Hair salons in Wahington D.C.

This is one for the ladies. I will be traveling to D.C. for a week and would like to spend an afternoon at a nice salon getting fully coiffed before hubby and I go out to dinner for our anniversary. Not looking for a cheap chain or the most expensive place either. Just want a chic haircut, trendy highlighying job, and good manicure. Give me the name of a place you trust ladies!

Pat Aug 14th, 2001 11:52 AM

Lauren:
Personally, I'd get the highlighting job at home by someone I REALLY trust and go anywhere for a blow-out and manicure & pedicure. Sorry, but I don't live in DC. Maybe Gary Condit's people can direct you to his salon - his coif looks fab!

L Aug 14th, 2001 12:00 PM

You may call Dennis Roche's salon in Georgetown and ask for Helen ... but be sure to book well before you come to DC. I happen to know a redhead, LOL, thus I know Helen's work quite well. You call Helen, she'll give you coffee or spring water, and a neck massage, and you can relax ... you'll be in good hands. Plan on 90 minutes for cut and color. This is an excellent tip ... just think of me as an internet Welcome Wagon for DC. Ciao

Roger Aug 14th, 2001 12:36 PM

Try Headlines Salon, 326 Massachusetts Ave NE, 546-5151. It's run by a family friend, Angelica Werner. I don't much about hairstyling but I know Angie runs a top-notch shop.

Hanna Aug 14th, 2001 12:55 PM

I live just outside of D.C. and although I can't personally afford it, I would LOVE to get my color done at the salon at the Four Seasons Hotel in Georgetown. The colorist there is supposed to be the BEST and charges for it too! Local rumor has it that the salon Elodie is supposed to be excellent as well. I would love to hear about your experience after you get all "done" and see if it was worth the $$!

Ann Aug 14th, 2001 01:34 PM

This is outside DC, so it may not be what you're looking for, but I like Circe day spa on N. Washington in Old Town Alexandria.

k Aug 15th, 2001 09:33 AM

Ilo in Georgetown is excellent for hair, and also has a full-service day spa for any other pampering you need. Also agree with the post about the 4 Seasons.

http://www.washingtonian.com/etc/shopping
/greathair/salons.html

Sorry for making you cut and paste

Hanna Aug 15th, 2001 10:17 AM

Ilo, that's it!! Thanks, K - that's actually what I meant, not Elodie. I think Ilo is where Monica Lewinsky used to get her hair done, right? Anyway, Ilo is supposed to be the "it" chic salon in town.

Lauren Aug 15th, 2001 10:25 AM

Thanks ladies. The Washingtonian website was especially helpful because it gave phone numbers and prices, even listed some stylists by name at the top salons which were mentioned by other posters. I'm hoping to spend around $250, hope thats enough, at many places it looks like it may not be. Just another reason to up my budget. LOL

L Aug 15th, 2001 10:33 AM

Lauren, you can do Dennis Roche for $250, including tip. Not to annoy anyone, but Monica at Ilo would argue against Ilo ... and besides, I think she changed after the local media got wind. When the new Ritz Carlton on M Street NW was under construction, they asked Dennis to come in and head up their new salon when it opened. So, that's about all I can tell you ... I'm sure you know when you select a salon, it's really hit and miss. Or perhaps you're the one in a 100 that hits it right. Regardless, I hope you have good luck with the place you select, and a nice time in DC. Ciao

? Aug 15th, 2001 12:00 PM

Hey, L - are you getting a kickback or something from Roche? Considering you don't get your hair "done" like we ladies do, you seem awfully convinced that Lauren should go there. I wonder what the attraction is? Also, regarding Hanna's post, I though Monica Lewinsky's hair looked pretty good...

L Aug 15th, 2001 12:49 PM

On the contrary, I know a lot about hair, women's hair. You know that men come in all sorts of shades. Speaking of which, Helen at the Roche salon is a fabulous choice. Kickbacks? Hmmm ... sort of an honesty issue that. I suggest Helen for one reason only ... she takes care of a red head with whom I share a moment or two. If I'd trust her with her, then I'm sure Lauren would be in safe hands. Ciao

whata Aug 15th, 2001 01:59 PM

Not too surprising that a guy who calls himself Leone and says ciao all the time seems to be an expert on hair salons.

