Freaky Friday Rants and Raves 9-15-06

Rave: I found the G spot on my computer. A few days ago it started making an odd high pitched noise. I started pushing areas on the CPU and found a spot on the front of the top where I pressed down and it stopped making the noise. Well maybe I should call it the anti-G spot. Anyway I'm happy.

Rave: Lost four pounds, and one inch in the past month. long way to go although.

Rant: I bought an item on ebay from a man from England who put the wrong address on the package which did not arrive because he insisted that the name of my road could not be called Hollow, it has to be Hallow he claims. aargh. I asked him to look it up in the dictionary. It means valley, and some roads are named after valleys. This spelling bee king also got on my back for making a simple spelling mistake. I ca'nt spelled so to good soe get off my bak!

phieaglefan Sep 14th, 2006 06:42 PM

Jorr - LMAO I live with a spelling king -- not!!!

Rave: We leave for Maine tomorrow - coming from Oklahoma, the mid 70's sound awesome and cool!

Rave: We almost had to cancel our trip but DH's work conflicts disappeared.

Rave: I am a liason for an exchange student from Iceland this year. We just got home from taking her and her roomate from Ghana out to dinner. I love hearing about different cultures from people with experience.

No rants tonight!

OO Sep 14th, 2006 06:50 PM

Congrats on the weight loss Jorr. Go go go!!

I've got a major rant I can't wait to get off my chest. Yesterday around 7:30 AM our cable went out, which means no Internet, no TV and no phones (digital phones). I used my cell to call Time Warner to report the outage. Got the typical press 1, press 2 etc, never getting a live person. Seems the outage had already been reported and they "asked" if I wanted to be notified when the system was back up. I did, and input our home phone number to do it. At noon, I got a call...but it wasn't them calling to say the system was up, but a friend. Oh well, things happen, I thought. Well...we did get a call, but guess when????!!! 4:30 in the morning this morning our phone rings, sending us bolt upright on the floor of our bedroom. It is Time Warner telling us the system is back up (although it had been for 16 hours.) Our daughter is pregnant...is she in labor??? Is one of our brothers' sick??? An accident??? Neither of us went back to sleep for the next hour and then it was time to get up anyway. :(

I called them today. We got a $2.10 credit for the system being down for half a day and an apology for an apparent glitch. Big deal...what about the pain and suffering of the moment wondering who was sick/dying/delivering??

This bugs me even more because with my DH in the hotel business, and me active here and lurking on some other travel related boards, I hear almost daily about the petty things people expect full reimbursement for when the most minute thing goes wrong in a hotel stay. Geez louise...the hotel industry has brought this on themselves by giving away the store for the least little thing! I could never work in it! Here's $2.10 for your discomfort now get on with life. LOL :)

semperfid Sep 14th, 2006 07:05 PM

Rave:

Being an American:

I eat big meals

(while 685 third world children starve to death during my dinner hour and every hour).

I sleep in a soft bed with lots of pillows

(while the homeless gather cardboard for their sidewalk beds).

I drive a large SUV – just me in my 5,000lb. vehicle

(while carbon dioxide emissions cause global warming to ruin the earth).

And when I die and get to the Heavenly Gates, I know I’ll have a FastPass to get in – just like at Disney World – while everyone else waits in the stand-by line.

It’s great to be an American!

jorr Sep 14th, 2006 07:20 PM

00, I would have went through the roof. I got a bad news phone call in the middle of the night once. I have never been the same since then at night. I can not believe they could be that stupid.

rosie170 Sep 14th, 2006 07:22 PM

Rant: Semperfid, You're way too serious!

Do us a favor -- when reality knocks, just don't answer!!!

MelissaHI Sep 14th, 2006 09:56 PM

woo hoo, $2.10!! Did you tell them where to put that money?? heee heeeee.

Rant: I am so stressed out, crazy busy with this weekend's activities for the Aloha Festivals. www.alohafestivals.com

It will be a busy week/weekend for me, which means an erratic running schedule.

Rave: I hope this translates into success for our tenants at Aloha Tower Marketplace.

Rave: After this is a slow period, so
Double Rave: I can go to Chicago next Friday, worry free. And from there, I go to Paris.

