Here comes the snow??!!

So,it's apparently going to snow a little out here in WA/OR. I spent half the day at work cracking up at the panic in everyone's voice! And watching the bread and milk fly off of the Costco shelves! The news channels are just as funny. Talking about 2 inches in one breath and road closures&emergency snow survival supplies in your car in the next! Guess driving on NJ my whole life has me prepared for anything. I'm pretty sure I'll be one of 3 people that don't call out tomorrow! Then again, I'd rather everyone who's afraid of driving in bad weather stay home anyway so they don't crash into me!

Scarlett Nov 30th, 2005 06:21 PM

Ooooh I hope it snows! :D
Our first winter/Christmas in Portland, how fun if it snows!
I remember the year we had , what was it, 17? snow storms in NY...in the late 90s..this will be nuthin :)
Bring it on LOL

J_Correa Nov 30th, 2005 06:24 PM

I'd stay home if it snowed.

klr6773 Nov 30th, 2005 06:42 PM

My only concern driving from Battle Ground to Hillsborough is that hill going up Rt26 at the Zoo!
My little daughter wants snow really badly! Her Uncle filled up his truck bed with snow two weeks ago when he went hunting on St Helen's and she was the only kid in town with a mound of snow on the front yard!Talk about jealous kids walking by!
so ,for you and for her, Scarlett,I will allow the snow to come ;)

Scarlett Nov 30th, 2005 07:24 PM

I will do what I did in NY and bake cookies ..
Here in town in the Pearl District, we are having First Thursday so snow might add to the charm. I am afraid it will probably turn into rain and ruin things..
Stay safe!

Gardyloo Dec 1st, 2005 05:34 AM

Our first winter/Christmas in Portland, how fun if it snows!

And how much fun when it's a silver thaw.

=-O

Fodorite018 Dec 1st, 2005 05:43 AM

LOL, yes, quite a few people here freak when that four letter "S" word is spoken:D

I agree, I would rather people stay home if they are not comfortable driving in snow.

As it turned out...no snow here:( Our kids were so disappointed. They were hoping to get a fun day and delay their finals.

JJ5 Dec 1st, 2005 06:52 AM

We have a couple of inches on the ground in the last hour. The timing was such that the traffic to work this morning was much delayed. But we hardly mention it here in Northern IL. We listen to traffic helicopter reports and proceed thusly. There isn't any hub-bub until it gets over about 7 inches, except on the weather portions of the early morning shows where they almost make every storm into the "big" one. But today was bad because of the timing; it started about 1-1/2 hours before rush hour started with a nice icy slick.

It's beautiful and really looks like Christmas today. My campus is breathtaking anyway- but with the decorated trees etc. and everything tipped in white- wish I could send you all some cheer. I'll make myself a cappaccino later and go drink it on the portico with the big flakes coming down.

We have no emergency days until it gets over a foot or the temps go down to below zero for over 48 hrs.

We slide all over here too, but just learn to drive in it. You do drive differently.

Or you stay home and enjoy the day.

It's only the Feb. gray ones that last days and are mostly slush that are the most resented. By then you want another change.

jorr Dec 1st, 2005 09:18 AM

OR, WA, and NJ? That's winter for beginners 101 ! Anyone experienced 50 below zero? A local Fargo TV station aired a press broadcast from NYC a few years ago where Mayor Mike Bloomberg was asking people to stay indoors for their own safety. It was 8 Above zero with No wind. We were all laughing about it in our 35 below zero blizzard.

kureiff Dec 1st, 2005 09:20 AM

I spent four very cold years in Fargo. One winter we had over nine feet of snow; that was the year with all of the flooding in the spring.

Gardyloo Dec 1st, 2005 09:22 AM

Ice fog. Fairbanks. January. 'Nuff said.