Tammy Aug 15th, 2001 04:37 PM

I'd have to agree with [email protected] even though I believe he has blasted me in the past for a recommendation I had made.

I am a hair stylist and have lived in the metropolitan D.C. area. I met Dennis Roche a few years ago at a class he was giving. I was very impressed with him and decided to visit his salon for a pedicure. He runs a "class" operation and I would trust most if not all of his employees to do a good job. Since Helen is recommended and booked weeks in advance, I'd venture to say she's as good, if not better, than Dennis.

As far as the Colorist at the Four Seasons being the Best, he may be one of the best, but there is no such thing as the best for everyone. In fact, it's likely that by the time you're referred to as the best, you're so booked that you no longer spend the time that you did in the first place to acquire the recognition.
Tammy Aug 16th, 2001 03:33 AM

top for Lauren

Leone Aug 16th, 2001 05:28 AM

Thanks for that feedback, Tammy. I bet I didn't blast you too hard. And Whata, if you're open to an idea or two, Leone means lion, and I'm an August person, you know, Leo. I'm certain Whata must have an equally rational derivation. As for hair, if you expect to have a decent realtionship with a stylish, modern woman, you better get up on hair, my friend. She's a redhead with a PhD, and looks terrific ... so I have the best of both worlds. Ciao

dc Aug 16th, 2001 06:39 AM

Norbert's at Connecticut and L sts. Phone is 466-2111. I've been getting my hair done there for years and get compliments from strangers on the cut (it's very simple). Cut and coloring runs about $130-$150--don't get highlighting done so I don't know about the price for that. They have manicure and some spa services also. Very nice place and centrally located.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 07:11 AM

You think, Leone? My husband of 17 years hasn't a clue as to how long it takes to cut and color my hair, where I go, or god forbid how much it costs! He'd have a heart attack if he found out. Some things are best kept a secret!

whata Aug 16th, 2001 07:12 AM
L/Leone/Leo/Lion/whatever - quit dreaming buddy! That redhead will disappear as soon as you wake up.

In D.C. maybe women judge men on their hair salon knowledge - your Demo buddy Condit is an expert I am sure and he seemed to do well with the ladies up there. However, in the real world outside the District of Corruption, I don't think you will find too many women interested or impressed by your beauty tips.

IGotMyButtahWhipped Aug 16th, 2001 07:32 AM

Leone: "As for hair, if you expect to have a decent realtionship with a stylish, modern woman, you better get up on hair, my friend." Excuse, me...I am a woman & have absolutely no idea what you mean by that statement. My husband & I do not converse about my hair or his, nor would we WANT to. Do you REALLY chat about highlighting techniques, styles, cuts & the such with your woman? Bizarro world.

Lauren Aug 16th, 2001 07:34 AM

Thanks again everyone (apparently not just ladies) for the comments. Leone I had to respond because I am just amazed by your knowledge of ladies hair! My husband never realized until after we were married the time involved in getting my hair done. It takes him about 20 min. at the salon while I'm there for 3 hours+! We have been married almost 2 years and he still doesn't know how much it costs though. I spend around $145 for cut and highlights/lowlights every 3 months in St. Louis area, obviously I expect D.C. to be more.

Leone Aug 16th, 2001 08:14 AM

Well, you may laugh at me, but yes, I do know a lot about women's hair ... my wife (the redhead ... and no, she says she's quite happy to be with me, and who wouldn't be, so I don't expect her to leave, LOL), her two sisters, her mom, all very stylish, and my many women friends. Yes, I do discuss their hair with them!! May I tell you I learned out of pure self-survivial. Here's the scene: she arrives after seeing Helen, and asks rather innocently what I think ... and she expects an observant, intelligent answer, one that demonstrates genuine interest on my part. If anyone's confused, it's called marriage and realtionship issues, so sometimes we learn something new, not because we're hair dedicationists, but because we love someone and care about what's important to her. So, take me to task ... I do not care. My masculinity is safe and secure, and my head is on straight. By the way, Gary Condit is a sad example of a man and human being, and it is CA, not DC, which should be responsible for him. Yes, we see a bit of that stuff here in DC, but you may believe it repulses us. My goodness, Curious, that may make four, LOL. Good luck, Lauren. Ciao

