Hawaii Big Island

Need opinions on this resort that I am getting ready to rent for next year. I have a great rate for a two bedroom, two bath. The name is The Sea Village in/near Kona. We will be spending six days at this condo. A negitive is no A/C. Any thoughts. This is the best web site I could find for show and tell. Thanks Richard www.villaresorts.com/svillage.htm

Funny you should ask about Sea Village! I have recommended it many times on this forum.

We have stayed there three times, and sent family members there, too. It is a very nice little place. We like that it is not high-rise, each building is three-stories.

The grounds are nicely kept, with a central garden area and barbecues to use. Free tennis courts. Small pool overlooking the ocean. Free parking.

We have stayed for a week at a time in a 2 bdrm/2 bath oceanfront unit. Most units have amazing lanais with views over the water. The units are nicely maintained, and have washer/dryers. We haven't even had problems with bugs at Sea Village.

Do not be concerned about lack of A/C. Most condos in Hawaii do not have A/C. They have ceiling fans, and lots of windows to catch the breeze.

We have always had amazingly good rental prices there, too.

The location is convenient, just below Kona and above the Disappearing Sands beach.

I think you will love it!

What time of year?

PeaceOut Jun 19th, 2012 09:18 AM

Also, try VRBO

PeaceOut; Thanks so much. Just the fact that it is ocean front is special. As soon as my daughter secures her flight using FF miles, I will book. The unit I am looking at is newly renovated at $100 PN. [2 BR, 2 Bath] Has very good reviews from renters. Great ocean views. 22tango; We are looking at the first week in June, 2013.

PeaceOut Jun 19th, 2012 09:32 AM

It is amazing how affordable it is. $100/night? I remember once we paid just $550/week. That was years ago. When the rental agent said $550, I replied, "Oh, that's too high", because I thought she meant $550/night!

cd Jun 19th, 2012 10:07 AM

Because of PeaceOut's recommendation, we also rented a unit for the month of Feb, but the more I thought of it we cancelled as we were on the third floor and there is no elevator. I thought of the many times we would be climbing 3 flights of stairs and my lower back has gone out on me 3 times in the past 2 yrs. Did not want to chance it but it looks very well cared for!

PeaceOut Jun 19th, 2012 10:12 AM

cd, we always stayed on the third floor, too. It isn't too much of a trek, and the views make it worthwhile! Or you could stay on the ground level, too.

PeaceOut Jun 19th, 2012 10:14 AM

I so wish I was in Hawaii NOW! It is going to be near 100 today, and the wildfire smoke is pretty strong in our neighborhood now. Thank goodness we are not threatened by the fire, but newlywed friends have lost their home.

iris1745 Jun 19th, 2012 10:21 AM

PeaceOut; Very sad about about your friends. Say safe. P.S. cd; That is good information. Fortunately for us, we are in excellent shape/health and will be on the second floor. Once this unit is secured, then I will post for our four nights in Maui. Have done much research and will ask about our condo selection. Richard

cd Jun 19th, 2012 10:41 AM

PeaceOut, I tried for a ground floor but none were available. We took a ground floor, ocean front in Kona Reef. Iris1745, have a great time and post back!

22tango Jun 19th, 2012 10:43 AM

We recently spent a week in a condo a few miles south of there. The place we were in didn't have A/C either, but it was situated just a few feet from the surf in a way that provided a corrider for tradewinds to blow through open windows and lanai doors. We kept those doors and windows open day and night the entire week, and turned on ceiling fans, but still occasionally wished we'd had A/C. And I'm sure those staying in buildings not on the shoreline would have wanted it. So I think it depends some on where your particular unit is located.

Have you been to the Big Island before and/or are you familiar with the area around Sea Village? Not that it's bad or anything; it just may not be what you're imagining.

iris1745 Jun 19th, 2012 10:59 AM

22tango; We will be flying into Kona from the mainland, so the first night will be relaxation. Then one or two trips to the north, plus a couple of very long days to the Hilo side. Then one day left to snorkel or whatever my daughter decides. Will let her be the tour guide. So this is just a broad thought until our nightly reservations are made. In Honolulu, we will be using points and dollars for two rooms at a Starwood hotel. Will give the kids some time away from the middle [upper]age parents, as I will be 78 and wife 74.

cd Jun 19th, 2012 10:59 AM

22tango, what was the name of your condo?

22tango Jun 19th, 2012 12:33 PM

We were in building 5 of the Keauhou-Kona Surf & Racquet Club, cd. Booked it through Aloha Condos: http://www.alohacondos.com/bigisland...d-racquet-club. Nice place, and well equipped, but not very to anything. If there's a next time on the Big Island, we'll bite the bullet and find a place along the Kohala Coast. But right now, Kaua'i has my wife's heart. Mine too.

