Freaky Friday Rants and Raves 8-18-06
Rave: blood glucose is slowly going down. Got a 114 the other day.
Rant: The pesky squirrels got all of the walnuts off my tree once again accept for two walnuts which I spent lots of time getting off the tree later. The tree was planted 35 years ago and has had lots of TLC. Last year it started produced walnuts. They stole all but three nuts last year. Ya I know that's what squirrels do. Rodents I say, rodents!! Last year I saw a hawk trying to grab one of the squirrels with a walnut in his mouth. Darn thing got away. |
Raves: Beautiful weather for the outdoor surprise party last weekend..whole family showed up!
Rave: Medication still working for DH! |
Rant: fighting with friend
Rave: starting to patch it up Rant: can't find a coach for my hockey team Rave: think we'll get the votes to hire a pro team to do it |
More...
Rant: Oral surgery on Monday Rave: My doc is great Rave: So is Vicodin :D |
Rave: That Wal-Mart cashier who called the police on those terrorists buying the 80 cell phones which can be used to detonate bombs. It turned out they had more than 1000 cell phones. Whew! Close call! |
Rave- Just finshed a lovley filet Mignon dinner off the grill with DH, we are talking about a trip planned to Seville and Lisbon!!
Rant- My backyard is the pits! We have a persimmon tree that has dropped the rotting things all over the patio. Weeds, dead flowers, and my patio furniture is ancient and about to fall apart - last season for it!! rant- Writing tuiton checks....ughhhh Rave- my daughter who is a Junior in college - studying accounting says that she has been told that Accountants right out of her business school are making around 60K / year!!! Yes. Maybe she can send me a monthly check!! :) |
LOL jorr, I saw three very large squirrels on my balcony this afternoon, they were chattering to each other as they ran around the railings. I have about fifteen walnut trees near me, and we all have to get the walnuts as soon as possible or the pesky squirrels grab all of them. Rodents they are, but they are amusing..well some of the time. Congratulations on your blood glucose test..keep taking good care of yourself1
somerknot, I hope your DH gets better and brandi I hope your dental problems will be over with after Monday. Raves: Lots of them including a lovely time in SF this last Saturday. Rants: So many very dear friends who are beautiful and special people that are going through dreadful heartbreaks. I wish there was something I could do to ease their pain but unfortantly I can't except to pray and hold some very good thoughts for them. |
Rave: Brunswick stew. Made with squirrel.
Rant: Travel restrictions. g'day |
Rave: My son turned 11 Thursday.
Rant: He fell off his bike Tuesday and fractured his left forearm slightly. :-( He'll be in a cast for about four weeks. Rant: His Little League coach finally called to let us know fall ball practice is starting. He will probably miss the season unless it goes longer than I think it will. Lee Ann |
Rave: U.S. District Judge Anna Diggs Taylor ruled Thursday in Detroit that the Bush administration's warrantless surveillance program violates the rights to free speech and privacy as well as the separation of powers.
Rant: The Administration appears to argue that the president has the "inherent power" to violate laws. (If the ruling holds, may they end up in jail with the likes of those from WorldCom and Enron) Rant v.2: The media in America seem to think the JonBenet story is more important than this ruling. |
Rave: My boss & I got our photo in the paper this week.
Rant: People thought he was my boyfriend. Ewwwww. Rant: The restrictions on liquids in carryons. When I travel, I often buy a few bottles of wine to bring home and just carry it on. Rave: I guess this means I'll have to buy cases to ship home. ;) |
Melissa
Rave: I guess this means I'll have to buy cases to ship home. A perfect example of seeing the positive side of things :D I don't know where to start with my ranting and raving tonight. Ranting that there are people out there who will make the most wonderful of parents and all that is missing is that baby. Ranting that a couple would go through so many years of their lives together and now when it is a time when they can relax and enjoy themselves, illness comes along and frightens and threatens them. With all the stress and upset in the world, I Rave that there are so many people doing such wonderful good and kind and selfless acts every day. I Rave that a wife who nurses her sick husband and worries herself sick, still makes me laugh at her little jokes. I Rave that my daughter has been so sick and called me today to say that we can call her Lumpy now instead of Puffy. I Rave that my husband is so good. I Rave that my friends are too. I Rave that I do not know what made me so lucky. ((F)) |
HI!
