Hawaiian vs. Aloha interisland flight - which is better?

Is there one that is better than the other? I am about to book my interisland tix, and don't know if there is a difference between the airlines. Do you have a preference and why?

Thanks!!

Maxine, I have used both numerous times, and both were just fine! Never had any problem, and I've heard the same from other travelers.

These are very short flights-25 to 35 minutes. I can't tell a difference between the two.

They are both highly rated airlines (on-time arrivals, etc.)

No.

For interisland flights, Aloha does not have assigned seats, Hawaiian does.

Other than that there is not much diference.

You should check both their websites. Some flights are cheaper than others.

If you don't have alot of luggage we liked Island Air thought they were more scenic.
Haven't flown Go yet but as Dusty said about the seating there wasn't any difference between the two.

Dusty...I am looking at my roommate's itinerary for next week...On the flight from HNL to OGG, he clearly has pre-reserved seats on the Aloha Airlines flight.

Hulajake - could you elaborate on this - thought they were more scenic What was more scenic - the inside of the airplane (presumably, the scenery outside is the same whether you fly on Aloha of Hawaiian)?

I've been puzzling over that "more scenic" comment also. Maybe one makes a pass over Tahiti or Bora Bora on the way? But that would make it a CONSIDERABLY longer flight. LOL

If frequent flyer miles matter to you, they have different partners. Aloha is with United and I believe Hawaiian is American and Northwest, although I could be mistaken.

Perhaps he/she is flying first class or another class that has reserved seats.

I was on a couple of interisland flights in October & they were not reserved seats.

BeachBoi Dec 21st, 2007 01:38 PM

My roommates in First Class????? Not a chance, dude......They redefine the term "cheap".It could be a relatively new thing, and the tickets were booked thru our TA's GDS system. So who knows..

This is how Aloha boards:

Zone 1 for Alii Diamond and Preboarding

Zone 2 for Alii Gold and Silver

Zones 3-5 (one line) for General boarding.

I was in the Zones 3-5 line. We boarded after Zone 1,2 passengers which probably are the ones with seat assignments.

Most of the passengers were in the Zones 3-5 line.

The only problem with the open seating is that if you are with others, you have to stand in line longer to ensure you can sit together.

But the flights are only 30 - 50 minutes long & this is no big deal unless you have kids that you want close by.

We also had the cheap $39 fares.

I just flew go! over Thanksgiving and I really liked it. You are in a less crowded terminal and the plane only has about 50 seats so again, no crowds.

The only minor drawbacks are that there are no jetways in Honolulu and the overhead space is very minimal. Also, no reserved seating.

I usually fly Hawaiian, but found go! to be very good. There is no real difference in service with the 3 large carriers.

It depends alot on the pilot but on a couple of flights once to Kauai and once to Maui we got better views than from the jets.
Which brings up the luggage remark and for whatever reasons seems to scare off some.
Island Air flys turbo prop planes and carry less than 40 people however flight times are about the same.
Until Go started the fare battle IA was quite often a better bargin than the other two.