Rave: Our new mall owner understands why I "need" to go to Paris.

Rave: My boss is out dog-mushing in Alaska.

Totally travel related, if the hall monitor is watching.
:B

bethmac Sep 14th, 2006 10:07 PM

Rant: My husband gets to travel to England on a business trip in October and will be leaving me behind to care for our 4 yr old alone for a week. I was so ticked I asked our son if he wanted to go to Disneyworld for our trip while Dad's on his trip. But DH gets huffy and says, "you can't take him to Disneyworld without me!" Oh, but you can go to England without us?? Anyway, nice to rant.

Rave: I have decided to go on a trip of our own while he is gone, perhaps to New Orleans...not to Disney...I would be punishing myself to take him without dad to help out! But son decided he wants to go to Washington...the state. A far piece from Memphis. He won't know the difference, so maybe I'll tell him we are going the Wash. and just go somewhere closer (and cheaper) instead!

Alisa Sep 14th, 2006 10:30 PM

Rave: Leaving this weekend for a quick trip to Vegas followed by a glorious week on the Big Island!

Rave: I am 6 weeks pregnant with our first baby!

Rant: No pina coladas for me. It's papaya juice on ice!

ElendilPickle Sep 14th, 2006 11:08 PM

Jorr, way to go on the weight loss!

Congratulations, Alisa!

Rave: At the last minute, I entered the NM State Fair bread contest (after skipping last year) and won second place for my whole wheat bread. :-)

Rave: Ds had his cast removed yesterday; now to learn to catch, throw, and bat all over again.

Rave: Oldest dd and her husband have new jobs which pay more and have benefits.

No rants at the moment!

Lee Ann

lcuy Sep 15th, 2006 12:17 AM

Rave: the daughter of my college roommate spent the last week with us, and it got us out and about enjoying our island...beach time, circle island tour, hanauma bay, introducing her to all kinds of ethnic foods, teaching her to surf. The weather was wonderful, and I got the best tan I've had in years!

Rant:
My college senior daughter bought a dog! What is she thinking? She lives in a campus apt, will be moving to Manhattan in January, and we live in Hawaii with all the red tape and testing required to bring in a dog, not to mention the expense!!

Rave: He is an adorable little rat terrier puppy! I can understand why she fell for him, but a dog when you're living in a dorm??? Education does not always equal smarts....

Rave: I've got 4 trips in the planning stages- Boston GTG, Thanksgiving in Idaho, Christmas in Cambodia, and June wedding in San Diego. Life is Good!

Rant: Just missed getting $280 ROUND TRIP tix to Australia this afternoon! Thanks for the heads up, Melissa, but I was too slow!

Wishing for good health and good humor to all fodorites this week...

travel_addict Sep 15th, 2006 03:08 AM

Congrats Jorr & Alisa for your good news!

OO - I just moved and have been having a heck of a time with several utilities companies so I can completely relate to what you went through. In fact, I have to call the gas company again for the 7th time in 2 months today because not only did we get our neighbor's gas bill again, but we now have ours too. *sigh*

Rave: the rain has stopped and this weekend is going to be beautiful.

Rave: My twin 9 year old nephews are staying over here tonight. (They're cute but double trouble!) We are getting up early and walking with my pup in our local Humane Society's fundraiser.

Rave: At the same H.S. Animal Festival, the pup is being entered in three contests - 1) the longest tail wag, 2) the longest kiss, and 3) the costume contest. I think we have a really good chance of winning too - my licking, wagging pup has an Elvis costume! :) Wish us luck!

Rave: going on vacation in a few weeks!

No major rants really, other than I wish I had a smaller butt, more money, and more time. ;)

Hugs to all & have a good weekend!

marigross Sep 15th, 2006 03:16 AM

Happy Friday to all!

Half a rant: I have not been able to pin down a destination for our next vacation! I feel lost without active travel-planning. I want to go to Alaska, DD wants to go to Italy, DH thinks we should skip a year but he could go to Argentina. Mexico seems a good, semi-affordable option....I'm dying to go to Glacier NP...I want to go to Machu Picchu...DD and me want to go to NYC but DH hates cities.

Major Rave: We will figure it out. Everyone is happy and healthy.