Rant/Rave: Just returned last night from a month in England. We had the trip of a lifetime, with long weekend trips to Ireland and Germany. A trip report is forthcoming! While it is nice to be home, I already miss England terribly. Rant: Travel through LHR yesterday. It tested my patience to the limits. I even got yelled at by an old lady, it was swell. Huge Rave: My children. At the ages of 2 and 4 they travel better than some adults. I really think I am raising little travellers!!! This was my 4 year old's 3rd trip abroad and the second time around for my 2 year old. They did so well the entire month--whether it was on trains or planes. Even yesterday with severe restrictions for toys and food they did wonderfully on the 9 hour flight. And, I had strangers constantly tell me how well behaved they were--I have to admit even I was surprised! I kept waiting for a big meltdown at some point but it never happened. And, what is most important, is I really enjoyed travel with them--my 4 year old was SO into all the castles and has already requested a suit of armour for Christmas. (Now where will Santa ever find that???!) Rant: Jet lag. Both me and my 2 year old are up at 4am today. Daddy takes after my 4 year old and has no adjustments. Happy Friday everyone! |
Major Rant: My mother is getting ready to do some work on a building she owns and gave notice to her tenants that they need to empty out the apartments by end of October. One of the tenants (major charity case that has emotionally manipulated my mother for years) replies that the only way she can get the money to move out is if she doesnt pay rent anymore. This includes two months were she paid only a portion of the rent (thus legally recording her intention to pay), plus August, plus September and October.
AND MY MOTHER AGREED!!!!! aaaauuuggghhhh This lady (allegedly legal resident without a working permit and her citizen son) has scammed my mother out of thousands of dollars of unpaid rent. She does not want to apply for public housing. I am sure that the lady will not leave because she really does not have many alternatives. Yes, I am a cynic. Our lawyer and I cannot get my mother to understand what is happening and how she is being used. My mother feels SO SORRY for this lady! If the tenant doesnt move out on her own we are facing at least six months of a very complicated eviction process (as it involves a minor) before we can even start remodeling the building and getting rents again. Whenever I try to intervene my mother overrules me so there is nothing I can do!!!! These rents and a low SS are my mother's income and right now she is not getting enough to get on by without skimping (and help from her children). Rave: Even if she is TOTALLY financialy irresponsible, my mother is such a trusting, loving, caring person! Rave: there are so many real problems out there that having mine restricted to ones that can be solved with money, is a blessing. Cyber hugs and kisses to all in need. TGIF. |
Rave: High School football season (or at least the inner squad scrimmage) starts tonight!
Rant: T-storms may put a damper on the night. Rant: School starts next week. Rave: It was a great (but fast) summer. |
jorr, sorry to hear your nuts were stolen. :-O
LoveItaly, your friends are lucky to have you. Sometimes we feel there is nothing we can do for friends going through hard times, but being there for them is a big help. ((L)) Lee Ann, sorry your son got hurt but having a cast is cool when you're a kid!! :-) marigross, that's a shame about your mom. I hope it all gets resolved soon. StephCar, welcome home. Rave: As some of you know, our new car got smashed from behind by an irresponsible tow truck driver. After some hassle with the driver, his insurance company is going to cover the damage. The parts needed for repair have arrived, so Monday evening we will check DH's baby into the Honda Hospital to correct the little boo-boo on it's butt. OK, it's a big boo-boo, but I'm glad we won't have to look at it much longer. Rave: Everything Scarlett said. That sums it up for me. Happy weekend, all. |
RAVE: PM, you are right, Scarlett said it beautifully and I will add one more ditto!
RAVE: Celebrating the big OH with friends at lunch today. RAVE: Celebrating the big OH with 100 of my classmates from high school. We are meeting in Charleston for several days of dancing, eating (OK, there may be some drinking) and sharing good times. Rock on. RAVE: I can feel fall in the air this morning. RANTS: Snarky, rude people. Go Away! |
Rave: Finally have my biopsy scheduled. The waiting has been killing me.
Rave: My sons. Sometimes they have no idea what to do with/for their mother. Rant: Youngest goes back to school in a week and all the little arguments (about nothing) have started - his separation strategy. A simple "goodbye" would work nicely. ...and yes, what Scarlett said...so true.... Thinking of those going through such difficult times. |
rave: we go to toronto tomorrow! the hotel should be great.
rave: had a killer w'end out on the north fork last w'end. you should have seen the sunset!! it always is a well needed change of pace from the city. and we even saw a meteor shower!! rave: great dinner out in soho this week. rave: soooooo ready for fall. rave: justice. rave: bf's birthday is next week! :-D |
P_M, you made my day with your expression of sympathy for Jorr ;;)
Rave . Watching the hot air balloon drifting over the valley after taking off from Woodstock. Rant: The recent "macaca" and "welcome to America" comments made by senator George Allen R-VA and 2008 presidential hopeful toward the American citizen of Indian descent. |
Rave: House remodel is chugging along - lots of decisions made and many more to be made. But we've decided on the cabinets, appliances, flooring for the kitchen. Still need lighting. Found the perfect bathroom vanity too - after looking at hundreds on line.
