Favorite places in the US for homestyle cooking

I live in Dallas and there is a restaurant called Celebration that serves family style. Wonderful Pot Roast and Chicken Fried Steak. Just curious what are your favorites.

avy May 2nd, 2002 12:50 PM

In Omaha, there is a dive in a not so nice area, called The 11-Worth cafe-great chicken fried steak w/ double mashed potatoes, and lots of gravy!! (to go though ie.."not so nice area"

Anna May 2nd, 2002 01:18 PM

Now I am getting reallllllll hungry!!!

xxx May 2nd, 2002 02:16 PM

This just goes to show you what haute cuisine is considered in america. Such lack of taste.

bubba May 2nd, 2002 02:20 PM

How about Threadgills in Austin! Be sure and bring your Mastercard cause they don't accept American Express!!

Tar Heel May 2nd, 2002 02:29 PM

Hey, back off, "xx" -- the question specifies "homestyle" cooking, which quite clearly has nothing to do with "haute cuisine." Take that stupid ax and grind it somewhere else.<BR><BR>Now then: you want Mama Dip's in Chapel Hill, NC. Her cooking has been featured on ABC GMA, the food channel, etc., and her cookbook has been a bestseller. You only think you know what Southern Fried Chicken is all about until you've actually tasted hers, not to mention her great Sunday breakfast. Sweet potato pie? And as for the barbecue......!<BR><BR>She now has her own website, which makes things just a tad less homey IMHO, but at least you can check it out: www.mamadips.com

Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House in Savannah, GA.

CMS May 2nd, 2002 06:28 PM

On our honeymoon, we went to Amelia Island, FL. There is place there called the Florida House Inn. You can also stay there. It is family style and they bring the food out to you and keep bringing it for as long as you eat it! Fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, biscuits with honey, greens, banana pudding, pie etc... The lunch was like $6 or $7!!! The cook's name was Ms. Ella...excellent food!

xxx's doctor May 2nd, 2002 06:46 PM

xxx go blow yourself, you miserable fuck...

me4you May 3rd, 2002 08:29 AM

I have tried Mama Dip's and wasn't<BR>at all impressed. Very over-rated.

linda May 3rd, 2002 08:33 AM

Hey- don't use that f word around us Southern ladies! Unless it's FRY yourself, LOL! Shakertown Village in Harrodsburg, KY. Bowls and bowls passed down the tables of one delicious thing after another, youm.

OK Cafe in Atlanta, GA. Best chicken pot pie and mashed potatoes anywhere!

Paige May 3rd, 2002 09:03 AM

OK Cafe is good. I'd forgotten about that. My favorite is Slogar's in Crested Butte, CO.

hans May 3rd, 2002 09:06 AM

Rexall Pharmacy in Duluth, GA (Atlanta) for lunch

Sharon May 3rd, 2002 09:06 AM

Wishbone, Chicago IL

alex May 3rd, 2002 09:11 AM

Your moms were apparently all much better cooks than mine. My idea of "homestyle cooking" is Kitsch'n on Roscoe in Chicago (in Roscoe Village) - mac & cheese, fish sticks, meatloaf. The decor also reminds me of being a kid in the 70's. Now, if only I could find a place that serves chicken meat chopped up and stirred into Rice-a-Roni, it would be just like home.

ar May 3rd, 2002 09:56 AM

at Kitsch'n in Chicago you can were your pj's and they have pop tarts on the menu

alex May 3rd, 2002 10:03 AM

And Twinkies.

martha python May 3rd, 2002 10:18 AM

Another vote for Mrs. Wilkes in Savannah.<BR>Biscuits at the Roanoker (in Roanoke, VA)

jj May 3rd, 2002 10:23 AM

I've been to Mama Dip's once and wasn't very impressed. I thought it would be much better, what with all the write-ups.

c19 May 3rd, 2002 01:56 PM

The Machine Shed in Des Moines, Iowa<BR>although its redicuosly greasy and filling

Faina May 3rd, 2002 02:24 PM

"Favorite places for homestyle cooking", 20 replies, and nobody mentioned grandma's kitchen? Who taught you to cook then?

You know for on the road travel - I actually like Cracker Barrel. Don't laugh! It's better than fast food and tastes home made

duh Jun 14th, 2002 12:14 PM

topping swear words

cd Jun 14th, 2002 12:44 PM

What do restaurants who advertise "homemade" really mean? They make it at home and bring it in??? If I wanted homemade, I'd stay home and make it.

