Freaky Friday Rants & Raves 9-8-06

Rant: I'll just blame it on my computer.

Rave: a 117 BG this morning.

bennnie Sep 8th, 2006 06:22 AM

phew... I thought maybe the editors had nixed our tradition or maybe that it was Thursday

Rave: Patriots football to root for now that the Red Sox are done.

Rant: No progress on the remodel in a week - nothing, zippo, zilch. Except I'm moving ahead with picking paint colors for walls that don't exist.

Rave: Gubernatorial race in Massachusetts actually has 3 strong candidates for the Dem primary. Nice to have a choice.

jorr - what's a 117 BG?

gomiki Sep 8th, 2006 06:23 AM

Rave: I'm number three. More later.

LoriNY1 Sep 8th, 2006 06:31 AM

Rave: Football season starts Sunday (OK last night was really the first game)

Rant: Summer's over!

angethereader Sep 8th, 2006 06:33 AM

Rave: Son is home from Japan and working. I drive him to work in the AM and home in the PM - this gives us an hour together in the car every day. Missed this sooooo much.

Rave: DH talked to me about upset from last week!! He apologized. Whew!! I'm just glad it's over.

Rave: Beautiful weekend in store.

Rave: Much as I love having son home, he's going up north with friends this weekend so DH and I can have alone time. Win/win!!

Rant: HBO cancelled my favorite show after 3 years in a 5 year story arc. Am cancelling HBO!

Rave: I guess I'm very lucky this week if that is my only rant!!

ethel Sep 8th, 2006 06:35 AM

Rave: I'm 20+10 today.
Rave: My bridal shower and bachelorette party are tomorrow
Rave: My coworkers threw me a shower on Weds.
Rave: I lost 1.5lbs this week.
Rave: Another weekend full of celebrations.
Rave: My fiance bought me an IPOD for my 20+10 day.
Rave: 20+10 celebration dinner tonight at my brother's. His girlfriend is cooking.
Rave: She's the same one who's hosting my shower tomorrow.
Rave: She's such an angel.
Rave: Wedding dress had to be taken in more!
Rave: I have no rants!!!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!

Tess Sep 8th, 2006 06:36 AM

Rave: This time next week DH and I will be walking along the beach in Santa Monica. Oh boy, am I ready for a little r&r. Lots of 'stuff' going on at work--none of it good--and general stress has my stomach in knots. We're joining 30,000 or so Husker fans in LA for the USC/Nebraska game so it should be a good time, win or lose. Can't wait to go back to Malibu Seafood--our favorite little seafood shack.

Rant/rave: Went to a school meeting last night for parents of seniors. The high school counselor told us this will be the fastest year of our lives. The kids order caps and gowns on the 26th of this month, so I guess they're not kidding! I had to go home and have a nice glass of Merlot to calm down :-)

Rave: Gorgeous almost-fall weather.

Jorr, way to go on the BG!

Tess Sep 8th, 2006 06:39 AM

ethel, we were posting at the same time. Happy birthday! Enjoy 30--it's a great age and seems very young when you're 24+10 :-) Have a fun weekend of celebrating.

BuffaloGirl Sep 8th, 2006 06:42 AM

Rant: I fell asleep in the bathtub last night.

Rave: I fell asleep in the bathtub last night.

Rant: My mother passed away suddenly two weeks ago. Two days after her funeral, my father was taken to the ER and he's been in the hospital since. He's weak and fragile, and the doctors tell me he will need constant care. Looks like dad will not return home and will end up in a rehab/assisted living type situation. I (we) really weren't expecting this. (Who does?)

Rave: Friends and family tripping over themselves helping me through this.

Rant: Fall is coming way too quickly for me. I wasn't done with summer. I've got to sneak in one more day at the beach. Hopefully, next week.

Rave: My brother suggested that after all the dust settles he would like me to go to Italy with him (in honor of mom who's Italian but never got to Italy). He's traveled thru Europe extensively with his wife and kids, but says this time he's only going with me...his sister. I know when I'm feeling better I will be very excited. I've never been to Europe! I can finally move on from the US and Canada boards!

Have a wonderful weekend everyone!

Tess Sep 8th, 2006 06:44 AM

I'm a dork. Actually, I'm 24+20--eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek. About that Merlot????? :-)

cmcfong Sep 8th, 2006 06:50 AM

BuffaloGirl, I am so sorry to hear about your dad's illness and your mother's passing. But, I loved the idea of going to Italy to honor her. Kudos to your brother. Though I am now officially 20 + 40, my brother and I often travel together. He is great company. May the trip bring your heart peace.