Rave: Vacation next week. Best wishes to all Fodorites coping with illness, waiting for test results etc... Be strong and all will be well. |
stw, best of luck on that biopsy!!
ronkala, glad you appreciated my sympathy for jorr. I hope jorr will take comfort in the fact that his nuts will grow back next year. :-d Wishing the best to all who are dealing with tough times. |
Sooo happy it's FRIDAY! ((#))
Rave: Checking out (what sounds like) a great restaurant "Peasant" in NYC tomorrow night with friends. Rave: Bottling 2005 Vintage "Budbrew" with Budman ((B)), Hunnym and friends on Sunday! Will be lots of fun! Should my share be called "Trishbrew"? Rave: DH accepted a new job closer to home for more $$. I hope he'll be happy with the change. I primed him for negotiating as much vacation time as possible at the new place! :) Rave: Weather in NJ has been perfect lately! How did it get to be halfway through August already? Jorr - Sorry about your nuts. (P_M you are hillarious.) Echoing Scarlett's thoughts too. Have a fun & relaxing weekend everyone! Trish |
Rave: Finally registering on Fodors after 'lurking' nearly a year!
Rant: Tired of Summer...come on, Fall! Jorr: Perhaps you can import West Nile Virus into your area...it seems to be taking care of the squirrels in Boise. Might be a bit drastic to save your walnuts but the squirrel population is rapidly decreasing! |
Rave--I get the weekend to myself! DS/ DS are going climbing. DD is headed to WA. What WILL I do with myself? :D
Best wishes for everyone going through tough times and medical stuff. |
Rave: You are all so funny and welcoming!! I'm new to this forum (usually lurk in the Asia forum).
Rant: My husband's meds keep needing adjusting and he gets sick every time. It's driving me nuts!! Rave: Tomorrow is 29 years since our first date. Rant: He doesn't feel good so he doesn't want to do anything. Rave: The weather is beautiful so maybe I can just talk him into sitting around the fire pit with friends. Have a great weekend everyone!! Is P_M now referred to as "No nuts?" |
Rave: Reading this board always seems to make me realize my life isn't so bad. I really have a whole lot to be thankful for! At the same time, my heart goes out to all of those with pain, suffering, loss, illnesses and scary times.
Rave: Scarlett's post - well said! Rave: The number of boxes to unpack is finally decreasing! No rants today! It's going to be a beautiful day here and I plan on enjoying it! Have a good weekend, everyone! |
Two nuts left! Oh Jorr, how funny!
|
Hugs to all going through tough times. May all those sick get well!
Rant: Our 2005 Hyundai Sonata needed new rotors and brake pads. The dealer wanted to charge $500 because the warranty was 12,ooo miles/1 yr. We've had the car for a little over a year (brand new when we bought it) and it has 25,000 miles. I'm sorry but the rotors shouldn't have warped this soon. Rave: Dad and fiance were able to do it themselves and, so far, have saved us around $300. Major Rave: A father who seems to know how to do anything and seeing him teach my fiance skills. I love watching them work together! Rave: Going shopping tomorrow! Happy weekend everyone! |
Jorr: Its always difficult when someone/something messes with your nuts. My apologies;)
RAVE: 9 weeks left! RANT: I'd normally be booking tix to England right about now...I can feel the itch overcoming me. RAVE/RANT: My good friend StephCar has returned from England...I feel so sorry she had to leave but happy that she is home! |
Rave: throwing surprise bday party for DS tonight and I am pretty sure he has no idea!! We have about 25 people showing up plus his favorite uncle. I can't wait to see his face. His bday was last month but I planned this after missing his 13th bday because I was in Paris w/ DD- hope this makes up for it :)
Rant: back to work next week. School starts the 30th and I had to change class rooms again. What a pain! I wish I could skip the prep work and just meet my little guys. This is a rant because it means summer is officially over :( Rave: Life is good. I don't really have anything to seriously complain about. I am blessed. Prayers to those facing medical and personal issues. Have a wonderful Friday everyone!! |
Ditto MizScarlett. Somethings are just so heartbreakingly unfair.