22tango Jun 19th, 2012 12:35 PM

That s/b, "...well equipped, but not very convenient to anything."

Why is there no edit function here???

iris1745 Jun 19th, 2012 12:40 PM

22tango; I like the idea of A/C. Are they wall units or central air?

cd Jun 19th, 2012 12:50 PM

Iris, you might want to just check out the Kono Reef where we are staying, it does have Air and a block to town which we like so we can walk to restaurants, etc. there VRBO # is 407056 It is beachfront

22tango Jun 19th, 2012 01:46 PM

Iris, the place we stayed in did not have A/C, but it worked okay because it was oceanfront. At $160/night, it was also quite a bit higher than your deal at Sea Village.

Tomsd Jun 19th, 2012 03:20 PM

For the first full week of our honeymoon (spent two days before that on Molokai and the next week on Kauai - up at Princeville) I think we stayed at the same place as 22tango - and had an ocean fronting 2 BR condo room. (check out Oceanfront in this webpage: http://www.alohacondos.com/bigisland...tos-and-videos )

Well, there was a small strand of grass between us and the ocean - and it has a wonderful view - plus - we had the incredible mongi (plural of Mongoose?) playing/cavorting around in the front yard.

They are just like cats - quick as can be - and were brought over to control the rats - but the rats are nocturnal and the mongi are not - so they were not the answer to that problem. :)

Anyhow - we loved it - very peaceful - with a nice pool. Yes. You either go up the hill to the main road (and you get a jump on going to City of Refuge or further to Volcano) - or down Ali drive back toward Kona town - but it's all pretty driving in Paradise as far as I am concerned.

We BBQ'd a couple of times, and also - bought some Mahi Mahi and sauteed it for lunch - enjoying wonderful - fresh fish sandwiches.

Hey - it was the week before the tri-athalon - and we even had a jeep convertible - which I chatted about with two tall - very fit twin sisters from Canada - who had one also - and loved it for hauling their bikes around, etc.

You might double check though and see if they are getting much VOG.

Marginal Jun 19th, 2012 03:29 PM

And exactly what year was it that you visited TBI?

Tomsd Jun 19th, 2012 03:33 PM

Quick story. When we arrived in Kona - I had a pretty good tan and had let the hair grow a bit before the wedding - and had been body surfing and snorkeling - so the mop had a sort of blond/sea washed appearance - and I guess I looked local.

On the way to do something - I pulled into the shopping center on the hill - above the Racquet club - and was just wearing some swim trunks and flip flops - and had the top down on the jeep.

As I was leaving - I looked up - and on the deck at the then Don Drysdale restaurant - overlooking the parking spaces - was none other than my accountant - who had an office just down the hall from me in La Jolla.

He was about 30? yards away - I yelled Chuck - and he looked up and just sort of waved, but didn't really recognize me.

When we got back - I had some fun with him and asked if on his trip - had any of the locals greeted him. He didn't mention this right away - but when I asked him more about it - he said: Was that you - I can't believe it.

We were a bit more formally dressed during office hours back in the day - during the 80's. :)

Tomsd Jun 19th, 2012 03:34 PM

Marginal: That was in 1986 - about my 3rd time on the Big Island - and have been back several times since - the last about 4? years ago.

Why?

iris1745 Jun 20th, 2012 04:42 AM

tomsd and 22tango; We may have changed course. I noticed that some of the condos at the Aloha site has A/C at just over $100 PN. Wife, with allergies, now would like to have A/C, so you have given me a good resource. Thanks

cd Jun 20th, 2012 05:50 AM

Iris also as I wrote above, check out: VRBO # is 407056 it has air and is beachfront. It is the one we are renting 2013

cnelmor Jun 20th, 2012 06:08 AM

I just returned from Kona last week. Spent 11 nights at Kona Mansion 227. I can't speak for any of the other units in this condo development, but I thought KM 227 was an incredible value for the money. 2 bedrooms, 1.5 bath. AC (wall unit) downstairs. Ocean view from the living room and master bedroom. I asked the owner for his best price (all inclusive of taxes, etc.). The down side is that the second bedroom is small and not as well ventilated. Also, this is a second floor unit with no elevator and getting heavy bags up can be a chore. The absolute best feature is location. Less than a two minute walk to the Royal Kona Resort, where I spent many hours on the veranda. Free parking and a five minute walk to downtown. You might check it out if cost is important to you.

cd Jun 20th, 2012 07:06 AM

cnelmor, tell us about Kona itself. We will be there in Feb and withi walking distance to town. We chose that on purpose in order to be walking distance to the Farmer's Market, restaurants, and stores. Is it too crowded? Is it congested? We plan on driving to all the snorkeling/diving beaches. I would be interested in any information you have.