StephCar Sep 15th, 2006 03:49 AM

Way to go Jorr on losing a few!

Congrats Alisa—children are a wonderful thing.

Rave: Finished my Cambridge, England trip report! http://tinyurl.com/kag6j

Rave: Was awarded (by mail yesterday) an unrestricted $300 travel voucher from United!!! Thee video monitor was broken on our flight back from England last month. My 2 year old could have cared less about it anyway—what a nice surprise!

Rave: Got to go shopping with the girls last night—and remembered I had a credit at my favorite store. Bonus!.

Rant: Skinny jeans make me look anything but. In fact, I think skinny jeans should come with a warning that says:

CAUTION—skinny jeans should not be worn by anyone who is over 21, weighs more than 100 lbs, has given birth, or is remotely athletic. Skinny jeans may also prohibit your ability to breathe or walk and wearers are advised not to attempt any activities that require mobility when wearing. Those over 35 especially are urged to refrain from breathing more than 5 times per hour when wearing skinny jeans. DO NOT attempt any aerobic activities when wearing skinny jeans, such as bending down or speed-walking. Wear at your own risk.

Rave: Thumb is better and I am off the pain-killers, so the hyperactive me is back with tons of projects this weekend, one of which includes removing a tree in our front yard. It is supposed to be 80 and sunny, perfect!

Rant: My above rave is my DH’s RANT.

Have a sunny weekend everyone!!!!!

annesherrod Sep 15th, 2006 04:20 AM

Rave - Leaving for Dallas shortly to visit college daughter for Parents weekend! I get to see her new apt and where all my money is going!!!

Rant- Getting other childten situated with differnet relatives/friends, getting petsitter, going to the bank, cleaners,.............ughhhh

GoTravel Sep 15th, 2006 04:36 AM

Congrats Alisa and jorr!

Rant: I lost my older kitty on Thursday to the other side of the Rainbow Bridge and my gift of a cat sitter found her while Mr.GoTravel and I were in Charleston and Asheville.

Rant: Mr.GoTravel's broken heart as well as mine.

Rave: We adopted a 5 month old 'teenager' who we named Jack The Cat!

Rave: He is such a joy and is helping heal broken hearts!

Rant: Jen Kitty is adjusting and is starting to realize as a very active 3 year old, she now has someone to play with!

xrae Sep 15th, 2006 04:39 AM

Rave: I'm leaving in a couple hours to pick up my English friend at the airport in Charlotte, then it's on to Hilton Head for the week!

Rant: Um, I'm not exactly packed yet. :-o

travel_addict Sep 15th, 2006 05:01 AM

GoT - I'm so sorry to hear about your kitty. :( Hopefully, Jack the Cat & JenKitty can help ease your hurt a little.

GoTravel Sep 15th, 2006 05:03 AM

StephCar, not really exactly true about the skinny jeans. I love them so much in fact, I've bought two pair!

I think you just need to try several pair on, remember, everyone hated boot cut in the begining.

I'm also over 21 and over 100 pounds!:-D

I wore them last night to a casual cocktail party and got lots of compliments.

angethereader Sep 15th, 2006 05:05 AM

Rave: My sister (3 years older) had her final breast cancer surgery this week and it went really well. She's had 4 outpatient and 3 long involved surgeries in the past year. Whew!!

Rave: She's considered to be completely cancer free and is having no chemo or radiation, just hormone therapy.

Rave: My very first GTG is tonight in Chicago!

Rave: Spending the night at DS's new appartment in Evanston - he just graduated and loves his new job.

Rave: Other DS is coming with us - almost a family reunion!

Rave: DH is getting better and better. I think we're finally out of the woods.

Rave: My 25th wedding anniversary is next week Tuesday, and yes I married at 16.

No Rants this week - the rain finally stopped and the weekend is supposed to be beautiful.

ethel Sep 15th, 2006 05:13 AM

Congrats Jorr! I know what an accomplishment that is.

Congrats Alisa! I'm so happy for you!

GoT--I'm so sorry to hear about the loss of your beloved cat. On 9/29 it will be 1 year since we lost our Hector and I'm still very sad. I miss him so much.

Rave/rant: It's the 2 week countdown until the big day. I'm starting to really stress!