Rant or Rave take your pick: Still trying to find out Geraldo's take on Jon Benet Ramsey's killer. The curiousity is painful. Running my 14 miles this evening so I don't have to get up in the morning. Rant: My @#$%^ roots. I hate aging and all the upkeep. It seems every time I turn around I have to go get my color done. Rant: My pedicure has also gone to the dogs. A runner's feet is a thing of horror. I know what I'll be doing ALL DAY TOMORROW. Sigh. Rant: I am hungry starving all the time. Does everyone know that it is possible to put on weight training for a marathon? Rave: Got my airline tickets for the marathon for $198 round trip each! |
Rant: Just when I think I can't possibly get one more invitation to something that requires me to put money in a card.......I get another wedding invite!
Rave: People like us enough to invite us to their celebrations. At least, I think that's the reason! Rant: Gynecologist mentioned the word "hysterectomy" to me during a follow up office visit Wednesday. We're going to wait a few months and see what's going on first. Rave: Their are worse things than the "H" word. Rant: My Vermont brother has all kinds of time to travel....Europe, out west, etc. but has no vacation time left to visit our elderly and sick parents here in Buffalo. Then, my mother calls me constantly to complain about it. Rave: They're lucky to have me! Rant: My husband has to work in Attica Prison next week (as an outside contractor). This will make him VERY cranky, which will then make me cranky. He gets prinsoners assigned to assist him. Many times he has to work in the prisoner areas and only has a guard with a night stick with him. He doesn't like it. I don't blame him. Rave: At least he doesn't have to be there every day like a prison guard. I can't even imagine it. Have a great weekend everyone!!! |
Rave: Back at FFRR after a few weeks layoff.
Rave: Family vaca was fun--plenty of bonding time and lots of good memories. Rant: Snarky folks who seem to delight in stirring up this board. Shoo fly! Rant: Sent my baby girl off to high school an hour ago. We'll have a senior and a freshman this year--didn't I just take them to kindergarten?????? Rave: That I still have our basset at home to keep me company. Naughty girl just stole a plastic razor from the bathroom and ran to the backyard to chew it up. Am sure the neighbors look forward to me tearing outside on a regular basis to 'rescue' some item that Maggie has chosen for her own :-) |
PM, I tried so hard not to say my nuts in that rant because I just Knew somebody would comment on my nuts. Notice how I said the walnuts, two walnuts, and nuts. LOL. :D
The Bucket Woman, Please post the recipe for that Brunswick squirrel stew. I hope it tastes nutty, as in Walnuts. "Squirrels are rodents with good PR" |
Rave: Scarlett's post- best of the year.
Ultimate rant about sickness, immobility, handicaps and pain. Acceptance of these as long term is hard to view and harder to experience. Rave: Beautiful weather and good crops Rave: Kind people who give their time for a quick hello or contact Rave: New beginnings as so many start an academic year at every level Rant: That money goes to money, and excess time and freedom to those who least share their surplus of it with those who have next to nothing of either. Rant/rave: My squirrels in MI that have so many surplus nuts that they crack them and throw the meats at each other and any bird or critter who comes along. (Shells of which get caught in all the board edges of the humongous deck and need to be pried out.) A sincere hope that the illness and disappointment of others is short and the outcomes best they can be. And also great sympathy for the landlord's daughter and the landlord too. They are the people who hold the world up and get the least credit. Rave: Those in the UK and Pakistan who listened, paid attention and were busybodies enough to catch the terrorists before they blew up 15 airplanes and 1000s of innocent people. BIG BIG RAVE: Getting to meet others who love travel face to face, who were previously only names online. |
Rave - We finally have a move-in date for our new house. Rant - MikeT
|
Marigros: Good luck to you and your mom.
STW: Good thoughts for your biopsy. P_M: I love your posts. They always make me laugh! :-D Scarlett: Such a nice post. Let me add my "ditto." Rave: The rain we've been getting has knocked down several fires. Rave: Camping with my husband and daughter tomorrow night. ((F)) Best wishes for a good weekend! |
Big hug to all with health and other problems!
Hooray to all who have reasons to celebrate! RAVE: GTG last weekend, with Neopolitan, LoveItaly, Cobbie, Marylin RAVE: a Fodorite, who's become a dear friend, will pick me up tomorrow for a girls' day out (a report will follow!) Rant: hammering is going on now as I type, the administration "forgot" to tell us they'll be installing a new copier Rant: lost a pin off my purse which has a great centimental value RAVE: I knew this could happen, so I had a spare one RAVE: the kids took us out for dinner for no reason RAVE: no major rants |
I feel so bad today after a sleepless night. Red a horror book yesterday.
Which horror book, you ask? My check-book! (just telling a joke, maybe it will brighten up somebody's day) |
