Freaky Friday Rants and Raves 10-07
Rant: Snow this early. 12" with high winds. =-o
Rave: Great snow removal teams. We will have more warm days ahead before real winter. C:-) Rant: The temps in a few months will get to minus 20F. :O Rave: Only one more lawn mowing left after the snow melts! =:-) Rave: Over 58,000 sky miles on my credit card. :D Rant: The credit card miles are on Delta. The miles might not be honored because Delta is in trouble. :O |
Well, guess I get to be the first poster (unless someone else can type faster then I can).
Rave: I found the earring that was part of the set of an Italian gold hoop earring that my daughter and SIL gave me last year. Rant: I was sick about the "lost" earring for 24 hours. Rave: I realized with all the problems in the world a lost earring was not the end of the world. I got my priorties straght, thank goodness. Rave: Beautiful autumn weather here in Vacaville. It is such a joy. Rant: Like jorr, my ff miles are with Northwest. Hope Northwest keeps flying! Rant: I found out yesterday my health insurance company will no longer be offering their coveage as of 12-31-05. Rave: After spending hours on the telephone and websites (don't think this is a rave, LOL) I found a health insurance co. that will supply coverage for my same doctor and medical facilitie for a whole lot less then what I have been paying). Rant: A company that told my grandson they would hire him and not to look elsewhere for work. And then at that last moment said "sorry, we have hired someone else". Rave: My grandson who keeps plugging along and although he was so upset about this company and what they pulled he is keeping his spirits up. Happy weekend everyone, and especially to you jorr. Hugs to all! |
Hi jorr..
Snow..amazing. I might get to see some of that this year again :) Hope you get your mileage honored. Love, I lost a favorie earring this week too :( made me sad, but I will make a necklace and use the earring that is left in it. Rave: Living in Portland. Rave: My son will leave Japan next spring and after a little wandering, will come back to live in the US. No Rants :D |
RAVE: CHICAGO WHITE SOX
WEIRD RAVE: LoveItaly and Scarlett, have you read my thread of earlier this evening where I detailed the event of my lost SOX earring? It was way before this first post here. It's on the Chicago GTG thread, I think. Is that weird or what! And I actually chalked it up to being lost forever and didn't think I would find it; then FOUND it AFTER cleaning the jet tub and it was not 3 inches from the drain. Nothing but raves: Last Saturday I had the nicest day with my all my girls and I will never ever forget it. Rave: For Kathy who is running the marathon Sunday- what a girl! RAVE: Cool fall weather just blew in and I LOVE IT. Most tomatoes and peppers got picked tonight. I'll be a raving maniac if I continue. I'm out of here as I need to get some sleep. Hope all have a great weekend and that all who have sickness, decline or bad tidings find some peaceful moments in the fray. |
Tired, yes! No, the earring story was in my ditching work thread.
|
Rant: What's with Fodors the past few days?? I've had so many problems postiing, and i t 's s o o o o s l o w ! ! !
Rave: my two beautiful baby grandsons, well one's not so much a baby anymore, he's going to be celebrating his 3rd birthday this weekend, but both are healthy and smart and beautiful - how did I get to be so lucky :-x (and I get to babysit them a lot too!!) Rant: Still no job in sight. Rave: Happy Thanksgiving (Canada) - Yes - a long weekend!!! No snow here in Edmonton (Canada), just lots of wind and cloud (and almost frosty at night), and the golden leaves are blowing around all over the place. It doesn't pay to rake - more leaves appear minutes after the job is done!! |
Rave: glad that most lost jewelry found it's way home.
Rant: I wish my own lost jewery would find it's way home. Lost a whole little satin bag of earrings last trip to the Bay Area. Rave: heading down to Orinda in the East Bay tomorrow to spend the weekend with my older brother and SIL. Going out to Livermore on Saturday to the wineries: Concannon, Wente, and Fenestre. Nice drive, beautiful area, much quieter than Napa or Sonoma. Just packed up a bunch of cheese from Trader Joes, interesting crackers, pickled herring in sour cream (my Scandanavian ancestry coming through here) and other stuff for our picnic on Saturday. I had to mention the herring: I'm taking a count of how many eewwwws I get. LOL No more rants, I'm too tired to rant anymore and besides I am very blessed in my life so I should have NO reason to rant. Have a great weekend everyone. |
Hi Crefloors, have a beautiful time with your family. The weather should be beautiful! Enjoy every moment.