Rave: Parents have gotten us a limo since our other transportation idea fell through.

Rave: Aunt and Uncle have gotten a person to video tape the ceremony as part of their gift to us.

Rave: Dress should be finished and ready for me to pick up in a week.

Rant: I feel like crap today. What a horrible time to get a cold!

RAVE: Puerto Vallarta will see our smiling faces on 10/2. Bring on the margaritas!

Hugs to everyone!

BuffaloGirl Sep 15th, 2006 05:18 AM

Rant: I thought September was early enough to book inexpensive tickets to Florida for Easter break. NOT. I'll have to keep trying.

Rave: After a long dry spell, it looks like I may be able to take a few trips in the coming year!!

Rant: Dad's now in rehab after a stint in the hospital. He'll be in rehab for a while, and then on to assisted living - we hope.

Rave: My brother came home yesterday and is here to help me out for a few days.

Rant: I'm overwhelmed with everything that's happened in the last two weeks, and on top of it we have to clean out my parents house and get it sold, along with a car. Most of it is on my back because my brother lives out of state.

Rave: My brother is still talking about taking me to Italy!!! I'm so excited thinking about it (although it will be quite a while before we actually pull it off). My home and work computer both have Italy backgrounds. :-)

Good thoughts to all....have a great weekend! BG

ronkala Sep 15th, 2006 05:27 AM

Gotravel,

sorry to hear aboutyour cat.

rave.
Leaving for Baton Rouge Tuesday for USS Trathen DD530 reunion.
Group bus tours to St. Francisville and two plantations on Thursday and to NO Friday to visit WWII museum and two hour river cruise. Memorial service Saturday on USS Kidd DD661.

DW and I are taking Natchez Trace Trail home following the reunion.

xrae Sep 15th, 2006 05:32 AM

GoT -- so sorry about your kitty.

Ani Sep 15th, 2006 05:35 AM

Yep-gotta go with Steph on this one:
Grew up in the 80's...do NOT want to revisit that fashion debacle. Skinny jeans dont even look good on models, IMO.

RAVE: 5 weeks left.
RANT: I want my body back-I'm tired of the emotional rollercoasters, not being able to bend over and not having any margaritas.
RANT: Dogowners. Not all of them-but many. If you're too lazy to pick up your dogs crap from someone else's lawn you are too lazy to own a dog. UGH.

bennnie Sep 15th, 2006 05:51 AM

Rave: Remodeling back on track. Plastering starts today, kitchen cabinets are ready to be delivered, granite will be picked out tomorrow. Starting to think about what to cook for our first meal in the new kitchen.

Rant: Finally decided where to go for 20th anniversary but the hotel that I fell in love with is booked.

Congratulations Alisa - hope all goes well.

GoT - sorry for the loss of your pet.

BuffaloG - glad to hear that your dad is recuperating.

StephCar - too funny!

CheBird Sep 15th, 2006 05:55 AM

Steph, instead of skinny jeans, try the slim cut. They have the slim leg opening at the ankle, so they're very current. And they're not sausage tubing like the skinny jeans. Express makes a perfect pair.

I've never posted on the Rants and Raves thread before, but I read it every week. So here goes:

Rave: The Office season 2 and Grey's Anatomy season 2 are both out on DVD now. So it's going to be a nice, lazy weekend of tv-watching for us.

Rave: We're booking Puerto Vallarta for January. We've never been.

Rave: I get to go back to Boston next week for work. One of the great perks of my otherwise very stressful job. I love that town.

Rave: On Fridays, I always look forward to my weekly Saturday morning ritual of going to Barnes & Noble, staking out my favorite chair, ordering my favorite frappucino, and reading for hours. And I will admit, my reading material includes People and Us. Hey, everyone needs some brain candy after a long week!

Happy weekend, everyone! And congrats, Alisa.

mikemo Sep 15th, 2006 06:04 AM

Rave: FedEx - I dropped a custom made iron light fixture/chandelier at Solutions on Wed AM and it arrived at SO's DD's house in Ft Worth, TX at 09:31 on Thursday. Amazing.

Rant/Rave: Nonstop fiestas/noise for the next three weekends.

