Times three!

My niece is going through the same thing regarding celebrating Halloween in her Catholic school. They are not allowed to dress up this year because of it's "paganism". I feel so bad for all those little tykes. Now both I and my MIL both attended catholic grade schools, and we both always dressed up for Halloween, I don't get it. So instead on Monday they are dressing up for "Nevada Day" where the children wear cowboys and cowgirl outfits.

Hi travelingwifey, my daughter went to Catholic School and they always wore costumes also, had a costume parade at the school and a party etc.

Well one way or another our holidays are being taken away it seems. Sad.

They can only be taken if you let go. My little Angel will be an Angel this year. Not a care for the politics of it. Had to wind the straps a few times so her pretty, feathery wings wouldn't scrape the pavement. They care not about the correctness of it all. Just pass the Baby "roots"!

Happy weekend to everyone and I hope Bamakelly will post a picture of the "Little Lion" and any of you who will have your child in costume. It would be fun to see.

We need a FFF GTG! But where? Molvania? Actually I'd be willing to host, but then you all have to come to me!

Thanks jorr for keeping us all connected with this post every week!

Scarlett, do you have reindeer to go with gyp's "sleigh"? ;)

LoveItaly, I was raised in a typical church. I remember as a small kid our Halloween parties in the church basement. We made the kitchen into a haunted house with all the traditional Halloween "scary" stuff. I can not believe that so many people have gone so far to the right that this is now somehow harmfull to children. to my knowledge nowbody in my sunday school class turned into a witch, a vampire, or a grave robber in their adult life. One ended up in and out of prison half his life but that may be because he asked the minister what a unick (spelling?) was during a church service. LOL

Rant: Exxon/Mobil made nearly $10 billion in Profits during the past three months. I can not wait for the day when ethenal made from corn catches on in the rest of America like it has here. The profits will stay in America and out of the hands of the energy giants.

sunbabe Oct 29th, 2005 09:22 AM

Rave: high school football playoffs!

Rant: people who b!tch about things they don't believe in to the point that it ruins traditions for others. Heck, let's cancel all holidays, school dances, extra curricular activities, etc.

Rave: beautiful fall weather we're having. The leaves are spectacular.

Rant: trying to decide where to take a short trip after Christmas and finding that the places I'd like to see aren't affordable. $)

Came across this today...

The history of costumes on Halloween

"Halloween is an annual celebration, but just what is it actually a celebration of? And how did this peculiar custom originate? Is it, as some claim, a kind of demon worship? Or is it just a harmless vestige of some ancient pagan ritual?

The word itself, "Halloween," actually has its origins in the Catholic Church. It comes from a contracted corruption of All Hallows Eve. November 1, "All Hollows Day" (or "All Saints Day"), is a Catholic day of observance in honor of saints. But, in the 5th century BC, in Celtic Ireland, summer officially ended on October 31. The holiday was called Samhain (sow-en), the Celtic New year.

One story says that, on that day, the disembodied spirits of all those who had died throughout the preceding year would come back in search of living bodies to possess for the next year. It was believed to be their only hope for the afterlife. The Celts believed all laws of space and time were suspended during this time, allowing the spirit world to intermingle with the living.

Naturally, the still-living did not want to be possessed. So on the night of October 31, villagers would extinguish the fires in their homes, to make them cold and undesirable. They would then dress up in all manner of ghoulish costumes and noisily paraded around the neighborhood, being as destructive as possible in order to frighten away spirits looking for bodies to possess."

Rant:This is also what I remember of the holiday which is why I am so surprised my niece's school is not allowing a celebration this year.

mikemo Oct 29th, 2005 09:50 AM

Rant: jorr, ethanol from corn is way inefficient (from a price, energy equivalent, and "global warming" perspective), but it gets votes for "W's" friends in fly over land.
What's wrong with legal corporate profits? Buyers of goods and services and shareholders/owners can always vote with their "feet".

Rave: Kal, great pics! Do you all really run marathons? I'm happy to be able to walk up and down the hills here.

Rave: Four pound Flounder - we called that a "doormat" when I was a kid.

Isn't Molvania where the Carringtons were attacked at the wedding?

Dr Mike,
ME??? MARATHONS!!!!
:)):)):))

I've been in triathlons...eating drinking and sleeping but running...no way!!!!
Mrs Kal is a vet of 3 real ones and numerous 1/2 marathons and 12,10,5ks.

The only thing I run anymore is my mouth. :-"

G'lou-I'm trying to get Rooster Jerky on Atkin's approved list.((Y))

Trish, Molvania is a fabulous idea! Interested parties should bring with them a good pair of boots, insect repellent and a set of emergency flares. ...

Kal, LOL!

Hi jorr, I finally found a painting contractor who is licensed, insured, pleasant and local and has been in business quite awhile.

Did you tell me the best paint for the exterior of a house is SherwinWilliams Super Paint? I wrote down what you said but now I can't find my note, sigh! Thanks!

Catching up on three weeks' worth of raves, but I'll keep them short:

Rave: Two great trips to Indianapolis and Glorieta the last two weekends. I loved the Lord of the Rings museum exhibit; if any of you have family who likes the films, they will enjoy this show! Glorieta was gorgeous and we got to spend an afternoon in Santa Fe.

Rave: Non-Fodor's GTG in Indianapolis with a bunch of online friends. Even though we ate at the Cheesecake Factory ;-) I had a wonderful time.

Rave: Got last-minute tickets to the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra last night. It was an interesting concert featuring Stravinsky's Symphony of Psalms, Saint-Saens' 2nd Piano Concerto played by Miguel del Aguila, and excerpts from "Time and Again Barelas," an opera del Aguila is composing for Albuquerque's tricentennial celebration next April. It sounds like it will be very good.

Rave: Off to Carlsbad in two weeks!

Rave: Oldest DD and her husband are planning to comefor Thanksgiving. Hoping he can get the time off!

Rave: Finally found a Halloween costume for DS yesterday; he wanted to be a Star Wars clone trooper but settled for Batman instead. :[

Rejoicing with all of you who rejoice, praying for those with health concerns.

LoveItaly, the paint is called Duration and is about double the cost. I recommend it.

Mikemo, I do not understand what you mean. Farmers get the same price per bushel no matter what the corn is used for. The more ethenol which is produced and sold the greater the demand for corn. The price at the pump for ethanol is significantly cheaper than gas from oil. Profits from Ethanol stay in the US instead of countries like Saudi Arabia. We can control our own destiny. Fly Over Country can become Fly To Country. Its a win win win win win situation.

Also, corn creates oxygen for the earth. Oil does not. Oil spills destroy ocean environments. Corn fields feed many species of animals. Fields which produce corn have been cultivated for many generations. Drilling for Oil in Alaska destroys an environment and ecology which has been there for thousands of years. Corn is renewable. Oil is not.

Make that a win win win win win win win win situation.

Jorr, thank you, this time I have written the paint recommendation down again and put it in my file. I appreciate your help. Best wishes.