Fodorite018 Sep 8th, 2006 06:57 AM

Rave-Our friends/neighbors just arrived home this week from Russia with the 2 girls they adopted. The process has taken 2 years, and our friends almost gave up, but it finally happened and these little girls are getting a wonderful family!

No rants after that:)

Rave--DS has their first official football game of the season tomorrow! last year he had horrible coaches so lost all confidence, but after months of working with a private coach and having new coaches this year, he is a new kid!

ethel--Happy Birthday! How many days til the wedding?

tess--LOL, I was thinking you had to have been awfull young when you had him;)

BuffaloGirl--So sorry to hear about your parents. Sounds like a great brother though and a great idea.

seasweetie Sep 8th, 2006 06:58 AM

Buffalogirl, I am so sorry about your Mom's passing and you're father's changes. It's been a year and a half, but I miss my Dad every day.

Ethel - congrats on a great week (and weekend to come!) I've been following your progress since I came on this board.

Rant: Biopsy yesterday, now have to wait a week for the results - nerve wracking.

Rant: DH decided last night was the night to pitch a fit about what a pack rat I am. I know he expresses his concerns/fears in obtuse ways, but I didn't like his topic or timing.

Rant: DH's BIG sale he'd been working on for 8 months fell through this week. Back to square one..

Rave: DD's mini-flu is much improved, and she refused to miss a day of school when it was bad. What a great kid!

R/R: Waiting to hear about a new job I've had two interviews for...

Rave: Good sleeping weather.

Have a good weekend, Fodorites!

Rachel Sep 8th, 2006 06:59 AM

Good morning all.

BGirl-my condolences to you. It's good to hear that your friends and family are all there for you as you go through this. Our town may not be glamourous but the people of buffalo are wonderful.

Tess-Wednesday was the last "first day of school" for us (we're not counting going to college as a first day of school). How did that happen? We dont have orders for cap and gowns yet, but due dates for Sr. pics! We better get moving on that!

Rave: Life is good. the sun is out. I have bulbs and fall flowers to plant this weekend. Football season really starts.

Rant: woke up at 1 am with stuffy, runny nose and I don't think its allergies. My ears are plugged and I can't hear a thing (that could be a good thing) Yuch!

Prayers to those in need.

ethel Sep 8th, 2006 07:00 AM

Oh, buffalogirl, I'm so sorry to hear about all that you're going through. I'm very sorry to hear about your mother's passing...And, here I am just raving all over the place.

Tess--"You're only as young as you feel" and I still feel 21. With planning the wedding, it's taken the blow out of turning 30. It's really not that bad. I'm kind of enjoying all the attention and over the hill jokes.

CAPH52 Sep 8th, 2006 07:17 AM

Happy Birthday, ethel! ((^)) And enjoy all of those wedding preparations!

BuffaloGirl, I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your mother and the health problems of your father. So much to get hit with all at once. You're in my prayers.

As are you, seasweetie. Waiting is the absolute worst.

I have such a jumble of rants and raves this week that I don't even know how to start. Fortunately, none of the rants are insurmountable!

We came back a day early from our trip to take our daughter to school because my husband cracked a wisdom tooth while we were there. Of course this happened the Sunday night before Labor Day. (And he was in horrible pain.) It was a huge hassle finding someone to see him to tell him that it was a cracked wisdom tooth that needed to come out. But, because he still has his porto-cath from chemo and is on coumadin to keep it from clotting, they couldn't pull the tooth.

He got an appt for this AM with the oral surgeon our dentist uses. The oral surgeon wanted him to check with his PCP to make sure it was okay. (DH hasn't taken any coumadin since Tuesday AM.) Of course, despite my gentle nagging ( :D ), DH waited until this AM to call his PCP. And, wouldn't you know, 45 minutes before his appt, which is in a suburb at least half an hour from here, his PCP said they want to do a blood test first. And they're at least 15 minutes in the opposite direction! The oral surgeon was supposed to be leaving for the day at noon. But he very generously said he'll take DH after his last appt if necessary.

To add to the fun, last night I broke a tooth! So I'm waiting for a call back from our dentist. He must be wondering what the heck we've been eating lately!