What is it with all of us losing jewerly? Well I did find mine, clever idea that you have Scarlett. JJ5, glad you found yours. I was so happy to find my earring. It was so sentimental and besides that I loved it. Crefloors, I am so sorry about your losing your little bag of earrings. That is sad. Happy weekend everyone and hopefully no more Fodorites will lose any more jewerly this weekend. |
Lost earrings seem to be a theme! Most of mine were packed and shipped across the country when we moved 2 weeks ago; I had the pair I was wearing but that was all. I had no idea which box, carton, suitcase, etc. they were packed in, but a couple of days ago I actually found them safe and sound. Put them on a shelf, awaiting the arrival of our new bedroom furniture when I figured I could find a permanent home for them. New furniture arrived. Couldn't find the earrings anywhere. Got panicky because I threw out a bunch of stuff yesterday morning - did I throw out my earrings too? Finally found them in a pile of underwear.
Rave: our new home is shaping up nicely and we love it here in Victoria! No rants. Life is good. :) |
Rave: No snow in New England...yet.
Rant: I know it is coming as the leaves are beginning to change. Rave: I am have a great group of students this year. Rant: A couple of them have some seriously wacky parents. Rant: Our school district is coming apart at the seams. Huge budget issues forcing many cuts. It's very sad. Rave/Rave: Long weekend with rain expected should force me to do some shopping and get some seriously overlooked projects done in my house. |
Rave: Finally, some much-needed rain in Northern Virginia
Rant: I couldn't drive in to work with the top down this morning. |
Rave: Beautiful fall weather with rain that we so desperately need.
Double Rave: It's supposed to clear off in time for the Tennessee vs. Georgia game tomorrow. GO VOLS!!!!!!!!!!! |
Rave: Leaving tomorrow for five business days in Strasbourg followed by four vacation days in Paris.
Rant: Have to sit through hours and hours of meetings before I can have my first encounter with the City of Lights... |
Rave: DD and I are going to see DS at college today.
Rave: The colors in the UP of MI are supposed to be peak, so will make the 8 hour drive go faster. Rant: 8-hour drive to see DS at college. Rave: Finally back to fall weather. 80"s were nice in the summer but a bear in the classroom. Rant: Testing, testing, testing! Spent three days this week and it will be four days next week giving the MEAP. That means everything else is on hold. Rave: Beautiful fall weather- cold and sunny for the week-end. |
Rave: Brother in law, his 5 year old son and BIL's friend are alive! Last Sat. they were sailing in St. Joe bay (Cape San Blas area) in the FL panhandle when the boat capsized. They righted it but in the confusion BIL forgot to loosen the main sail and the boat took off. BIL hung on to a rope attached to the boat for as long as he could but finally had to let boat go. He was also holding on to his son. By then they were far away from his friend and couldn't see him.
Friend and son were wearing life jackets but not BIL. They were in the bay for over four hours before someone picked them up. Fortunately they were able to find his friend pretty quickly. They were taken to the hospital. The five year old was in the begining stages of hypothermia but other than that they came out OK. Rave: My son is alive! He, his roommates and some friends were held up at gunpoint in their apartment last week. It has been a scarey couple of weeks but it is always better to find something to rave about even in a "rant-worthy" situation. |
My gosh Sunshinesue! Your family has really had some close calls!!! So glad they all came away healthy!
Rant: None this week. Rave: I, my daughter and granddaughter have pedi/mani appointments tomorrow morning. Girls day out celebrating granddaughters Homecoming! How fun. Hope all Fodorites have a great weekend. |
Rave: Each day gets a little easier to cope with the loss our beloved Hector.
