Fried Chicken or Chicken 'n Dumplings

Which has more saturated fat and is the less healthy of the two? Two pieces of fried chicken or one serving of old fashioned chicken n dumplings?

starrsville Aug 16th, 2006 04:15 PM

Do you know the answer? I sure hope so.
I would guess the fried chicken (not in LARD by the way! :-) )

hunterblu Aug 16th, 2006 04:20 PM

well that's what I thought too, but my DH claims that with the cream and butter going into the dumplings they are neck n neck for saturated fat content. I think he's wrong.

starrsville Aug 16th, 2006 04:25 PM

Cream? My mama never put no cream in C&D!

It's kinda like those trick questions on consumer report shows and the salad always have more calories and fat than the burger meal. The big 'ole muffins at Starbucks have more calories and fat than a chocolate glazed donut from Krispy Kreme.

Fried chicken that has been DEEP FRIED quickly and drained probably has less than old fashioned chicken and dumplings, which aren't any good unless they are cooked in the broth of a very fat hen. They are good because they soak up the fat. In fact, some cooks will add extra butter to make them richer.

Now, unfortunately, people don't use a fat hen and the dumplings are made without cream or eggs. Just water and a little oil. Phooey!! Chicken flavoring makes the broth taste chickeny, not the real thing. So I guess dumplings like that might have fewer calories....but they aren't old fashioned chicken n dumplings and you can tell your husband I said so!

OldSouthernBelle Aug 16th, 2006 06:41 PM

My Gma and Mom always made their dumplings from just flour and water.

I always skim the fat off the broth before I put the dumplings in. I can't stand all that grease, yuck! You can even cool it in the frig for alittle while and remove all the hardened grease that way. This does NOT remove flavor.
..they are still tasty.

However I prefer chicken and rice! Then you can use brown rice, which is even better for you. So, I'd vote for the dumplings being less, but only if I make them.:))

...both are good, but not particularly good for you.
My solution is to eat them both while on vacation.
Then everybody's happy. Except for the Chicken.

MikeT Aug 16th, 2006 07:19 PM

What does this have to do with travel? Seriously. Enough with the food tips and get back to travel.

ElendilPickle Aug 16th, 2006 09:41 PM

Well, MikeT, if one is planning to *travel* to the South, and if one wanted to experience good Southern cuisine but needed to watch the amount of saturated fat in their diet, this is a perfect thread! :-)

How is this thread any different from the "where should I move?" or "Help me find a place to live in New England," threads? It is as travel related as they are.

rb_travelerxATyahoo Aug 17th, 2006 07:32 AM

That is about the most FOS rationalizations I've ever read here, Speedbuggy.

Attn Fodor editors: Before you start editing my posts again please note that "FOS" was used in the Budman Recipes thread. Obviously an OK expression.

Ya know, while I complain to the writers about these chit-chat threads, at least I don't cry to get individual comments deleted. MikeT: You notice that, right? Wazza matta? Kill the messenger? Thin Skin?

annesherrod Aug 17th, 2006 07:36 AM

I wish this thread would disappear because it makes me hungry!!!

GoTravel Aug 17th, 2006 07:37 AM

Fried Chicken if fried in vegtable oil is has much less saturated fat than Chicken and dumplings.

starrsville Aug 17th, 2006 07:40 AM

(I'm going to be mean here)...
GoT, don't you know that Southerners fry everything in LARD? I was told so on this very board.

kamahinaohoku Aug 17th, 2006 07:40 AM

Unless there are registered diaticians on this website who are willing to answer the question, I'm in agreement with MikeT...this question belongs on the Food Channel or Epicurious...not here. Sorry.

rb:
1. My comment was tongue in cheek.
2. If you are opposed to this thread, why top it instead of letting it continue to disappear into obscurity?
3. What is FOS?
4. Obviously there's a lot more to this for you with your cryptic messages to the editors and MikeT.

Hope you have a great day! And I personally could care less about either fried chicken or chicken and dumplings unless it's on my dinner table.

GoTravel Aug 17th, 2006 08:23 AM

But of course starrsville!

It is one of the four southern food groups:

White Flour
Processed Sugar
Salt
Lard

Anything can be made from the combination of the above ingredients.

Got something healthy like a vegtable? That's okay, dip it in salted flour, fry it in lard, and you got yourself some good southern cooking!

marleneawe Aug 17th, 2006 08:28 AM

Why has this turned into a cooking board. Thought it was suppose to be on travel. Getting rather out of hand here, almost as many "food" related subjects than travel.

bbqboy Aug 17th, 2006 09:35 AM

I don't know about you guys and gals, but I travel to eat. Experiencing the food in other locales is one of the highlights.
I'm sorry if that offends, although this is one of the most unlikely threads I'd have ever nominated for "panties in a wad"-PIAW-status.
Some folks just like to gritch.

SAnParis Aug 17th, 2006 09:47 AM

Who cares, I'll eat them both then you folks won't have to worry about your fat intake...