Rave: Other than the tooth troubles, we had a very good trip. We had a great time with old friends in Syracuse on Wednesday. And DS had good college visits.

Rant: The main purpose of the trip was leaving DD at school. :'( I miss her so much. But I'm extremely grateful that she's at a school she loves.

Rant/Rave: Because we're back a day early, I can go to work today. Guess I'd better go shower and dig up some clean clothes! :D

Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend! :)

StephCar Sep 8th, 2006 07:17 AM

mms, awesome rave! My SIL is waiting for a baby from Russia right now, currently number 10 on "the list!"

Happy Birthday Ethel!

My sympathies for all those with struggles this week.

Rant: Got stuck on the roof over the weekend. Had to send 4 year old in with the message "mommy needs your help, she is stuck on the roof!"

Rave: My gutters are clean!

Rant: Developed a severe bacterial infection in my thumb. Which, according to my DH, was most likely a result of compulsive cleaning I have been doing after being away from my house and yard for 2 months.

Rave: Powerful pain medication has reduced my desire to cut off my thumb.

Rave/Rant: I am now forced to relax and enjoy being home after a summer of travel.

Rave: Spending time with my 2 year old when my 4 year old is in school. The years are going too fast!

Rant: A best friend of mine just had IVF and it did not work. I don't understand why people that would make great parents have to go through so much.

Have a good weekend, and STAY OFF THE ROOF.

kureiff Sep 8th, 2006 07:24 AM

Steph: Good advice! LOL about the roof.

Ethel: Happy Birthday to you! I'll be turning 30 the end of this month. ((^))

BuffaloGirl: My condolences and many good thoughts for your dad. I hope you're able to go to Italy.

Seasweetie: Good thoughts for your biopsy results. How stressful!

Rave: My best friend is visiting from Seattle. She's a brilliant third year medical resident, and I'm a third year lawyer.

It's awfully nice to commiserate with someone else who spends most of her day wondering if she knows just what in the heck she's doing!

Rave: Fall weather.

Rant: Busy weekend plans when I'd rather stay home.

Rave: Tomatoes from the garden.

annesherrod Sep 8th, 2006 07:26 AM

Buffalogirl - so sorry about your news. That has to be very difficult.

Rave - I am going to Dallas for parents Weekend at my DD's University.
Starting to plan for Spain in Jan. :)

The St. Louis Art Fair is this weekend and it is touted as being one of the best and biggest in the country. I look forward to that as well as the listening to jazz bands, and good food!

Rants- DH may have to go in for surgery soon on his back. :(

My bathroom ceiling caved in due to a leak above... 90+ year old house.

ethel Sep 8th, 2006 07:33 AM

MMS--since you asked, it's 22 days away. Yikes!!!

seasweetie--I hope you're biopsy comes back negative. And, thanks for following me :)

Fodorite018 Sep 8th, 2006 07:39 AM

StephCar--LOl at being stuck on the roof! At least your little one was there to relay the message!

Seasweetie--I hope the biopsy comes back negative. That waiting is awful...I know the feeling.

ethel--You picked a good month...our anniversary is tomorrow:)

Which...I totally forgot about posting that as a rave! Duh!

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 07:44 AM

Jorr, you are really getting that glucose under control! Good job!!! :)

angethereader Sep 8th, 2006 07:45 AM

buffalogirl - Sorry about your mom. The unexpected losses take more time to get used to. I've had both. You either grieve somewhat before or you grieve after.

I think I love your brother. What a nice idea. I've traveled with 3 of my sisters and their spouses (separate vacations - I am not crazy!) and each was special in it's own way. I also love the idea of traveling to Italy to honor you mother. Very nice.

AnnMarie_C Sep 8th, 2006 07:45 AM

Happy Birthday, ethel! ((^)) I think I remember what 20+10 was like. ;-)

Tess, enjoy a wonderful trip!

BayouGal, I am sorry for your loss and to read your dad is not doing well. Prayers to you and your family. [-o<

Rave: A cool front made it as far as south Texas bringing much needed rain and lower temps. Some of our yards hadn't seen rain since early May!

Rave: Driving home from the grocery store this morning and seeing an owl in flight.

Rave: Tiff. You are a sweetheart! ((l))

CAPH52 Sep 8th, 2006 07:50 AM

jorr, I forgot to congratulate you on your good number! Good job! :)

CAPH52 Sep 8th, 2006 07:54 AM

Happy Anniversary, mms! ((F))

jorr Sep 8th, 2006 07:55 AM

BuffaloGirl, I wish the best for your family.

bennnie, BG means blood glucose. Diabetics need to lower the number and keep it constant. I freaked when I saw the number on the monitor. I must be doing something right.

