Hi starrs

Thank you for the site... Not trying to sound so picky but I do want water to look at, I think I'm closing in on wanting to see boat traffic like the shrimp boats passing by....And in my case, I need a larger house... Thank you so much for sending me the site as I feel I have been all over the map when it comes to an early May vacation to the SE coast, but I think I'm beginning to feel what I'm really wanting.

You'll find what you are looking for on Sullivan's Island. Really, the houses sit on acre lots at the very minimum.

I live on the coast of South Carolina and have spent time on every beach from Miami to Virginia Beach and the Chesapeake Bay and some of the Jersey Shore.

However my second pick would be Jekyll Island or the older part of Pawleys Island.

You'll need to be in Shem Creek in Charleston to see the shrimp boats.

Hi Go Travel

Thanks for your suggestions. I'm thinking with all I'm learning, possibly I'm looking in the wrong area. I really don't want an ocean front vacation home for this trip as I really don't see the need to pay for an ocean front home when we won't be using the beach that much.

Shem Creek looks so wonderful, but no real rentals except for the Inn.

I'm feeling what I want is a small harbor town in Maine. But I really don't want to go north for this trip.

It's a special trip for me because I'm vacationing with my two sisters and we haven't vacationed together in over thiry years.

Just found out one of my sisters can't go until fall... Oh, well, that leaves me plenty of time to do research. I am beginning to believe everyone that Sullivan Island would fit well.

Thanks

We recently stayed (end of Jan 08) at the Belvidere Club & Resort (belvidereclub.com) which is located by the Charleston Harbour & Marina, Patriot's Point & a couple of golf courses. There are 10 2 bedroom 3 full bath cottages for rent. Gorgeous views of the harbour, Ft Moultrie from every room. In season, there is a water taxi that transports individuals to downtown Charleston if you don't wish to drive. Great restaurants closeby both in downtown Charleston, as well as Mt Pleasant, Isle of Palms, & Sullivan's Island (Poe's Tavern) as a previous post mentioned. We really enjoyed The Boathouse at Breach Inlet, which is right on the marsh (great for dining at sunset; also has a rooftop bar if you'd prefer watching the sunset from there) & is right between Isle of Palms/Sullivan's Island. Our favorite place to eat is The Mustard Seed in Mt Pleasant.
Another place I'm eyeing for a future trip is The Water's Edge Inn in Folly Beach (watersedgeinncharleston.com). It is a newer B & B right on the marsh with eight guest rooms & have recently added 2 3 bedroom 3 bath villas which would be great for accomodating you & your sisters if you didn't want to rent rooms separately. They have bikes for their guests to take out, transportation in a golf cart to the beach which is close by, breakfast, cocktails/appetizers from 4-6 pm.

Sorry, just wanted to add one or two more selections for your perusal: The Inn at Palmetto Bluff (palmettobluffresort.com) which also has cottages on the water (check out the photo gallery online); we haven't stayed there, but we'd like to! It is located in Bluffton, SC along the coast. Also, the Lodge on Little St Simon's Island (littlestsimonsisland.com) in Georgia.

Hi mouseRD

I can't thank you enough for the suggestions on the Belvidere Club and the Watersedge Inn. After going back and forth between wanting a beachfront home, it occured to me we really were looking for something different than being at an oceanfront situation.

I love both suggestions and I believe one sister can actually still make the trip in a week or so. If we can get a reservation at either property, I will make sure to post how we liked it.

Thanks again!

Actually the ocean at night out your front door is VERY nice--relaxing sound, breeze.
You also might find what you are looking for at Debordieu, just north of Georgetown. It's about an hour and a half to Charleston, but I think Sullivan's Island might be all of that also. The beach is beautiful.
The houses at Wild Dunes might be a bit closer but there are some lovely places there also--and just outside of Charleston.
Seabrook anyone? Kiawah?
