Go Away Katrina!

Mandatory evacuations are underway in the New Orleans metro in anticipation of what may become a Category 5 hurricane, expected to make landfall Monday morning.
I-10 will be converted to one-way traffic only to aid evacuees.
Flights in and out of New Orleans will be affected beginning possibly tonight, surely tomorrow.
Everyone be careful out there.
Prayers are appreciated.

BeachBoi Aug 27th, 2005 09:33 AM

Yes, take this seriously, VERY seriously..ANYONE from Port Isabel to Oak Grove....Prepare, Be Ready...I cant be there to help you, but you are all, everyone of you, in our every thought and prayer...Be Safe!

LoveItaly Aug 27th, 2005 10:59 AM

Hi platzman, everyone sure has my prayers. As I have said before I don't know how the residents keep their sanity with this constant weather problem. May everyone be safe.

gail Aug 27th, 2005 11:13 AM

When in New Orleans several years ago took a tour which explained function of hurricane gates - hope they work and no harm comes to those in your wonderful city.

Statia Aug 27th, 2005 11:24 AM

My thoughts and prayers are with all of you in that area.

My sister and her husband were having a long weekend away from Houston in New Orleans until I called her with the news of the storm early this a.m. I've been talking to her by phone and they are currently moving about 5 mph on I-10 trying to get out of the city along with everyone else.

I'm keeping my TV on The Weather Channel and will be sending good thoughts to those of you in the path. Be safe, and yes....take this one very seriously.

Give us an update when you can.

Tandoori_Girl Aug 27th, 2005 11:47 AM

I have family in Metairie which is between the french quarter and the airport. They're heading to Shreveport.

I don't think there could be a worse scenario than this one. There's no way New Orleans can handle 20 inches of rain like what fell on S. Miami. This could be very bad.

cd Aug 27th, 2005 12:01 PM

Gail
What are the hurricane gates? I too hope they work, but have never heard of them.

OO Aug 27th, 2005 12:34 PM

We lived in Metairie too TG, then on the Westbank later. Our worst fear during hurricane season was that one would come in from such an angle that it would drive water into Pontchartrain then over the city..most of it sitting below sea level. We had a few near misses there, Camille being one of them. Keeping fingers crossed that this one will hit a less populated and vulnerable area. I'm not familiar with hurricane gates either...is it something recent??

Scarlett Aug 27th, 2005 01:30 PM

I will be hoping that this does not cause the damage it could, that no one is harmed and that everyone stays safe!!

OneWanderingJew Aug 27th, 2005 01:32 PM

Godspeed, everyone!!

neworleanslady Aug 27th, 2005 02:09 PM

Oh Joy... Oh Joy...

The good thing for me is: I no longer live there! I live in Lafayette, which is West of NO and where people evacuate TO, so hopefully we are good here. Still, there was no water for my normal Saturday shopping. Hate Hurricanes.

I'm happy Jim Cantore is in Biloxi. For those who follow hurricanes on the Weather Channel, you know it usually hits where he is.

I may end up with a full house by tomorrow as I have many friends in Grand Isle & Lafouche Parish and family in Morgan City and Terrebonne Parish. You'll hear those names if you're watching. I hope they leave before it's too late. We all fall into the "It's not coming here" routine.

I leave Wednesday for Prague. As long as I can get into & out of NO by then, we're good. If not, I'll be driving to catch my flight in Dallas! The stress of packing, finishing up work to be out for a while, selling a house and now this. Boy, do I need this trip!

Hope everyone gets out of NO safely.

Good luck!

neworleanslady Aug 27th, 2005 02:14 PM

PS - It is only 95 today - not the 100 that was predicted, but the heat index is 103 at 5pm. I CANNOT IMAGINE losing electricity in the next few days. UGH.

platzman Aug 27th, 2005 03:39 PM

I've been checking out the real-time internet traffic cams in New Orleans and Baton Rouge. Traffic on I-10 looks light.
All I can say is WOW!
Mandatory evacuations for the last couple of storms were fiascos.
My hats off to the folks who came up with this "Contra-flow" traffic plan.