Statia Dec 1st, 2005 09:41 AM

Please send some of it this way! I'm about to suffocate in this heat!

jorr Dec 1st, 2005 09:48 AM

Excluding Fairbanks, Fargo and surrounding areas have colder temps than most any parts of Alaska which have towns or cities. Anchorage has warmer winter temps than Fargo.

sunbum1944 Dec 1st, 2005 10:04 AM

I grew up in Saskatchewan Canada where we were still walking to school when it was 15 below. After that my dad would consider giving me a ride

Dont miss snow - only like it when I can drive to it, play for a few hours and leave it behind.
Even when its been rainy for weeks I tell myself that at least I dont have to shovel it out of the driveway before I go to work.

Gardyloo Dec 1st, 2005 10:05 AM

Anchorage has warmer winter temperatures than lots of places. Thanks be to the peaceful ocean.

However, winters in the north are longer than in the lower 48. Many's the day one can watch the Cubbies on TV in Anc while outside the snow is falling.

kopp Dec 1st, 2005 10:10 AM

Yeah, it's cooling down here in Austin, too. Supposed to only get up to about 70 today. Never fear, by Saturday we'll be back up into the 80s. Finally getting our fall colors. The trees out front are bright red.

Fall in Central Texas - gotta love it!

gomiki Dec 1st, 2005 10:17 AM

OK, I'll chime in. On Cape Cod last winter we had 100 inches of snow. That's pretty darn close to that nine feet in Fargo! And Cape Cod Bay was frozen solid for a couple of miles. I guess we can't keep telling people you can play golf year round here!:)

dusty56438 Dec 1st, 2005 10:32 AM

It got down to 70 this morning on Oahu. Not quite cold enough for snow!

AuntAnnie Dec 1st, 2005 10:34 AM

I just finished snowblowing our private alley and the widow next door's driveway. It is very cold here and we have 4-6" of fresh snow on the ground. It is breathtaking...literally and figuratively!! My DH says there were several people in the ditch on his morning commute. I actually do love Winter. Call me crazy.

jetset1 Dec 1st, 2005 10:39 AM

Here in south central Alaska, my family is anxious for snow so we can get out and ski and snowboard. Unfortunatley, we've been locked in high pressure for a couple weeks and there's only hoarfrost on the trees and a skiff on the ground.
What I am tired of is my sister constantly griping that it's only in the 70's in Houston and they are freezing.(A sibling issue I am certain).
Besides, my pale palor takes years off my real age, lol.

suze Dec 1st, 2005 10:39 AM

Snowflakes just started in downtown Seattle

FainaAgain Dec 1st, 2005 10:56 AM

Ohhh, Jorr, I remember -50 in Moscow. Stepped out, inhaled, and felt pain inside - so cold it was.

When going outside make sure you have hats and gloves, also warm shoes.

Anybody here from Colorado? North Nevada?

Catbert Dec 1st, 2005 11:12 AM

Here in the Colorado Rockies I am completely buried. It's been snowing for 3 days. All I can see out the windows is white. My car is a big white bump outside.

Thyra Dec 1st, 2005 11:13 AM

Oh dear..this morning was quite brisk here in Los Angeles.. had to wear a sweater when out hiking at 6 AM.. of course, after 30 minutes of uphill at Griffith Park.. I was sweating like a monster.. went swimming on Thanksgiving.. but then again, we don't get snow days. only earthquake days... and trust me.. snow must be WAY better :). Enjoy it all you snow bunnies.. have some hot cocoa for me!!! and eat a bunch of hot home cooked food.. yummmmmmm!!!

jorr Dec 1st, 2005 11:15 AM

gomiki, can you drive a truck a couple of miles out on that ice in December to haul a fishing house and keep driving to it safely until mid March?

jetset1, I lived in San Antonio for a few years. Its really easy to get temperature spoiled there. But I elected to move back here to the north country (the lower 48 to you) and put up with the snow and cold. It comes with the territory and I like it here a lot.