Leone Aug 16th, 2001 08:25 AM

Just a footnote on costs: I know perfectly well what it costs ... about $175-$225 every two weeks, depending on whether it's cut and/or color/streaks/highlights. She never misses that appointment. Just the cost of looking gooood. And yes, the woman who washes (with whom I speak italian on occasion) gets a $10 tip for the wonderful wash, neck and head massage, and the espresso, and for being nice to me. Money well spent ... and you ought to see the results!!! I do, and fabulous!! By the way, lets discuss Escada sometime ... I know a wonderful place for E suits ... which I buy for her on occasion. And you thought it was just hair. Welcome to my world, LOL. My god, but redheads are expensive creatures. But never think I'm complaining. Thrill a minute. Ciao

curious Aug 16th, 2001 08:26 AM

Well Leone, I guess my husband never will learn the details of my hair maintenance, at least until retirement. He barely has time to answer his voice and e-mails after a 60 hour work week, so the experience of accompanying me to the Salon for 3 hours on a Friday is out of the question!

IGotMyButtahWhipped Aug 16th, 2001 09:36 AM

Leone:
$5,200 annually for hair care??? WOW! Seriously, though, unless you're a blue hair that gets a "comb-out" every Friday afternoon, who needs their hair either cut or colored every other week? That really seems excessive - I can understand a manicure or pedicure or massage on that schedule - not hair care.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 09:40 AM

Your not kidding Buttah. Just read your post Leone and I too am shocked! No wonder they treat you so well at the Salon. And I thought every 6 weeks was excessive! In comparison to your wife, I'm downright low maintenance!

L Aug 16th, 2001 09:56 AM

Yes, all true. You'd need to know the circumstances ... it's not too much, trust me. And no, none of it is a tax write-off either. Just think of me as observor/baggage handler, LOL. Ciao

whata Aug 16th, 2001 10:06 AM
Leone,

That wife of yours must be really beauty-challenged if it takes that much time and expense for her to look good. I doubt she would appreciate you letting the whole world know via the internet the trouble she has to go through to look good. I prefer natural beauty myself but hey, to each his own.

Freddie Aug 16th, 2001 10:13 AM

Whata, it's "your" (possessive before a gerund). And you're missing some comas, too. Care to try again?

curious Aug 16th, 2001 10:18 AM

Freddie (aka grammar police), I thought you left this forum? Now can't you keep your word or find a teaching job?

Roger Aug 16th, 2001 10:31 AM

Here's my advice. Women should rarely get their hair cut. Let the stuff grow down to your mid-back or butt, and then cut it off two or three inches. Men like their women with long hair; they don't like those hatchet chop-jobs that a lot of the ladies wear, especially Democrat ladies. REAL turn-off.

Freddie Aug 16th, 2001 11:13 AM

Now, Curious, you don't need a ? mark at the end of that lead sentence. Also, you believed, not thought, I'd departed. You can whine about it, but Fodors asked us grammar cops to be vigilant.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 12:21 PM

Now wait a minute Freddie, I distinctly remember you stating that you were leaving on the "Survivor" thread yesterday. Where is that Survivor thread anyway? Another thread falls victim to the Fodor's Nazi's!

Freddie Aug 16th, 2001 12:29 PM

Curious, it's "your" stating. I'm sorry to have to do that, because I like you and CT, but a body's got to defend herself, don't you agree. Looks like "L" went splitsville ... can't blame him.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 12:38 PM

Freddie, I believe your second sentence should be puncuated with a question mark, not a period. I'm sorry too.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 12:40 PM

And yes ,I know it's punctuated, not puncuated. Mea Culpa.

Freddie Aug 16th, 2001 12:41 PM

Curious, you're sharp, but I must differ - my intent was rhetorical.

Todd Aug 16th, 2001 12:43 PM

I disagree with Roger about hair length. My wife looks marveous with short hair. Much better than the pony tail she always wore when we were in college. It also looks more "grown-up" and professional. I have no idea what she spends on the haircut, but we do the color at home.

curious Aug 16th, 2001 12:45 PM

A rhetorical question is still a question, is it not?
