Dave,I would recommend the Andrews Hotel. We stayed there for 3 nights just a couple of weeks ago and it's great value. It's just 2 blocks off Union Sq so it's very convenient for sightseeing and restaurants/bars and shopping. It's a boutique style hotel with pretty and comfortable, but some rather small, rooms. We paid £99/night with a delicious breakfast of pastries, rolls, muffins, orange juice etc. included in the price, and it's served just outside your room. There is also a complimentary glass of wine every evening.
I would definately stay there again!
I found this website very helpful in selecting a hotel in SF:http://www.hotelres.com/
and this is the site for Andrews Hotel:
http://www.andrewshotel.com/

maybe that $80-120 should go for a basic spelling class...

Good grief - so now, typos are a capital offense! Sigh.

The Chancellor Hotel might be in your price range. It's on Union Square, older hotel..but well kept. We liked it.

go to priceline.com, request a four star hotel for $90 bucks. It works, it's great!!!