Semperfid, amen, but being an expat is even better, lol.

De la cuna (con tilde), feliz Dia de Independencia.

Fodorite018 Sep 15th, 2006 06:55 AM

Rave--The rain!!! More please!!!

Rave--DS football season began. He is having a blast and it is so much fun to watch!

Rant--Post Office lost 2 bills I mailed. They suggested I use delivery confirmation so that I would know when they arrived. I had to explain to them that that is useless when they lose my mail, grrr!

jorr--WTG!

Alisa--Congrats! Very exciting!

Lucy--LOL at the puppy:)

LeeAnn--WTG on 2nd place!

GoT--So glad that Jack is giving you joy.

Angethereader--Great news about your sister!

ethel--It is coming up so soon! Enjoy every minute of it.

Buffalogirl--That trip to Italy will be much deserved after all the work/stress you will go through.

Ronkala--I love hearing about those kinds of reunions.

CheBird--Welcome to the FFRR!

kureiff Sep 15th, 2006 07:11 AM

Alisa: Congratulations!

Angethereader: How wonderful for your sister, and Happy Anniversary! ((F))

CheBird: Lol regarding the brain candy. I save those magazines for the eliptical trainer; it makes the exercise a little less painful.

Tiff: You painted such a beautiful picture of fall! (~~)

Rave: It was cold enough for me to wear my new coat this morning. A silly rave, perhaps, but it made me smile.

Rant: Our dream house is for sale. It's a beautiful, old, three story, brick home with a couple of fireplaces, hardwood floors, and several french doors on a double lot within walking distance of my office downtown.

But we're a few years away from being able to buy it. Now why couldn't the owners wait five more years before selling it?? :`(

Rant: It's supposed to freeze tonight and we have so many beautiful unripe tomatoes sitting on the vine.

Rave: I bought some beautiful new yarn last weekend and I'm knitting a scarf for me and a hat for my toddler. Someday, I'll be good at knitting! :^o

Have a good weekend everyone!

JJ5 Sep 15th, 2006 07:34 AM

Rave: Yesterday, the GTG/Chicago was superb as were all the participants. Faina was more than a peach, a sweetheart, and gave each of us a SF heart necklace. I'm wearing it today. Sorry, angethereader and travel addict, that I will miss you or that you couldn't come- but next time in Chicago! DO post, so I can meet you. Swalter & sfowler are stars, period.

Rave: I caught by total serendipity the sale of the pre-broadway showing ticket sales of "Pirate Queen" at the Cadillac Palace on the way back to LaSalle St. Station, and I got my ticket for OCT. 18- FIRST row balcony, center.

Rave/Rant: Downtown Chicago changes. Some are great and some are not. Loved the Orchestra rehearsal I caught at the bandshell in Millenium Park.

Rant/Rave: New styles from behind and on dressy, dressy office workers. Too many layers and too tight- certainly does not look good on majority. And the capri length skinnines everything with dress suits etc. NOT. AND I SAW 3 inch heels on office workers once again. Podiatrists are in for the bucks. But overall, better than the belly look.

Rave: I never threw away my skinny black leggings and Audrey Hepburn black velvet capris. Honestly!

Rave: I was asked for directions twice, so I must look like a natural.

Rave: I could answer the questions and one was a wandering Wacker one, so I feel like I haven't lost my hand entirely.

Rave: So glad I didn't buy that condo now in 1994, as I don't like what they are doing around it at all.

Rant: State Street shopping- has not just gone downhill- but fell in a coalmine.

Rave: Walked over 13 miles just on the downtown part of yesterday's trip and am only in a small bit of pain today.

Rave: New babies and good news.

Buffalogirl, I would love to switch brothers. I have same situation, have since December. My Dad is out of rehab since April (Mom died in July) and home- but will not go into assisted living so we have to run constantly, nor will they let me clear the house. I sure hope your situation gets resolved differently.

Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend. And also lots of travel to help remedy the good-byes we all face.

PamSF Sep 15th, 2006 07:36 AM

GT~Here's to Jack and the joy he will rekindle.

Rave: Our beloved neighbor's house sold without me having to bury a St Joseph statue upside down for good luck.

Rant: Our beloved neighbor's house sold.