Rant: Nothing will ever fill this void in my heart Rave: Getting married in, now, less than a year. Rant: Planning a wedding is HARD!!! :O SunshineSue--wow, I can't believe what you've gone through recently. You're right though, it's always better to find the rave in it. Have a nice weekend everyone! |
Sunshinesue: Yikes! I'm glad everyone is OK!
Scarlett & LoveItaly: St. Anthony, the patron saint of lost things, always helps me find things. (You don't have to be Catholic to ask him for help)! He helped me find my check book last week! :-) Rave: Yesterday, Buffalo NY, 80 degrees, sunny, warm.....a beeeeeautiful day! Rant: Today, Buffalo NY, 58 degrees, cloudy, chilly.....not a beeeeeeautiful day! Rave: I don't have to work on Monday. A three day weekend for me! Rave: I bought a Christmas present online yesterday. This is early for me. I'm even gonna wrap it when it arrives. Rave: I think I'm going to plan a weekend in Toronto, cuz I don't have any travel plans in the near future. Have a great weekend everyone! |
SunshineSue, I can only imagine how terrifying that was, but thank God indeed that he is alive!!
I am not Catholic, but a few times I have been desperate to find something of great importance and I called upon St. Anthony. He always comes to my rescue. But I try not to bother him unless it's really, REALLY important. LoveItaly, how awful for your grandson!! As a job-seeker I can understand how upset I would be if that happened to me. Ethel, may the healing continue. Rave: I haven't lost any jewellrey lately. Rant: Job search still slow, which is causing stress. Rave: I still have 8 months left on my current job. Rave: Funny threads on Fodors give me a much needed laugh every day and Fodor friends give me support and put a smile on my face. :-) Rave: Our first blast of autumn has finally hit Austin!! Just a few days ago the heat was still unbearable, but today it's chilly and I'm actually wearing long sleeves. This weather is so refreshing. Have a happy and safe weekend, all!! |
SunshineSue, when I was reading your post, the part about your son caught my eye immediately and I must have overlooked the part about the boating accident. GEEZ, that sounds terryfying as well!! But the glass is half full. Your family has has so much trauma, but everyone is alive and well. Whew!!
|
Rant: What is up with that stupid "I'm Cleanin' The Litter Box" commercial?
Rave: 20 Miles tomorrow! Rant: Tropical Storm Tammy is dumping rain on us still. Laugh Of The Day: Jorr got snow and I'm spending Sunday on the beach! |
Rave: The leaves are almost peak here in Maine. :D
Rant: We have to head home to Florida tomorrow! :( Rave: Here the weather is finally cooler at home. :D SunshineSue- OMG...what an experience you've had. Glad everything turned out okay. =-o |
Count me in on that one, GoTravel. I read his post and thought, "What? SNOW??!!" :o
Rave: Slightly cooler temps and lots of nice rain lately...it's almost feeling "fallish." :) The island is green and my cistern is full. Rave: Looking forward to our trip to Venice, Italy in another 16 days. The cold, grey, foggy, romantic weather will be a nice change from the constant sunshine. ;) Rave: It's Friday and I've not had to work overtime once this week. Rave: My younger sister just celebrated her four year wedding anniversary yesterday. Gosh time flies. Rant: The Astros lost last night. :( Rant: My family members in east Texas still can't get home after Hurricane Rita. At least they have their lives, though. Sunshinesue, I can't imagine how relieved you must be! Thank goodness! Scarlett, you must be excited about your baby boy coming home. Ethel, belated sympathy for your loss. P_M, good luck in the continuing search. Have a wonderful weekend all my Fodorite friends. :) |
Rave: Weekend in Hudson Valley area with family!