22tango Jun 20th, 2012 07:53 AM

I think you're wise renting a place with A/C, Iris, even if it is right on the shoreline, and especially if your wife has allergies. Because the tradewinds are more prevalent during summer months, so there's more stuff in the air, including VOG, particularly from Kailua south.

The town is actually called Kailua, cd. It's small, and easily walkable. Which means it's also congested. Shopping is almost all tourist targeted; restaurants too. And, it's a bit worn around the edges. My wife described it as still lost in the '60s. But it's pleasant, generally clean, and most importantly, in paradise. :-) Not sure what else to say about it, unless you have a question.

Cnelmor, I wonder if we saw each other at the Royal Kona Resort. We spent a fair amount of time at Don's Mai-Tai Bar. 8-)

cd Jun 20th, 2012 08:04 AM

Thanks 22tango. Actually I kinda like being lost in the 60's makes me feel like a teenager again :-) What places do you recommend for dinner? Drinks with a view? snorkeling? Diving?

22tango Jun 20th, 2012 10:13 AM

cd,
Except for a dinner at Sam Choy's Kai Lanai - view great, food good - we usually had lunch as our main meal of the day. Most memorable of those were at the Hau Tree up at the Mauna Kea Resort and the Beach Tree at Four Seasons Hualalai. Beautiful settings at both places, and wonderful food. For casual meals, we liked Rebel Kitchen and Annie's, both south of town towards Kealakekua and Honaunau Place of Refuge (which both have some of the best snorkeling in the islands). Evenings we most often had drinks and pupus, our favorite spot being the previously mentioned Don's Mai-Tai Bar. Nice views there, too. Huggo's is fun, in an island-kitschy kind of way.

Neither of us dive, but we both loved the snorkeling at Honaunau (google "two step at Honaunau Bay") and near the Capt. Cook monument in Kealakekua Bay. Two step you can do on your own, but Kealakekua you'd need/want to go with a licensed and permitted operator. We did a kayak and snorkel tour with Hawaii Pack and Paddle, and I'd highly recommend them. http://www.hawaiipackandpaddle.com/ Snorkeling is also supposedly good at Kahalu'u Beach, but Kona area snorkeling shops have been asked to discourage it there so the reef can heal.

We also snorkeled at some of the northern beaches, Kua Bay and Waialea Bay being our favorites, but they're better known for swimming and/or boogie boarding. Came face to face with a turtle at Kua Bay though.

Another activity I bet you'd enjoy is a night snorkel/dive with manta rays. We did one with Jack's Diving Locker; simply amazing!!! http://www.jacksdivinglocker.com/cha...mantanight.htm

cd Jun 20th, 2012 11:09 AM

What is pupus? Thanks for all the information! Jacks has already been planned for our son-in-law diving with the manta rays. I did not know you could also go along and snorkel. Could you tell me the cost please?
Thanks again!

22tango Jun 20th, 2012 11:24 AM

Pupus is the Hawaii equivalent of appetizers or tapas.

The snorkelers go out on different boat, but to the same location as the divers. Here's the scoop on the trip offered through Jack's: http://www.jacksdivinglocker.com/sno...ntasnorkel.htm.

Tomsd Jun 20th, 2012 11:26 AM

LOL. Pupus is the Hawaiian word for pre dinner snacks - aka - Hors d'oeuvres.

When we went for our night dive off Kona - the manta rays weren't around but we did enjoy seeing an octapus jet away from us like crazy - being propelled by it's ink.

A few years later I was fortunate to dive with 22 foot giant manna rays off Flamingo Beach - Costa Rica - and they are a trip. They can come up on top and jump like a flying fish.

Just amazing.

And also love the poki at Sam Choy's - Honolulu anyway.

cd Jun 20th, 2012 11:43 AM

I called and snorkelers can go on the same boat for $125.00. She said they have a huge ring that they hang-on to and can also see the manta's

Thanks Iris for letting me highjack your tread, perhaps you can use the same info!

22tango Jun 20th, 2012 11:57 AM

The reason we took the snorkelers only trip was that the dive boat goes out a couple hours earlier (and I think returns a little later). And there's not much to do on the boat if you're not diving. But yes, big noodle ring that everyone hangs onto.

cd Jun 20th, 2012 12:53 PM

22tango, did you see manta's?

22tango Jun 20th, 2012 03:28 PM

Yes. One of our guides counted 9, a couple of which were huge; guessing 12'- 14' wingspan. They'd glide by below or swim straight towards the dive lights we all held, turning away within inches of touching us. Like an underwater ballet.

Our boat captain told us he'd been skunked four straight nights the previous week, though.

cd Jun 20th, 2012 04:17 PM

skunked?

Tomsd Jun 20th, 2012 05:36 PM

Shut out, blanked, nada - as in zero manta rays. :)

cd Jun 20th, 2012 05:44 PM

Thanks Tomsd. I would hate to pay that kind of money and not see any, bummer!
