Favorite restaurant near Times Square?

What's your favorite restaurant in the theatre district, closer to Times Sq?

carte005 May 6th, 2003 10:38 AM

For a casual meal, I like Carmine's. It is family-style Italian dining--meaning you order a few dishes for the group and share. The food is good, and the atmosphere is fun.

BuzzyJ May 6th, 2003 11:00 AM

Chez Josephine and Becco...lots of reviews on this forum if you do a search.

mclaurie May 6th, 2003 11:46 AM

Don't have one favorite. I agree on Chez Josephine. Restaurant Row favorites Orso, Joe Allen, Barbetta & Lattanzi. One I haven't tried but would like to is DB Bistro.

djdave May 6th, 2003 12:12 PM

Anyone familiar with 44 Southwest? We have dinner reservations there before a show in July; I didn't see a review for it on the Fodor's website.

djkbooks May 6th, 2003 12:24 PM

Chez Josephine (visit every trip), Pierre au Tunnel, Le Madeleine, Le Rivage, Gaby Brasserie (at the Sofitel) (can you tell we like French?).

If you're dining pre-theater and not ravenous, the lobby lounge has a fantastic light menu at the Algonquin on 44th (5th/6th).

HowardR May 6th, 2003 12:28 PM

Glad to see so many endorsements for Chez Josephine, our favorite.
However, Clematis, I have the usual questions: What type of food? How much do you want to spend?

Delvecchio May 6th, 2003 08:12 PM

Another vote for Joe Allen on Restaurant Row.

Clematis May 6th, 2003 08:19 PM

Thank you all for giving us some suggestions! Buzzy, will search that restaurant here. Howard, this will be pre-theatre on a Saturday night and because we are arriving that day we will not have a lot of time. No children. We like fish most of all and prefer lighter meals, not pastas. We are normally adventurous eaters but as we'll be flying the next day to Africa, we should eat lightly and cautiously. Price isn't a concern so much as time and convenience (ie - rather not get in a cab as we will have just ridden in one from the airport). Would like to keep it around 42-44th st., 200 block if possible.

Nikki May 7th, 2003 04:40 AM

Howard, I'm sorry, I can't help myself. Clematis says, "No children. We like fish..." So please don't recommend your favorite dish from Paris.

Statia May 7th, 2003 05:19 AM

I'm also a fan of Carmine's, but unfortunately haven't been able to try many of the others that I often see recommended here. I hope to try Becco and Chez Josephine (among others) on my next few of trips to the Big Apple.

mclaurie May 7th, 2003 05:29 AM

Clematis, I actually think Sardi's may be your best bet from a location standpoint. It's at 234 W 44th. The food's not great but certainly passable. It's famous, & fun to look at the caricatures on the wall. The lack of "excitement" in the food dept. may be exactly what you're looking for.
It's basic American food.
Chez Josephine is a bit further of a walk at 414 w 42nd but certainly wouldn't require a cab. The food is French & generally very good.

HowardR May 7th, 2003 05:54 AM

After your comments, Clematis, I think I'd recommend LeMadelaine on 43rd Street, just west of 9th Avenue. It's delightful French bistro-type place and right in the area you're looking at. Definitely call in advance for reservations (212-246-2993), especially for a Saturday night and ask to be seated in the Garden Room.
(PS: Nikki, I only recommend that dish to diners in Paris. It just doesn't taste the same in the USA!)

djkbooks May 7th, 2003 07:38 AM

Le Madeleine is excellent, but Le Rivage (see the menu at their website) has wonderful fish offerings (all we've tried have been perfectly prepared).

There's always Foley's Fish House at Times Square.

The food at Sardi's is not worthy of the prices.

If you like fish, Blue Fin is great. It's on Broadway between 46th and 47th.

Here's a link to some info:

Another vote for Foley's Fish House in Times Square. Great view of Times Square from every table in the restaurant.

Darvy_Kuntz Jul 7th, 2003 09:57 AM

Gaby Brasserie (at the Sofitel)

abram Jul 7th, 2003 03:48 PM

Zen Palate vegetarian Oriental--beautiful decor, delicious food, moderate prices.

jame Jul 7th, 2003 07:17 PM

I really like Johnnie's Italian Restaurant at 135 West 45th Street.

djdave Jul 8th, 2003 02:31 AM

Re: Foley's Fish House...how are the prices, and in particular how much is their pre-theater prix-fixe dinner? No prices are listed on their online menu.

Sweeney Jul 8th, 2003 07:33 AM

Joe Alllen is perfect for a quick pre or post theater meal.

mclaurie Jul 8th, 2003 07:56 AM

Clematis, the Zagat guide doesn't list Foley's as having a pre theater prix fixe. Doesn't mean they don't have one. You might want to call 212 261 5200. They list the avg. cost for a meal as $52. I THINK they include one drink in this price.

MFNYC Jul 8th, 2003 10:03 AM

I'm not a big fan of Times Sq restaurants (prefer other neighborhoods that tend to have better quality at better prices and less congestion) but recently discovered a very good and reasonable Italian, Cascina @ 647 Ninth Ave. (bet. 45th & 46th Sts.). My husband said the calamari was the best he ever had and my veal chop was delicious. They also have a brick oven for individual sized pizza and offer a pre-theater prix fix menu (I think at $24). Playbill.com has a 10% off coupon.

sognatrice Jul 8th, 2003 10:43 AM

I actually work in this area of town and I highly recommend "Culinaria", a small Italian restaurant on 40th between 7th and 8th, on the south side of the street.

The food is really incredible, and I have eaten at many "Italian" restaurants on NYC, it is one of my favorits. When we have an office party, we go to Carmine's.
The portions there are too big, but it's fun, and I love those paintings they have on the walls...

Miranda Jul 8th, 2003 08:50 PM

We're recently back from a trip where we saw several Broadway shows and ate about three times in the Times Square area.

Foley's Fish House was memorable because of the spectacular view. The view was even better than I expected and we spent much of the meal enjoying it. But the food was fine too.

Orso's was fine, but I don't understand why it's so hard to get a reservation there. The food to me seemed no different than many other nice Italian restaurants.

Le Madeleine was nice, although my salad had too much salt. Probably just a one time glitch, though, and I'd eat there again. They had a nice prix fixe menu for theater-goers.

Fast_Freddy Jul 11th, 2003 12:13 PM

Blue Fin rocks. Victor's for Cuban. Orso for Italian. B. Smith for people watching. BB King's for the music. One thing about Times Square: if you aren't going to see a show, arrive at 7:45 after the pre-theater crowd has emptied out.

Sara Jul 12th, 2003 09:32 PM

We like Virgil's Real Barbecue on W. 44th St. You can go to their web site, www.virgilsbbq.com to take a look at their menu.

andy Jul 12th, 2003 09:56 PM

B.Smith has terrific seafood dishes with a caribbean flavor and is also within walking distance of the theater...

B. Smith Restaurant
320 West 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenue. "Restaurant Row". 212-315-1100. Average main course is $17. Featuring Global Eclectic Cuisine from around the world it offers quite an exquisite menu and the favorite item to try is the Algier's Seared Salmon with braised beluga lentils, harissa raita. The décor is typical Barbara Smith original elegance. Open for Brunch, call ahead

rbnwdln Jul 13th, 2003 06:48 AM

I'd recommend Becco, but my daughter goes to Orso and has seen a number of celebrities there. Last time she went she sat next to Selma Hayek and the cast of Saturday Night Live!

tskobo Jul 14th, 2003 10:24 AM

DB Bistro Moderne. check it out on New York City search...can be pricey though.
