There are about 10 good sites on this thread that are good for all islands:

I don't think it's the best area, although convenient for Waimea canyon. It's near enough to Kalaheo for restaurants, the area around Hanapepe is dry and dusty, especially Port Allen which is where the excursions to Na Pali go from.

I would enjoy staying in this area. Hanapepe is an old plantation town with a few art galleries and specialty shops. It is close to Salt Pond Beach Park, which is one my favorites. I like swimming in the protected cove area, and there is usually a lifeguard on duty. (I tried to post a link, but it didn't work. Do a Google search for photos of this beach.) You could also visit the Kauai Coffee Company, which is nearby. Not too far from Poipu if you find you miss the touristy trappings of a resort area.

I wouldn't have a problem with it either as this is also the drier side of the island. There is alot to see and do like Polihale Beach which getting to it can be an adventure no lifeguard though unless something has changed.