My computer is haunted. I clicked on FFR&R and on the right side of the screen where the posts appear there was a message from my internet provider. It was actually within the Fodors postings area complete with the scroll bar on the right side. Nine years ago I developed a web site I owned and developed on my own. One day I opened it and saw a huge picture of David Duchovney (The X Files) on my front page. A person would need FrontPage software and my two passwords to do this. The site was developed at home and nobody had access to my computer. I never found out how it could have happened. Insert Twilight Zone theme music here!

FainaAgain Sep 8th, 2006 07:57 AM

BuffaloGirl - hugs and prayors!

Seesweetie - been there, try to keep yourself busy at daytime and asleep at night, take a pill or a glass of wine if needed.

Happy birthday to all, from "sweet 16" to sexy 80 ;)

And you guys better stop that tooth-breaking, thumb-wrecking streak! Or else :)

RAVE: going to Chicago on Tuesday

RANT: I'll miss the Internet!

RAVE: who cares, I'll have 2 GTGs planned :)

kureiff Sep 8th, 2006 07:57 AM

Happy Anniversary mms! ((L))

otto Sep 8th, 2006 07:58 AM

rave: after a long, ardous summer of searching, i got a new job! i have been working for an international airline for a few years now, this job is not in the travel industry, but the background is beneficial. i'm getting excited for the change! i start monday the 18th.

rave: my fathers bday is monday. going to the beach for the w'end!

rave: jazz and ribs tonight at blue smoke! love it.

rave: brothers wedding went off without a hitch, no pun intended...everyone had a nice time.

buffalogirl...so sorry to hear about your mother and the health of your father. warm and kind thoughts to your family at this time. as for italy, sounds like you don't have a choice, you must go for your mother. :-D

angethereader...glad to hear the issue has passed. i was thinking of you. it just goes to show you you never know what the other may be thinking, so you just have to keep talking! even if you don't say it right the first time, or you wait to figure out what to say, just keep talking.

BayouGal Sep 8th, 2006 07:59 AM

AnneMarie, I saw your post and just about lost it, wondering how you knew. Then I read the other posts and realized you meant Buffalo Girl.

My 90 yo father-in-law fell, needed stitches and injured his head during the night last night. He is very disoriented and confused now. A sib is with him now to see his doctor. We're not sure what happened. Our family is now trying to decide how to go from here. He's been determined to live alone, but we may need to move him in with us. Your prayers are still needed and would be greatly appreciated.

So sorry for your loss, Buffalo Girl, and my heart goes out to you. You and your dad will be in my prayers. God bless you, hon!

BTilke Sep 8th, 2006 08:02 AM

BuffaloGal, our sympathies. My father died suddenly two years ago and now my mother, who's 79, is feeling frail and no longer up to managing the house in Florida on her own. She's looking into one of those communities that offer both independent (with services) and assisted living. They're pretty expensive though, the entrance fees and monthly rent are stiffer than she expected.

Rave: Found £10 (about $20) on the street this morning. But the neighbor's grown son had just gotten into his car and left from that exact spot, so I think the money was his. Gave it to his mum; if it's not her son's, we'll have a drink together this evening.

Rant: Bought a new "premium brand" facial cleanser. Tried it yesterday, thought it smelled great and my skin wasn't dry at all afterwards. Then my face was all broken out this morning. Took a closer look at the bottle on the bathroom sink and realized I'd washed my face with a thick, goopy body lotion by mistake :-( Oops.

Rave: Two great new books arrived in the mailbox this week from Amazon, La Bella Figura: A Field Guide to the Italian Mind and Ciao America: An Italian Discovers the U.S., both by Beppe Severgnini. Witty and informative.

Rave: It will be cool, sunny and dry this week-end.

Rant: Tried one of the fruity, flowery Herbal Essences conditioners and went outside to hang some laundry while my hair was still wet. Was immediately surrounded by several bees and wasps drawn to the scent! Had to beat a hasty retreat back to the house and stayed inside til my hair was dry. Not my week for "products."

cmcfong Sep 8th, 2006 08:10 AM

After reading AnnMarie's post I scrolled up and down, had I missed Tiff's FFRandR contribution? No. Then it hit me, AnnMarie said it just because it is so true...Tiff, you are a sweetheart!