Rant: Its going to rain. Rave: Planning trip to NYC with friends. Rant: One friend is going to back out because of finances. Long commutes and high gas prices are eating up what little discretionary income she has. Rave: School district did pretty well with MCAS testing. Elementary school continues to be one of the best in the state. Rant: See Eeva's comments above. Its hard to figure out what is going on. Financial mismanagement seems to be at the root of it all. No one seems to know where all the money goes. Rant: Daughter's middle school field trip was to a prison. I saw no educational purpose in bringing young very innocent kids to such a setting. She wasn't allowed to go. Same prison is in the news this week because the employees are posting horrible racist comments about the sheriff on a website. I originally objected exposing my daughter to criminals. I guess I should have been worried about the guards as well. Safe travels to everyone this weekend. Go Sox! |
I guess I haven't spent enough time on this site to realize the problems it is having. WOW...talk about craziness. I refreshed the US page, and it went back to 0714 in the morning...what?
|
Someone throw something at BuffaloGirl for starting her Christmas shopping.
Aaarrrggghhh!!!! |
Rave: a bit of drizzle the last three AMs after a dry rainy season.
Rant: SO and I were left on the cutting room floor in this AM's NYT's on line article about SMdA real estate. Rave: Hardly ever gets below 40 F here in the winter and LP here will be significantly less expensive than natural gas and home heating oil in NA. Rave: SO is in RI enjoying early Fall. Rave/Rant: W's choice of Harriet Miers for the Supremes: he foxed the liberal dems and the control freak radical right. If confirmed, she'll join Earl Warren, John Marshall, Byron White, Harlan Fiske Stone, William O. Douglas and Louis Brandeis as a Supreme with no prior experience as a judge. Rave: I sold or gave almost everything away when I moved, so virtually nothing left to loose except the keys to the wine cellar. Rave: No critical nor worsening illnesses mentioned yet. ¡Buen fin de semana! M |
Lo siento,
Big Rave: I finally found the "definitive" free site for foreign language keyboards: www.starr.net/is/type/KBH.html or, more practical, the International Accent Marks and Diacritical "ALT Key codes and Charts" at www.starr/net/is/type/altnum.htm M |
Rave: son will be coming home for a visit at Christmas. He lives in San Diego and my wife has made several trips to see him. This is his first return in 3 years!
Rave: the good news from SunshineSue. Rant: folks so smart they need to tell others that they "don't get it". Rave: RED SOX beat White Socks leading to Schilling in Game 4. Rave: Chicago employers lose millions of $$$ to hooky playing South Siders. Rave: Hot and muggy weather in NH slows leaf turning so camping trip to Franconia next weekend should be awesome. mm |
Rave--Plans are all made for going to Seattle for Thanksgiving. Will see the inlaws and all our old friends, and get to play tourist for a few days. We moved away about 18 months ago and really miss it.
Rant/Rave--Road rage lunatics. DH was the attempted victim this week on his way home from work. Took several calls to 911, but finally the wierdo left. Thank goodness DH used his smarts and ws just plain lucky to avoid any physical harm. We are guessing the guy was on drugs. Truly a strange experience for DH! Rave--Saw a real, live Beaver this week on one of my morning walks. He was about 15 ft from me. I kept an eye on him and he kept an eye on us, lol! Rave--A friend from WA was here staying with us this week. Always nice to see old friends. LoveItaly--So glad that the new insurance is an even better deal! Meetshare--LOL!!! You really never know where you will find things in a move. Eeva--One of my sons teachers always said that you never really know a student until you meet the parents, lol! SunshineSue--OMG, so glad that both incidents turned out ok! Very scary! Bennie--A field trip to a prison? With the info about the guards as well, I definitely would not let my children go either. |
TGIF!