Patrick Aug 27th, 2005 04:18 PM

This is really a scarey one. And don't ignore the damage it did in the Miami area. I just heard from my niece who managed to fly back to Ohio this afternoon. She and my great niece arrived in the hurricane about 6 on Thursday evening driving over from Naples. The power went off about an hour later. As of noon today they still have none. They have been unable to call as there is no telephone service, and neither could get signals with their cells -- and then they ran out of power anyway. She lives in North Miami near Biscayne Blvd. Nearly all of Homestead is completely flooded and most of the Andrew victims who have rebuilt just lost all their furniture and possessions again-- fortunately minimal damage otherwise to homes. Miami is a mess right now. I liked the comment by one newscaster that they should ban the use of the term "minimal hurricane".

lmsa_mc Aug 27th, 2005 04:46 PM

There is a website I learned about on this board called WeatherUnderground.com that is very informative on hurricanes. It has all the computer models and a couple of blogs by meterologists who explain what's going on so that it is easy to understand the science behind the storm.

msmolly Aug 27th, 2005 05:45 PM

We are in the Brickell area of Miami, right downtown. I thought that the storm was hitting Broward Co. The cable was out,so that was the last that I heard. I have learned my lesson! Keep a radio on. We are lucky we didn't lose power. I hope everyone in New Orleans will get out and keep safe.

neworleanslady Aug 27th, 2005 06:58 PM

Went to dinner and just getting back. I'm afraid to turn on the Weather Channel...

Damn... I'm selling a rental house on Monday. Or WAS selling... ... I made sure last week mid-week that the buyer got his insurance in place earlier b/c insurance companies won't write policies when there is a storm in the Gulf (things most people wouldn't think of), but assumed that it would go somewhere else & I could still close before my trip (I leave Wednesday for Europe). Doesn't look like that will happen. Now, we've both got coverage at least!

Nothing new. I'll be waking up all night to check it.

Birdie Aug 28th, 2005 08:08 AM

GET OUT!!! A category 1 is scary enough. I can't even imagine a Cat 5. Living without power for a week in heat is not fun.

viamar Aug 28th, 2005 08:34 AM

My thoughts and prayers are with you. I hope Katrina somehow misses New Orleans. On a city tour we did while vistiting, we were told how horrible a hurricane can be for the city.
New Orleans is one of my favorite cities. I fell in love with her while I was there. Let's pray for the best.

Barbara Aug 28th, 2005 08:42 AM

I lived in Houma for a year when I first came to the US and so that entire area has a special place in my heart. The pictures I saw last night on CNN showed I-10W jammed and moving very slowly. Now that the evacuation is mandatory, all the lanes are going away from New Orleans and I hope everyone who can go is going. Unfortunately, New Orleans has many, many poor residents who do not have cars and cannot get out. Also, there are many, many seniors who are similarly stuck.

They're talking about the storm surge being 15-20 feet, plus many inches of rain.

Please be smart. This isn't a storm you can gamble with.

mikemo Aug 28th, 2005 09:25 AM

This is one way bad actor. Godspeed to all in harm's way.
M

Tandoori_Girl Aug 28th, 2005 09:35 AM

Just talked to my brother who left New Orleans 2.5 hrs. ago and has only made it 45 miles. They had been on I-10 but it was gridlocked and not even moving.

So if you're not out yet -- GET OUT! Hurricane force winds are expected late tonite in the city. Only 55,000 people can stay in the Sundome and for those people there will be no power. Get out so you can be in a air-conditioned place without water up to your knees.

MzPossum Aug 28th, 2005 09:53 AM

We're starting to see the wind kicking up here in Baton Rouge. We were in Destin for a nice weekend getaway and came home 24 hours early when we saw what was happening.
For those who have relatives on I-10 trying to get out, I have heard people on the radio say they took the Donaldsonville exit, crossed over the Mississippi river on the Sunshine Bridge, then Highway 1 north; this would get them around Baton Rouge. They are not having contraflow on I-10 in Baton Rouge, so the Sunshine bridge might be a good option if you just want to get west and north.
We're battening down and trying to waterproof what we can (ie, big trash bags!)
God bless everyone!

Patrick Aug 28th, 2005 09:56 AM

I know good shelters are hard to come by, but I got shivers thinking of holding out in the Sundome during 175 mile an hour winds. Is it really THAT strong? Sounds very scary to me!

I can't imagine anyone not leaving New Orleans which sits below sea level with what is expected.

Julie304 Aug 28th, 2005 10:04 AM

Please pray for the estimated **100,000 people** in New Orleans who don't have cars and won't be able to evacuate no matter how much they'd like to. I am fearful that this could be a disaster of epic proportions.

