Fish Tacos?

Where can I get these in Anaheim? My brother said they are a MUST in SoCal.

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 25th, 2003 07:03 AM

There are several fast food chains that carry them in southern California: Rubio's, La Salsa and Wahoo's come to mind first. Fish tacos (usually made with mahi mahi, red snapper or similar mild-flavored whitefish) originated in Baja California and were actually brought across the border by the founder of Rubio's. There is a Rubio's in Stanton (Katella and Knott), which wouldn't be too far from Anaheim; there's no Rubio's in Anaheim proper. If you make it to South Coast Plaza in Costa Mesa, there's a Wahoo's there.

Some of the sit-down restaurants might carry fish tacos, but they're really known as a beach treat, best enjoyed watching the surf, so you'll have more luck with the fast-food places.

And flopmeister comes through in the pinch...! nicolette, the address flopmeister lists is for a Rubio's in Anaheim!

I see my error-- Rubio's website lists Anaheim in "LA Area" instead of "Orange County". Logical, I suppose.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is a fish taco?

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 25th, 2003 11:55 AM

Exactly what the name implies-- a soft taco with fish instead of ground beef. Some cooks use soft corn tortillas, others soft flour. The filling is deep-fried or grilled whitefish (here in southern CA it's often mahi mahi), topped with shredded white cabbage and anything else you want to add (green onions, salsa). Add a bit of sour cream or similar sauce, and a squeeze of lime, and you have heaven on a tortilla!!

and to follow, the inevitable troll post: what's better, wahoo's or rubios for fish tacos? We've got both here in the Denver metro area and i've never been to Rubios, but intend to try them this weekend!

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 25th, 2003 12:04 PM

I am lucky to have a Rubio's near my house (in Belmont Shore), so I go there quite a bit. There IS a Wahoo's near my office here in Santa Monica, but it gets really busy-- every time I'm around that block, I'm rushing somewhere, so I never get time. The fact Wahoo's gets so busy is a good sign. flop, does Wahoo's use flour or corn tortillas? And is it whitefish, or something meatier like ahi or shark?

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 25th, 2003 12:06 PM

Oh, and flop-- if you go to Rubio's this weekend, I also recommend the fish burritos. Very yummy.

Connie Jul 26th, 2003 02:51 PM

If you have a Cheesecake Factory in your area (they serve all kinds of food), they have the best fish tacos I have ever had.

MonicaRichards Jul 26th, 2003 03:01 PM

I love the shrimp burritos at Rubios. There's only one in the SF bay area, in Valley Fair Mall in San Jose. A traffic nightmare, and forget about parking, but still I manage to go there for lunch.... Mmmmmmm.

Patty Jul 26th, 2003 03:07 PM

I like the grilled fish tacos. The regular (fried) ones are also good. My husband loves their lobster burrito. We have one near our house. I remember stopping at Rubio's whenever we were in San Diego back before they expanded into other markets.

nicolette Jul 27th, 2003 05:03 AM

I am not from CA so I don't know where Stanton is. I found Rubios website, and there is one at the Block at Orange. I think I will go there. Can't wait to try these. Thanks to everybody.

You can always search the boards at Chowhound.com for the definitive answers to food quests.

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 28th, 2003 07:35 AM

I'm going to say that if you want fish tacos, you HAVE to start at either Rubio's or Wahoo's. Rubio's is the original purveyor here in California (in San Diego, I believe), and Wahoo's is an Orange County institution. The Cheesecake Factory is a nationwide chain, and fine as those fish tacos may be (I have my doubts-- Cheesecake Factory impresses me with their huge QUANTITIES of food, not so much the QUALITY), it's just not the same as getting it from the original places.

nicolette, flopmeister posted the address for a Rubio's on Euclid in Anaheim. It's 520 North Euclid, just north of the I-5 at Anaheim Plaza.

Connie Jul 28th, 2003 08:36 AM

Well, since I don't live in Southern California and since I hardly ever see fish tacos on any menu in any of my travels, the Cheeesecake Factory is a great place for me (and others) to get fish tacos.

I can't imagine they could be much better anywhere else. I found them to be great and look for them everywhere I go.

I've tried them in an upscale Jackson, Wyoming restaurant and they were terrible compared to the ones I had at the Cheesecake Factory.

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 28th, 2003 08:45 AM

I'm sure they're nice and tasty at the Cheesecake Factory. It's a chain, and their quality is consistent from place to place, no question. But wouldn't it be interesting to, just once, actually have them at a restaurant descended from the first place that served them in the US?

And are you really surprised that Jackson, Wyoming isn't the best place to get a good fish taco?! Which, by the way, isn't really an upscale delicacy. A fish taco is something you eat at a beachfront joint with a good cold beer and chips and salsa, after a day of surfing or body-boarding (or walking around).

Connie Jul 28th, 2003 09:25 AM

You're not getting my drift.

Fish tacos are almost non existent outside of California. A lot of people have never even heard of them.

I'm trying to give people outside of California a place to get good fish tacos.

I have nothing against eating them at a stand. I would rather eat somewhere like that than in an upscale place----it's just the only place I've ever found them---and I look for them everywhere we go.

rjw_lgb_ca Jul 28th, 2003 09:29 AM

OK, OK, Connie, I get it. I'm just noting that they are a nice treat to seek out when you're visiting this area.
