Joe Alllen is perfect for a quick pre or post theater meal.

Clematis, the Zagat guide doesn't list Foley's as having a pre theater prix fixe. Doesn't mean they don't have one. You might want to call 212 261 5200. They list the avg. cost for a meal as $52. I THINK they include one drink in this price.

I'm not a big fan of Times Sq restaurants (prefer other neighborhoods that tend to have better quality at better prices and less congestion) but recently discovered a very good and reasonable Italian, Cascina @ 647 Ninth Ave. (bet. 45th & 46th Sts.). My husband said the calamari was the best he ever had and my veal chop was delicious. They also have a brick oven for individual sized pizza and offer a pre-theater prix fix menu (I think at $24). Playbill.com has a 10% off coupon.

I actually work in this area of town and I highly recommend "Culinaria", a small Italian restaurant on 40th between 7th and 8th, on the south side of the street.
The food is really incredible, and I have eaten at many "Italian" restaurants on NYC, it is one of my favorits. When we have an office party, we go to Carmine's. The portions there are too big, but it's fun, and I love those paintings they have on the walls... |
We're recently back from a trip where we saw several Broadway shows and ate about three times in the Times Square area.
Foley's Fish House was memorable because of the spectacular view. The view was even better than I expected and we spent much of the meal enjoying it. But the food was fine too. Orso's was fine, but I don't understand why it's so hard to get a reservation there. The food to me seemed no different than many other nice Italian restaurants. Le Madeleine was nice, although my salad had too much salt. Probably just a one time glitch, though, and I'd eat there again. They had a nice prix fixe menu for theater-goers. |
Blue Fin rocks. Victor's for Cuban. Orso for Italian. B. Smith for people watching. BB King's for the music. One thing about Times Square: if you aren't going to see a show, arrive at 7:45 after the pre-theater crowd has emptied out.

We like Virgil's Real Barbecue on W. 44th St. You can go to their web site, www.virgilsbbq.com to take a look at their menu.

B.Smith has terrific seafood dishes with a caribbean flavor and is also within walking distance of the theater...
B. Smith Restaurant 320 West 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. "Restaurant Row". 212-315-1100. Average main course is $17. Featuring Global Eclectic Cuisine from around the world it offers quite an exquisite menu and the favorite item to try is the Algier's Seared Salmon with braised beluga lentils, harissa raita. The décor is typical Barbara Smith original elegance. Open for Brunch, call ahead |
I'd recommend Becco, but my daughter goes to Orso and has seen a number of celebrities there. Last time she went she sat next to Selma Hayek and the cast of Saturday Night Live!

DB Bistro Moderne. check it out on New York City search...can be pricey though.