Cira Aug 28th, 2005 10:09 AM

I live in Miami and I went through Andrew and just went through a Cat 1 Katrina, my thoughts and prayers are with everyone who remain in New Orleans and with those who have had to flee. What a nightmare this is for them! Please, stay safe!

Cira Aug 28th, 2005 10:10 AM

OO Aug 28th, 2005 10:12 AM

My gut feeling is that this will be "deja vu all over again" for the people of MS. Camille reincarnate. Rarely does a storm hit where it's projected this far out and this is eerily like Camille in '69, with the eye coming ashore at Pass Christian, MS, east of NO.

There are people unable to evacuate NO...if you have no money, where and how do you go. Cannot imagine spending days in the Superdome in the dark!

MzPossum Aug 28th, 2005 10:24 AM

I have been hearing on the radio that there will be free public transportation to take people to various shelters in NO--hopefully people can get to the bus pickups!

Austin Aug 28th, 2005 10:42 AM

I hope everyone gets out safely. THis will be devastating to NOLA. I just heard that the winds are now at 184 mph. That is terrifying.

KathrynT Aug 28th, 2005 10:43 AM

In response to a post above, I believe the hurricane gates are a system of levee gates built around the city. Unfortunately, this hurricane is expected to bring a higher storm surge than the gates can handle.

Our thoughts are with all who are in the path of Katrina. Please stay safe!

neworleanslady Aug 28th, 2005 10:56 AM

I have friends on Hwy 90 from Thibodaux/Houma heading my way to Lafayette. They aren't really moving, but are managing to inch along. I am glad most people are listening and getting out, although as of 8am my father was planning to stay in Morgan City. A woman is in my complex staying with her son. She evacuated from St. Bernard Parish (South of NO). She took her dog & her pictures and doesn't expect to have anything to go home to.

No cell phone service either, unless you're lucky. This is not a good time to be living like it's 2005 without a home phone. Although, I'm the only one I know AT HOME. The others I would call are on the roads driving.

Last I heard, they are expecting it to hit the eastern part of N.O., Slidell and that area. I normally don't wish a hurricane on anyone, but N.O. just cannot recover from this. Though, as someone said, they rarely hit where predicted. Jim Cantore was still in Biloxi. That's my guess. Just waiting for that North turn!!

Intrepid1 Aug 28th, 2005 11:02 AM

Latest word is that it is stronger than Camille...not good news

Patrick Aug 28th, 2005 11:04 AM

Sustained winds over 180, gusts to 217? This is simply surreal!

neworleanslady Aug 28th, 2005 11:27 AM

That's a good description, Patrick. Simply surreal. I had a dream that I was tubing in the bayou and there were 2 huge alligators near me. I saw one swim by that was a "dark spot" in the water like they say you will see for a shark. That was at 6:10 this morning. I woke up scared. Then I turned on the Weather Channel... It's only gotten worse today.

Also, it's 97 right now. Can't imagine being stuck in traffic.

Opening my first beer. I want to sit in front of the tv all day, but I've got packing to do. Europe awaits. Hurricane or no hurricane. We've changed our flight for Wednesday & are planning to drive to Dallas instead of N.O.

Fox News is showing the lines at the Superdome. OMG. What a horrible night they will have.

Romy Aug 28th, 2005 12:04 PM

This thing is a MONSTER. You're in my thoughts and prayers up there. Do not take this lightly, please!!! No doubt about it, this will be catastrophic.
We thought it was bad here in South Florida, but it was nothing compared to now!

GoTravel Aug 28th, 2005 12:13 PM

What made me so angry about this storm is when it was scheduled to hit Miami, the weather forcasters kept calling it a 'minimal' hurricane. There is no such thing as a minimal hurricane.

Godspeed to those of you on the Gulf Coast.

P_M Aug 28th, 2005 12:41 PM

Best wishes and prayers to all in Katrina's path.

johnthedorf Aug 28th, 2005 12:54 PM

When I fled Frances last summer I decided to go to NOLA. Why not have some good food and see the sights? I would imagine that Bourbon Street will be Rockin' with some of those "It can't hurt us" crowd. I have the Beadcam on so I can see how the fish are biting on Conti tomorrow morning. Obviously the tourists haven't been on the Cemetary tour to understand why the dead are intered above ground.

Tandoori_Girl Aug 28th, 2005 01:07 PM

I heard they're running out of gas on the highways. I'm sure there are no trucks headed IN to fill up those underground gas tanks. This just keeps getting worse and worse.