OldSouthernBelle Sep 8th, 2006 08:11 AM

Buffalogirl: My sincere condolences for your mom and my sympathies regarding your dad!
My step-dad has a full time caretaker, and I work in Rehab, so I know abit about what you are going through, though I haven't lost my mom.

ethel: I'm excited for YOU! Happy BD too!

Rant: Have to work Sat.

Rave: Wonderful cool weather (High of 77o yesterday - far from our record High of (98 degrees).

Rant/Rave: DH has been having a dental problem in recent weeks. Tuesday, he returned to the dentist in the afternoon, but by 8PM, he was in unbearable pain and had me call the dentist at home.
The dentist, who is about 75 yr. old agreed to meet us at the office after hours to take care of the problem! He is a very sweet and caring man, which is the reason he's still working at this age!---I just looked back over the posts and saw yours, CAPH - guess it was a week for dental problems all around!

Rave: Only about a month more to wait for my new GS!

Rave: Had a good Labor Day gathering!

Rave: Received my Entertainment book in the mail yesterday....more good planning fun coming up!

ilovetotravel29 Sep 8th, 2006 08:12 AM

Rave: Bubble Milk tea for 99 cents! I get 4 at a time and put them in my freezer for later!

Rant: Rude people on message boards (no, of course not this one, but some people take such liberties that they would never take with a person face to face. I am on a certain health forum, and some people are soooo negative it isn't even funny... :( phooey!

jorr Sep 8th, 2006 08:17 AM

StephCar, Same thing happened to me last year. I was home Alone stuck on the roof. I panicked. 1/4 mile to the nearest neighbor. Stupid me. Just yesterday I called a friend to pay him to do it for me this time. I'm afraid of heights.

angethereader Sep 8th, 2006 08:20 AM

fainagain - I'm looking forward to meeting you next Friday night! My very first GTG.

mms - I have a niece from Russia. She was adopted at nearly 2 years old and is doing great in Green Bay. She's now 6 and just started first grade. What a beautiful and lucky little girl.

otto - thanks for the good thoughts. It's not like I didn't know it would pass - we're coming up on 25 years - it just doesn't get easier to have discontent. Maybe I think at 20 + 27 I should be content by now.

bayougirl, DTilke and Buffalogirl - My condolences, having frail parents is hard. My FIL died last year after more than a year of failing health. Of course we're the only ones who live in town. In laws did not help much. Thank heaven for my oldest son - he really took care of his grandpa. Love when my kids make me proud.

Luckily my mom is still raring to go at 76. I hope for her continued health but don't count on it. She's the only parent my DH and I have left. So I told her she needs to be around for another 20 years or so. DH agrees, he loves my mom. I guess that's another RAVE!

RAVE: All the caring people on this forum and the ability to rant without judgement!!!

bennnie Sep 8th, 2006 08:41 AM

Reverse the Rant! - workers just showed up at the house!!! Yippee!

BuffalGirl - Prayers for your family.

Seasweetie - I hope there is good news for you.

Jorr - thanks for the explanation and congrats on the good number. Keep it up.

BayouGal - prayers for your family as well.

And good thoughts for all Fodorites.

jetset1 Sep 8th, 2006 08:53 AM

* Rave: my son is driving himself to school this year, and so far, so good. If 8 a.m. comes and goes without a phone call, my b.p. returns to normal levels:)

* Rave: looking forward to seeing friends and family later this fall.

* Rant: need to either do colonics or become a vegetarian after the summer diet sins!

*Rant: mother-in-law in beginning stages of Alzheimer's.. very sad when we talk on the phone and she asks other grandkids names, but with about 28 them, I'd need a sticky note to remember at age 80 too..
again, if the phone rings before 8 a.m., and it's only a friend or neighbor, my b.p. returns to normal:)

((*))instead of New Mexico, we will surprise my mother-in-law and the family at Thanksgiving..we can travel to other places later, but this year, it is important to think of others happiness as well.

*Rave: good natured posters who are evolved enough not to make mountains out of molehills.. a kind word, a shared joke or even silence is so much better than being mean spirited or spiteful.

*Have a wonderful and healthy weekend, and call a family member who may not have heard from you for awhile. The little things matter the most((F)) J.

AnnMarie_C Sep 8th, 2006 09:12 AM