Rave: It was a quick short week after beautiful, relaxing & fun long weekend in LBI (Long Beach Island, NJ). Weather was spectacular - we were swimming in a warm pool in October and had two great beach days too. Chowderfest was yum too! Confession for Buffalogirl - I did buy a Christmas present while at the beach...it felt good to be ahead of schedule even a little bit. Rave: Preparing for our N'Awilns themed Halloween party is motivating us to get lots of house projects wrapped up. Lots of positive RSVP's too! Rave: Only 2 weeks 'til the NJ/NY GTG and we've got about 20 Fodorites & spouses planning to attend! Rave: No snow here! Cloudy with rain predicted (my garden will be happy), but has been summer-like until this morning. Rave: Furniture getting installed in my new office next week! My new laptop should from Dell should be showing up any day now too. :) Rave: I might have a new(er) car by this time next week. We'll see if it's "meant to be"... Fingers crossed. Rave: DH loves the ipod nano I got him for his b-day last Tues. It's so tiny! Happy Weekend Everyone! ((#)) Trish |

rave: 3 day weekend!! whoo-hoo! rave: picked up a second job! and i start next week. rave: trip to barcelona (with my dad, and my bf) is booked! rave: looking forward to the holidays. rave: had such a nice w'end at home on long island last weekend!! saw my friends, went to my regular places, etc... rave: the people of nyc who just live there lives, regardless of whatever threats (be they true or false) there may be. we can handle it! jorr...where are you that there is snow? sunshinesue...my gosh! hard to believe! life is so crazy sometimes. so glad everyone came out o.k. |
Rant/Rave: The jewelry thread forced me to write. Two weeks ago my car was broken into and I lost a lot including earrings that were made from my original wedding ring. My rave is that now every time I go to my car and the windows are intact I'm thrilled!
Rave: My insurance adjustor thinks I'm funny Rave: It's Friday and hopefully I will soon be back to having a wallet, an ATM card, and checks-oh boy! |
Rave - Headed to the Beach for a week. Rant - Will Tammy (or whatever this weeks storms' name is) get out of the way so it doesn't rain all week ?
|
Rave= This time next week we'll be in Venice!
Rant= I'm sitting at my desk dreaming of Venice and it's COLD here! |
Great, swalter518!
Please keep it all in your memory so that you can tell me the details at the GTG in Dec. HAVE A GREAT TIME! And I'll tell YOU my tales, if the Sox bring home some glory. |
Rant: This has been a long week.
Rave: Today is Friday. Rave: Daughter is 19 months old and this toddler stage is so much fun. It's amazing to watch her make connections that she couldn't grasp before. Of course, she spends most of her time pretending to be a dog just like our dog. :) Have a nice, fall weekend everyone! |
Rave: Sue's family is ok
Rave: LI's good fortune to find insurance w/cheaper premiums...that's a first! Rant: Either I messed up or the mortgage co. did--either way, two payments were debited from our checking acct. this month. OUCH!! Rant: Trying to get this resolved has been a pain in the you know where! Rave: Friends and I have ressies to a hot restaurant tomorrow. It was in the top 50 of Atlanta... Rave: The fun, goofy fodorites who make me laugh Rave: Monday is a planning day--no students--can get some stuff done and maybe get caught up a bit. Rant: My niece's 5th bday is in 2wks and I haven't gotten her a present yet (have to ship it) and some of you overacheivers have started your Xmas shopping!!! (Any great ideas for the perfect 5yo bday present?? Am sick of buying her Barbie related stuff--) TGIF, everyone. Wishing all happy times, good health and no snow in Oct!! (That last one is for you, Jorr!) |
forgot to write my lost jewelry story...
in '94 my grandma got a new cross from my grandpa. i told her i liked her old one. and she took it right off and said to my grandpa, "go clean this up w/some jewelry cleaner..." and she gave it to me on the spot. i wore it for over 9 years. 2 years ago, just like that, one morning before starbucks, i realized it was gone. never did find it. i am still sick about it! nothing can compare. it was called "modern cross" and they found it in ireland. it's a take from the cross of st. brigid. and very unusual. i've never found anything like it even on the internet... |
OWJ - buy your niece two gifts - 1 inexpensive toy that she'll play with for a little while and then her parents can toss without guilt and the second could be a nicer gift that she won't appreciate now but will treasure as an adult. And if that gift is part of a collection of something then you'll be able to add to it in the future. For example I have been buying my niece a piece of silverware for every occasion. I've been doing it for 13 years now. By the time she is an adult she will have 8 or 10 place settings. Now I realize not everyone wants sterling silver but I think you get the idea. Other ideas could even be savings bonds or a deposit for her college fund. Toys can be expensive and have little lasting value for the most part.
