Is it far to walk from the train station in Fredericksburg up to the historic/tourist area? Is it a "safe" area to walk from? I'm thinking of taking a day trip down to Fredericksburg from DC in September and was just looking for any input or if anyone else had done this.

When you exit the station, you are at the edge of the main street through town. Getting to the National Park would be about a 10 minute walk. I'd take a cab. Your trip is very doable.
