 01:30 PM

I use a Univ of Florida Gator ribbon and tie it on my suitcase.

GerdaFaust Jun 3rd, 2007 02:10 PM

I attach a large bell to the handle... that way, if someone tries to make off with it, I can hear it!

seetheworld Jun 3rd, 2007 02:23 PM

I use my neon Fodor's luggage tags!! :D

crefloors Jun 3rd, 2007 02:47 PM

I thought of "lifting my leg" when I first read the title, but actually I have a piece of green ribbon tied to the handle.

A_Traveller Jun 3rd, 2007 02:50 PM

I use strips of colored electrical tape on a couple of the hard surfaces (near the wheels, handle, by the reinforced cornors, etc.) of my luggage. It's inexpensive, effective and easy to spot.

starrsville Jun 3rd, 2007 03:40 PM

I put a favorite photo (usually a pup) and a business card or my contact info back to back and have it laminated into a luggage tag. Kinko's, the UPS store (and some hotel lobbys do it for their guests) and I have a unique luggage tag.

No one has walked off with one of my pups yet :-)

karens Jun 3rd, 2007 03:50 PM

I used tape on our old suitcases to create a large "S" on both sides. After being through a few plane flights, it started to look pretty trashy. But we always knew which black suitcases were ours!

cmcfong Jun 3rd, 2007 04:39 PM

I recieved dog bone luggage tags as a gift. There is a small plastic window for a photo of a pup. Instantly recognizable!

SamH Jun 3rd, 2007 04:57 PM

I dont do anything. My black canvas bag is just as it came from the store. Only one like it on the carousel.

sandmann Jun 3rd, 2007 05:10 PM

My old, battered Lark bag is easy to pick out in sea of black.

cigalechanta Jun 3rd, 2007 05:17 PM

I stuck on glow stars but after two seasons they fell off, now back to ribbons!!

xrae Jun 3rd, 2007 05:55 PM

First, I have a blue suitcase. Hard to believe how many people have black. We didn't specifically pick blue for any reason, but we're glad to have it. And we have some unique luggage tags on them, almost guaranteed that nobody else will have them.

Target and Wal-Mart have pretty good travel aisles for luggage tags, etc., if you don't have any fancy specialty stores around.

starrsville Jun 3rd, 2007 06:02 PM

xrae, mine is blue too. I bought a monogrammed bag from LLBean and it's a lot easier to find it on the carousel. My "big" bag is a green tapestry. When I buy cheap duffles or other bags I always buy a color. This last trip I was the only one with a turquoise bag on the carousel. It was cheap from Target and bought it to carry product to a conference. Was ready to leave it behind in case it got banged up, but it handled it's heavy contents very well.

Go for a color - any color other than black! :-)

suze Jun 3rd, 2007 07:01 PM

I have a small dark green suitcase, with a Hawaiian print luggage tag.

TxTravelPro Jun 3rd, 2007 08:02 PM

I have never seen a suitcase like mine on the belt but I have marked other items with a favorite patch... there are THOUSANDS on eBay.
Use Gorilla glue sparingly brush a very thin coat on the patch and place it on the suitcase. You have one shot to get it where you want it, so don't mess up.
Let it sit for 24 hours.
It will NEVER peel or come off.
Put it on the same side as the handle, in the front, whatever.
I would not suggest using anything that may single your luggage out as a target on international flights... I love my khaki American flag on my khaki backpack, but I would not use it overseas. Do others agree with that? My company does not want us to have any visible 'information' on luggage when traveling internationally.

I am too paranoid to use straps because they get caught on things, like loading ramps and in the cargo hold.

suze Jun 3rd, 2007 08:34 PM

It doesn't have to be big or flashy. Any little thing that YOU know to look for. A thin piece or rope, string or ribbon tied thru the handle or a specific luggage tag that you can spot.

rkkwan Jun 3rd, 2007 08:44 PM

I send my dog... ;)

[Actually, I don't even have a dog.]

Ag3046 Jun 4th, 2007 08:44 AM

Good grief- if you buy something other than a basic black bag with wheels, it will stand out on the luggage carousel. I have great luggage from a reputable national company in bright green pattern - unmistakeable. I pity those of you with black bags.

gmoney Jun 4th, 2007 08:54 AM

I bought a bright red set of luggage and its unreal how easy it is to spot. I also put a sturdy unique luggage tag just in case. I cannot believe how many people have black luggage that gets lost in a sea of black bags on the carousel. You can spot a red bag a mile away.

TC Jun 4th, 2007 08:58 AM

I printed a photo of my two grandchildren with the words <b>&quot; If You're Not My Grandma, Don't Even Think of Taking This Luggage&quot;</b> on the other side and laminated the two into a large tag to attach to the handle.

hester Jun 5th, 2007 06:41 PM

We have bright orange halloween fabric ribbon with black cats on it tied on our handles. All our luggage have the same fabric ribbon, it really makes it easy for us to spot our luggage.

escargot Jun 5th, 2007 07:10 PM

I confess, we are among the millions of travelers with all black luggage - all four in our family - but never have trouble spotting ours on the belt -we each have a colorful round luggage tag and some ribbon - we can spot ours the second it comes within view on the belt

NewbE Jun 5th, 2007 07:49 PM

I have all black suitcases and good eyesight. No unusual markings, just a basic luggage tag. I don't see what the big deal is, and I pity all the tatty tape and stickers I see on the carousel. I like the idea of the permanently glued on patch as a more tasteful alternative.

toedtoes Jun 5th, 2007 08:35 PM

The last time I used my black luggage, I attached a big bright colored luggage tag to it.

When I waited at the carousel waiting, my luggage tag never showed up. It had broken or fallen off at some point during the trip. I ended up having to search through the sea.

Now I have tapestry luggage and it's so easy. Even if there is another tapestry bag on the carousel, it will be in a different color scheme or pattern. No problem anymore.

bashawdi Jun 5th, 2007 08:42 PM

I use two different colors of gift wrapping ribbon on my bag and flair them like a package. I spot my bag easily every time.

I do a similar thing with my hubby and my son's bag, but I use one simple color for their bags.

fishee Jun 5th, 2007 09:38 PM

yellow flyertalk.com luggage tag...

mireaux7 Jun 5th, 2007 10:00 PM

i mark my luggage by affixing a large map of the united states on it and taking a permanent marker to mark my destination.

that way, when the clerk at the airline ticketing desk asks me where i want to fly to, i simply hold up my suitcase and point to the map and say &quot;right there!, right friggin there!&quot;

cjbryant Jun 5th, 2007 10:19 PM

me too, fishee!

Those big ole' FT tags really stand out.