Rant: 8 day work week in prep for vacation starting 9/20.

Rave: Vacation starting 9/20.

Have a wonderful Fall weekend everyone. I suggest warm apple cider with a shot of Applejack by the evening fire. We serve these on Halloween while the kiddies tramp about. They are true "comfort".

Florida1 Sep 15th, 2006 07:42 AM

Hello!
It has been a long time since I posted on FFR&R but I wanted to put down a rave for GoTravel and several others who helped me with suggestions for my wedding reception in Key West in January! I was feeling kind of frustrated and now I have good leads!

GoTravel, I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. I am also a cat lover and know how hard it is to lose one. Glad you have others to help cheer you up!

Rave: I am getting married!!! We used frequent flyer miles for a 2-week trip to Spain in April! May have use of a friend's house in Granada, so we'll likely base from there, rent a car and do lots of day trips. I've never been to Spain (neither has fiance), so we are really looking forward to it!

Rave: I am going on Christmas cruise with my fiance and my parents!

Rave: I have a new job (as of May) and I love it so much that going to work isn't really a chore any more!

No real rants, I guess.

Congratulations to those with good news and my thoughts are with all going through difficult times.

Best wishes to everyone for a great weekend!

Fodorite018 Sep 15th, 2006 07:47 AM

Kureiff--I found the best yarn store, down in McMinnville, and spent hours at it yesterday, lol! Right next door to a great restaurant too! You need to go there on your next trip out. Heck, plan a trip just for this store!

angethereader Sep 15th, 2006 08:20 AM

jorr - congrats on the weight loss, hope it will help with the numbers

OO - 4:30 for the call?? WTHeck?

Alisa - Love babies, my three boys have given me more smiles than anyone.

Elendipickle - congrats on the bread (loooove good bread).

lcuy - I'm always amazed at the smart, then really dumb things my college sons do.

steph - I'm torn on the skinny pants. They don't make me look as fat as the dress pants with the pleats in front - don't have a stomach bulge, you do now!

GoTravel - sorry about your kitty.

ethel - Wedding countdown! Enjoy the day, mine was a blur.

bennie - I am jealous of your kitchen remodel - enjoy!

CheBird - Ditto on the welcome. I'm relatively new and have been welcomed with open arms.

gomiki - I've had several sisters weekends (I have four sisters), some were good, some not so good but always memorable. Good for you for taking the time.
On Project Runway (addict) I love Michael, I hope he wins.

BuffaloGirl - I sympathize on all the work for your dad. Had to clean out a duplex with full basement (full of crap) and attic (full of crap) last summer. It's not fun, and can be very sad. I feel for you. It was my FIL and DH couldn't help as he couldn't stand to go back to house where he grew up. I understood and worked all the harder to get it done. Good luck!

JJ5 - Sorry I didn't get to meet you. We'll be at the GTG tonight though.
Also, I cannot wear all those layers without looking three sizes larger, and I'm envious of all the younger women in my office who can.

Florida1 - Congrats on your wedding too!

New Rave: All the good news (mostly) this week.

AnnMarie_C Sep 15th, 2006 08:43 AM

jorr, lol! :-D

OO, don't get me started on Time Warner Cable...grrrrh. I'm impressed you managed to squeeze $2.10 out of them--every time I call they insist the problem is on our end...grrrrh. I told DH I'd like to send them a bill for all the downtime we've endured. They could stand a little competition.
Time Warner Cable = >:-)

Alisa, congratulations! Enjoy a great trip.

ElendiPickle, congratulations on your win! I once won second place in the county fair for brownies...curious because the oven broke half way through the baking process, lol.

GoT, I am so sorry for the loss of your beloved kitty. ((l))

StephCarr, too funny. With all the junk in my trunk there is no way I'm even going to try and squeeze into a pair of skinny jeans--sounds too painful! ;-)

Rave: Rain, glorious rain!

Rant: Mice in the house... specifically, between the first and second floor--how do we trap mice that are between floors? We have humane traps stationed in the attic and garage but so far only one of the stray cats has managed to catch one of them and wasn't she sweet, left it as a gift for us in the middle of our driveway.

Huge Rave: DH wants to buy land in Maryland in anticipation of our move back.
