Hamburgers in NYC
What are your favorite burger places in NYC? Can we break this into two categories, ones for less than $10 and those over. There seems to be more and more designer burger places these days.
Thanks. |
I rarely eat burgers these days, but think 5 Napkin Burgers are absolutely delicious. They are gigantic, juicy (euphemism for fatty) and flavorful. Their fries are not crisp enough, imo. They are over $10, but you won't eat for 8 hours after - well worth it! I've only eaten in the one in the theater district. Reservations are a must - at any hour!

I think the best burgers in town are at opposite ends of the city,
The White Horse on Hudson St, around 12th, has fun atmosphere, outdoor cafe and GREAT burgers. I think the price is around $10. The other favorite is THE PIPER'S KILT on Broadway and 207th ST. It's a fun kind of place, sort of like your living room, but the food's better, and someone's always happy to go to the kitchen to get you a beer. Burger price is $8.00 Yesterday, I found a place that I will go back to whenever I'm midtown, GREAT food and CHEAP. I even talked to the owner yesterday and told him what a great gem the place is. It's a 50ish dinner/restaurant and the seating is chairs with trays.....think of high school. those kinds of seats, lol. The place has been there since the 1930's and rennovated not very often so it's a real New Yorky feel. Oh and one of those places you can see celebs. One regular is SJP, and since the NBA store is across the street, there were a couple of very 'TALL' guys there yesterday, but since I don't know a a thing about Basketball, I have no idea who they were, but heard they play with one of the major teams. Cudos The Primburger (51st, just east of 5th Ave). |
We like Black Iron on East 5th Street and they make great onion rings as well. It is a bar setting.
|
Five Napkin Burger is great. and even better it has a gluten free burger with a gluten free bun and their fries are fried in a dedicated fryer.
Back when I ate gluten, I loved the burger at Westville in the West Village. It is served on a toasted English muffin. Delish. |
There's a place with great burgers off of the lobby of a hotel near Carnegie Hall - I think it is the Parker Meredien. It's a burger dive joint that looks like it remained the same while a nice hotel was built around it. Not expensive, for the city.
|
McDonalds at Times Square!!
|
David Burkes at Bloomies
|
Juniors - Grand Central food court and I think other locations as well.
|
What about Shake Shack? or P.J. Clarke's?
|
Love the Shack Burger at Shake Shack. The sauce is delish. I find it best to go at off-meal hours for a shorter wait. I like the new place on 8th between 43 & 44. The line seemed to move faster.
|
I hate to sound cliche but, yes... definitely Shake Shack.
|
Love Shake Shack, but I am not sure that it is THE best.
BTW: New Yorkers I know do not refer to Bloomingdale's as "Bloomie's." |
From the official Bloomingdale site
http://www1.bloomingdales.com/about/...ognc?newsID=70 "Brand Bloomie's During the 1970's, Bloomingdale's was a favorite stop of the international avant-garde, epitomized locally by the "Young East Sider" who lived right in the neighborhood. In 1973, when the store decided to stamp its name on panties to launch an intimate apparel promotion, they chose the company nickname as a nod to the young, trendy crowd, and the "Bloomie's" logo was born. Soon, New Yorkers were affectionately referring to the city's second most popular tourist attraction (after the Statue of Liberty) as "Bloomie's" and the hottest souvenir in town was anything emblazoned Bloomie's" Well then, now back to burgers. I felt underwelmed at the burgers behind the curtain at Lemeridian, but happy for the memory of eating there~ |
Old Homestead in the Meat Packing district has good burgers!
|
I've lived in NYC for 50 years and have always called it Bloomies. Tho in our neighborhood the York Ave bus is referred to as the Bloomingdale Express. (It used to stop right across the street from the store....but has since been diverted to 57th St.)
|
P.S. Years ago my favorite spot for burgers was Burger Heaven. They got a lot of publicity in the late '60s because Jackie Kennedy was spotted eating there at the counter. My favorite was the blue cheese burger with their special relish and a glass of red wine. I frequented the one on Madison Ave near 55th street.... but the place now known as Cudos on 51st (see above) was part of the chain, too. Unfortunately, my burger days are pretty much over. Tho I do plan to check out the new Shake Shack in our nabe. -:)
|
Burger Heaven has a great breakfast too! Great when you are staying in a hotel in midtown and want to grab an inexpensive breakfast and not rely on room service or hotel breakfast prices. I don't think i've tried their burger though.
|
I cringe when I hear people calling that store, "Bloomie's!" I guess I run in different circles. The store may have tried to brand it Bloomie's way back when but trust me, no one walks around with bags emblazoned with that logo today! And hopefully, all those panties (shudder) have now made it to the rags-by-the-pound places.
Call it what you will--there are much better places to shop these days. I used to eat lunch at that Burger Heaven when I worked nearby, years ago. I saw Jackie coming out of Kenneth which was on 54th (?) Street off Madison. Also once sat behind her and her long-time beau M. Tempelsman at the Met. |
"Burger Joint" in Le Parker Meridian just south of Central Park. This is the one bakerstreet is referring to. It's hidden behind a curtain -- my kids were so impressed when I led them straight to it last year.
Wish I'd known about Five Napkin Burgers then -- they sound great too!! |
sharing a burger post theatre at Joe Allen's doesn't suck. Not sure it's a great burger, but it has always been fun with a couple of martini's and seeing which actors and their friends show up.
|
ekscrunchy.... you're right. Thru all my decades I've never seen a bag labeled Bloomys... it's been either Little Brown Bag... Medium Brown Bag or Big Brown Bag. Tho i must admit I' haven't been in the store in awhile I (order on line ) so don't know how today's bags are labeled.
|
You know what--I'm not sure either!
I really do not that store very much, although once in a very great while I visit the housewares department. There is little to no service in the clothing areas. Interestingly, the last time (in housewares) was a couple of months ago and when I mentioned to the guy in that department that I had seen a coffee machine for less money at Williams Sonoma than Bloomingdale's was charging, he offered to match the WS price for me. |
|
1. burger joint in the parker meridien hotel.
2. corner bistro, west 4th street. 3. paul's, 2nd avenue and 5th (ish) 4. island burger and shakes. 9th avenue and 51st. burger heaven does have a very enjoyable lunch. |
I just got heartburn looking at all those burgers! Could be a new diet, after looking at all those pictures you feel as if your sickly full!!!
|
Oprah did a piece on this a while back. <i>"Alan Richman traveled 23,750 miles and consumed more than 150,000 calories to come up with his list of "The 20 Hamburgers You Must Eat Before You Die".</i>
Three of the 20 were in NY with one additional in NJ. #2 - Luger Burger @ Peter Luger Steak House, Brooklyn. #9 - Cheeseburger @ Burger Joint, Le Parker Meridien Hotel #13 - Cheeseburger @ White Manna, Hackensack, NJ #14 - Hamburger @ J.G. Melon, NY I haven't eaten any of these, have you? I've loved the burgers and fries at Jackson Hole (various locations) while in NY. |
Alan Richman is a ____
|
I love Island Burger on 9th, but it's so hard to eat a burger without fries and they don't make them there.
5 Napkin is great in my book, and I'm not sure I've had a better burger than PJ Clarke's although a tad skimpy for the price. Their shoestring fries make up for it. I'm also surprised no one's mentioned BLT Burger -- which I thought was really great -- but have only been there once. And in the expensive category, does db Bistro Moderne still do a foie gras and short ribs stuffed hamburger? It was amazing at something like 25 dollars a few years ago. I just looked at their menu and only see one filled with short ribs -- no mention of foie gras, and it is now $32 with a side of fries (which were the best this side of Paris when I had them). |
I can't resist . . .
#1 Peter Luger's. Go at noon. #2 Burger Joint in the Parker Meridien. Go off-hours unless you're ok with a line. |
The best burgers I've ever had in the city were at a place in my old neighborhood - the Back Stage deli, a little hole in the wall on Lex, just north of 62nd St.
An entire burger deluxe is under $10, and comes with free soda. The place is owned by Greeks and their Souvlaki is great, too. |

