Downtown Denver restaurants
Will be staying at the Grand Hyatt downtown. Any recommendations on close, decent restaurants? Don't need gourmet. Thanks, isy
|
Tell me what you like. There is maybe 50 restaurants within walking distance of the Hyatt.
|
Recently had a fantastic dinner at Rioja. Highly recommend reservations.
|
Cab rides close:
Rioja - maybe a tad gourmet in quality! Zengo - not for a single person though - best with more two or more |
My colleague had dinner alone the night before us at Rioja. He sat in the back at the counter overlooking the kitchen and the chef fed him goodies all night long. He had a blast.
|
We always like the Chophouse. It's in an historic railroad building in LoDo, and has everything from burgers to higher-end dinners.

Thanks all. My DH and I are just looking for decent, casual restaurants - American, Italian, whatever, nothing too exotic.

There's also Ted's on Larimer Square (Ted Turner's place), for bison burgers.

,,,,, Don't need gourmet ,,,,, Assume that is the code word for not too expensive. With that in mind, our favorite, casual restaurant in LoDo is the Wazee Supper Club -- obviously on Wazee -- west end. In the same area -- Dixions Dowtown Grill is very good. Two modest Mexican places -- Crocs on Market and Limes in Larimer Sq. We prefer Limes and Crocs is more of a sports (lots of TVs) bar. Limes is exclusively Mexcan. Crocs is a mix. Across the street from Limes is Del Mar Crab House and The Market. In the same block is a gelato place which is as close as your are going to get to Italian gelato. Also in the same area PF Chang's and Rio Grande -- both chains but decent and reasonable.
McCormick's Fish House (the chain) has a great happy hour that will take care of dinner for a couple of bucks. Back on the 16th Mall you have the Rialto Cafe and the Rock Bottom Brewery closer to your hotel. Rioja is great but more expensive than the above but more than worth the price. The Denver Chophouse, previously mentioned, is good but more expensive. The Capitol Grill on Larimer is the best steak house in Denver but you will pay for it. With the free 16th Street Mall shuttle bus, the whole downtown area including LoDo is geared towards walking. Parking is limited so leave the car behind. This should get your started. If you don't like this list, I have a few more off beat places for you. |
Regarding Lime (not Limes) on Larimer-- we have been there twice. We only went there the second time because we were in a bind. Our meals were two of the worst anywhere. I would not recommend that place. It's more a bar hangout than a decent place to eat.
Tamayo, at the corner of Larimer and 14th, is much better for Spanish food. But it's expensive. :)>- |
I know it is personal opinion, but we have never been disappointed in Lime during the half dozen or more times that we have been there. It has a big bar but it is separated from the dining area. It does attract a younger crowd especially early in the evening. I agree that Tamayo is good but it is expensive. I assume the OP was looking for more moderately price restaurants with good food.
|
That's so helpful, everyone. I have printed out this thread and am packing it. Thanks very much.

Please stop telling people about Rioja!
|
I know, I know ..... but they were looking for less expensive places.
|
It is going to be even harder for me to get a table. ;)
|
I know ---- but everytime we post it just kicks it back ot the top and more people read it. There is a number of other great places --- the Dipping Grill and Strings althought it is not in LoDo. Strings' Sunday night 5280 special is well worth it.

fmpden,
What would be your suggestion for a restaurant(not too crazy) to eat & watch the Rockies Sunday night close to town. We may be dropping off 2 teenagers at the game. Betsy |
That could be tough. There are a lot of sports bars in the area but my guess is that they would be packed and noisy. I try Wazee. It has couple of TVs over the bar and some table seating right next to the bar. Crocs on Market across from the RTD hub might work. It is bigger with more tables. I try to think of some other places a little further away where you could park. We used to watch IU basketball at Zang Brewery over on 20th (?) just west of REI.
|
Believe it or not, Brothers Barbeque at 6th and Washington (not too far from downtown) has a TV and won't be too crazy. It's great, inexpensive food. Most people get takeout, so it doesn't get too crowded.
:)>- |
Brother BarBQ is a good thought. I am only familar with I-25/Arapahoe location but the food is good and it has bar and lots of TVs..
|
bookmarking for early next year's denver trip. Thanks.
|
I'll bet the Grand Hyatt lounge/bar will be showing the World Series games, too.
And the Cheesecake Factory downtown has TVs in its bar area, doesn't it? The game will be on wherever there's a TV in Denver, that's for sure! :)>- |
You are correct in that TVs will be every where. Trying to think of places that would permit you to camp for three hours. The Cheese Factory or the Hyatt probably not a good choice. You really want some type of a sports bar with cheap beer or at least moderately priced beer.
|
Here's your ticket: they just announced on the news in Denver tonight that a company is donating a super-gigantic outdoor screen set-up. It is being installed downtown at 15th and Arapahoe (I think), for viewing the World Series games.
They are setting up some chairs on the plaza. You can bring your own chairs and a cooler, but no glass containers. If our good weather holds, it will probably be a fun way to watch the games! :)>- |
Missed it. That is terrific. We have the theater Saturday afternoon so will drift in that direction.
|
Zang's sounds good, what about anything on E. Colfax, 17th?? We would eat dinner but stay a while, too. We are actually waiting to hear if we can get 2 more tickets for the game.
FYI, we live south of Parker & don't get to "dine" in town too often. I will be saving this list, also. By the way, if you get down our way, we really liked Union Bistro in Castle Rock. Betsy |
The Del Mar Crab House has closed and has been replaced by Osterio Marco. Good reviews--haven't tried it.
Wazee Supper Club had good pizza, Corrider 44--also on Larimer Square. Rialto Cafe. Rio Grande, Trios Enoteca. Cheesecake Factory. And now there's a Bubba Gumps. Sue |