Scarlett Dec 1st, 2005 11:32 AM

No snow :(
But it is a great day to go to a movie :)

Catbert, would that be Keystone , Colorado?

gomiki Dec 1st, 2005 11:40 AM

jorr, no to that fish house. It is saltwater after all. (Just the thought made me put on a sweater!!)

virginia Dec 1st, 2005 11:47 AM

i think jorr knows winter!
where are the buffalonians? i know they have it much worse than we do in maine...
and statia you are just mean, mean, mean.lol.

Statia Dec 1st, 2005 11:59 AM

No, no, no, virginia. Everyone else is being mean. ;) I just walked in from reading on my patio for all of five minutes and now have sweat rolling down my back. Ick.

Oddly enough, it's not typically this hot here the first week of December.

JJ5 Dec 1st, 2005 12:15 PM

We have a mini-fishing hut in MI for a small lake (600 acres) that's a hand-me-down from the former owners. We haven't be frozen for more than about 6 weeks lately, so we need to be careful and not leave it out there. SINK! Actually everytime I look at the lake in winter I think of Fargo (the movie) and the wood chipper because of my wood piles.

I've tried to clear the snow to ice skate but it's just too choppy. I have tried. MI had some heavy snow years in the 9O's but hasn't been as heavy with the white stuff since about 1999. I think the NE has gotten our extra share.

gomiki Dec 1st, 2005 12:19 PM

JJ5: I will second your theory about NE getting your snow. I was born in MI and lived in northern Ohio for years. I never saw snow like last winter.

jetset1 Dec 1st, 2005 12:37 PM

jorr~ last night was -8 here, the ice fog stuff. Our first winter here was mild, but the second, -20 to -30. We are on the part of the peninsula with the inlet directly across, and the wind chill sometimes goes to the bone.
I guess we feel like we earn our vacations to warm climates. I do enjoy our summers as they are pretty much perfect.
I have lived in extreme climates too, from Alaska to central Calif. to the Aleutians and now here again, albeit 75 miles colder than from where I was born, lol.
I still remember my South Africa trip in 1984. We left on Thanksgiving day, probably all of 15, to their winter, which was actually balmy and in the 80's. Then after 2.5 months, back to Alaska, which in early March was still a shocking transition to the body.

Here in the south SF Bay Area, the rain is coming down in torrents, our first major storm of the winter. I had to unplug the computer for a while because of lightning that was quite close.

DS is snowboarding at Tahoe today, probably having the time of his life.

seetheworld Dec 1st, 2005 03:07 PM

Okay, all you snowbirds...what about snow shoes?

Can anyone recommend a good pair for a decent price?

Scarlett Dec 1st, 2005 03:09 PM

LOL, BuffaloGirl, I just read that to the Yankee, laughing til the tears came...SO True and SO funny!!
Thank you, we are both still giggling :D

kopp Dec 1st, 2005 03:15 PM

Buffalogirl - the part about the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts -- too funny!

We must have something similar to that here in Texas for our hot summer months.

Cute, real cute!

seetheworld Dec 1st, 2005 03:20 PM

Buffalogirl, that's hilarious!!! I just copied it and sent it to my Buffalo friend - she will get a real kick out of it!!

Hope your leg is getting better :)

Fodorite018 Dec 1st, 2005 03:25 PM

BuffaloGirl--Love it!!! Thanks:)

Seetheworld--We love to snowshoe. The prices can really vary on them. my husband and I have Northern Lites that we love. Very lightweight, but a tad pricey. Our kids have Redfeather from REI. REI carries quite a few brands, and you might check their outlet (online also) for some as well.

klr6773 Dec 1st, 2005 03:55 PM

TOO FUNNY, BuffaloGirl!!!

Well, that was pretty anti-climactic after all! I had another fun day at work though, listening to the Oregonians talk about the great ice storm of (date)....
Sorry Scarlett-no doubt Christmas will be white though, right? :)