Five Guys . . 43 West 55th Street
|
Wouldn't it be great to see a "burger off" in the city for bragging rites on the BEST burger in the city. That would be fun.
I'm heading to Primeburger tomorrow, Friday 9/10 around noon, if anyone wants to join in for a great burger. |
I liked Jackson Hole too.
|
for me, the best is JG Melon's! on the expensive side, I liked the ones in club 21 (great sauce!)
|
Five Guys? Are you serious? I know people rave about those places and then they came to our town. LOVE their french fries, but as a guy who likes a nice big thick burger rare to medium rare, I can't stand their thin burgers they will only cook "medium" which I call "well done". And if you want a bigger burger, it still isn't thick, they just give you two dried out thin patties, instead of one. And what's up with not being able to get a nice slice of raw onion on a burger? Sorry, but chopped onions just aren't the same! I'm just surprised how many people apparently don't like thick juicy burgers, but prefer thin well done burgers. Well, to each his own I guess.

No question, absolutely no question in my mind: Get a few orders of loaded sliders at Mark's (33 Saint Mark's Place; b/w 2nd and 3rd ave). Photos available at www.stmarksburger.com

Well, there are many opinions on burgers in NYC, but the official unofficial listing of best burgers comes from the Burger of the Month Club (BOTM):
http://www.burgerrankings.com/ Club members search out superuior burgers, then the whole club goes and rates the place. And there are pictures! |
travelbuff, there is the yearly BurgerBash - quite the foodie scene at the annual Food and Wine Festival in October - it usually gets quite a bit of press