Marge Jun 14th, 2002 12:50 PM

I'd have to go with Cracker BArrel or Silver Diner even though I rarely eat at those places.

mona Jun 14th, 2002 01:03 PM

The Brookville Hotel in Abilene, KS -- the most amazing fried chicken dinners. All you can eat. Wonderful!<BR>

me Jun 14th, 2002 01:14 PM

White Fence Farm in Denver!!! They serve family style. Everyone starts off with salads - kidney bean, coleslaw, pickled beets and the best corn fritters around. This is all you can eat. For an entree - they have wonderful fried chicken!! They also have a petting farm, a country store, live music on the weekends, carriage rides, an outside playground for the kids and a slide inside. It is a great place for the family!!

beachbum Jun 14th, 2002 01:26 PM

Can't remember the name (another senior moment) of the place close to the private airport in Palm Desert, CA that specializes in all you can eat chicken dinner. Just as good as mom used to make, and they're not kiddin when they say "all you can eat".<BR><BR>Also, when I'm on the road and tired of the endless string of cookie cutter franchise restaurants, I often stop at a truck stop. The small independent ones seem to be the best, especially at breakfast. Yummm...chicken fried steak!

joesorce Jun 14th, 2002 07:38 PM

Lesley's Cafe in Salisaw Oklahoma! Any place that puts Cherry Cobbler on the salad bar is alright by me! <BR><BR>Also Miss Mary Bobo's in Lynchburg, Tennessee. <BR><BR>www.jackdaniels.com/tennesseetable/requested.htm<BR><BR>Oh my mouth is WATERING!

Lani Jun 14th, 2002 07:48 PM

I can't believe no one has mentioned "Lady & Sons" in Savannah! Oh yum yum!!! THE BEST Southern home-cooking I've ever tasted, and I come from a family of great cooks! <BR><BR>Now, Mama Dip's in Chapel Hill? BIG disappointment. I just ate there last Saturday, and the fried chicken was dry, the biscuits not nearly as good as mine, and the coleslaw just okay. After all the hoopla over her, I expected MUCH MORE!<BR><BR>Go to "Lady & Sons" - you can't go wrong - everything is wonderful!!!

BTilke Jun 15th, 2002 03:50 AM

There are plenty of restaurants in the PA Dutch country that serve great family style food. And I don't just mean the tourist-oriented Amish decor theme places in the Lancaster area, but the "fancy" Dutch places in the more remote corners of Lehigh, Berks, Bucks and even Montgomery counties. Near Boyertown on Route 29, for example, there's a family style diner that serves great roast chicken or roast pork with homemade mashed potatoes and gravy. And I mean REALLY homemade. Last time, we were chatting with the waitress about the great mashed potatoes and she said "feel my arm--I'm the one who mashed them all this morning!" The diner also served all the usually PA Dutch favorites--sauerkraut, fresh veggies, bean salad, succotash (which I hate, but a lot of Dutchies love), creamed corn, fresh made potato rolls, shoo fly pie, etc. Cheap too. <BR>The decor is nothing to speak of and you have to eat early (before 7 pm) or the best stuff is gone, but it's typical of many restaurants in the area. And of course...no alcohol!

Lani Jun 15th, 2002 05:36 AM

I hate to start anything here, but that Pa. Dutch food just can't compete with good Southern cooking!!! It's not bad, just not like ours! <BR><BR>Forgot to say, in my previous post, that I also really like a good Cracker Barrel. They usually serve excellent food, especially for the money and convenience!

The Dillard House in Dillard, Georgia serves homestyle cooking that will make you go back again and again. We don't make a trip to the Smokies without stopping for breakfast or lunch. They keep bringing the food as long as you keep eating. For breakast there are about 6 meats (sausage, patty and smoked links, ham, bacon, country fried pork chops, bacon) along with a variety of muffins and biscuits, gravy (a southern beverage), grits, hashbrowns, eggs, cinnamon rolls, pancakes, and fresh fruit. Some people have to be helped out! What a feast!!!!!

savannah Jun 29th, 2002 04:42 PM

Here's another vote for Miss Mary Bobo's in Lynchburg, Tennessee. You have to make reservations months in advance. Food is served family style, and includes fried chicken, roast, Jack Daniels apple cobbler, mashed potatoes, etc. YUM! The Jack Daniels Distillery is just down the road. It's in a dry county - go figure!

Polly Jun 29th, 2002 08:40 PM

I grew up in the Savannah area and LOVE Mrs. Wilkes, but lately on the internet, I've been hearing about Lady and Sons. My friends who still live there (unfortunately, I had to move away) tell me it is over-rated. Would love to hear what some other Savannians think.

donna Jun 29th, 2002 08:46 PM

I live in the Savannah area. I LOVE Mrs. Wilkes Boarding House. I have also heard about Lady and Sons. Tried it once and was disappointed. I figured I hit it on a bad day, so I tried it again. From now on, only Mrs. Wilkes for me.
