DON'T CAP AT ME!
For all the people out there who have just discovered the internet, writing in all
CAPS is very very annoying and is LIKE SCREAMING AT THE READER!!!!!! STOP THE MADDNESS!! |
Shouldn't you also be saying "Stop the misspelling!" It's madness, silly, not maddness.
I personally think a well-chosen capped word is great for emphasis, but entirely agree that a whole line of it makes my ears ache. Or is it my eyes? |
"Beachkomer" is a huge anti-drunk driving advocate.
And he hates all caps unless it's for an acronym. He meant to say stop the MADD-ness. |
I AM SO SORRY ALL CAPS BOTHERS YOU, SO MUCH, SOME OF US ARE OLDER, AND THEREFORE THE EYES DON'T SEE AS WELL, ALL CAPS MAKES IT EASIER FOR ME TO READ. I APOLOGIZE FOR MY SELFISHNESS AND NOT CONSIDERING YOUR NEEDS AND DESIRES OVER MY OWN NECESSITIES. I GUESS I BETTER JUST PUT MY CONTACTS AND GLASSES ON...YES I WEAR BOTH AT THE SAME TIME!! I AM NOT SCREAMING BY THE WAY, JUST EMBARRASSED BY MY OWN SELFISH NEEDS.
|
Oh, please, not the grammar/spelling lady. We don't need her. ((b))
Nurse -- You can adjust your screen and get stronger glasses. All Caps or no caps are very hard to read. ((b)) |
I just hope ARKANSASNURSE is retired. It scares me to think a working nurse can't see very well...LOL. Please don't take any offense, Nurse. I'm just joshing.
I don't mind if someone writes in all caps. My mother can't see very well, so I understand. Do whatever you wish, ArkansasNurse. If people don't want to read all caps, they don't have to. Personally, it bothers me more that so many people can't spell or use proper tenses. |
My mother types in all CAPS to me :( and I feel like I am a kid at home again and didn't make my bed. I find wearing reading glasses helps, Arkansasnurse. |
My Mom too! This must be an older Mom thing. I keep telling her that it's like she's scolding the reader, and that we can change her display setting instead. It's no use. She has just enough technology knowledge to be dangerous. And its never a matter of her not knowing what she's doing. Oh no. The computer is broken, the web site doesn't work, her e-mail account is faulty (!) . . . sigh . . . but I love her even if she does DRIVE ME NUTS!
|
Arkansasnurse, it is indeed accepted internet convention that ALL CAPS IS SHOUTING. If you think you need all-caps in order to read something, that still doesn't mean that you need to WRITE in all-caps, since you already know what that text says!
If you're using Internet Explorer, you can go to the top menu, under "View" and "Text Zoom" and enlarge all the on-screen the text by whatever percentage you need/want. |
:) snohflake, mine also blames the computer or the server!!
|
How many exclamation marks is enough? And for the record, all caps doesn't make it easier for me to read, esp. in a sans-serif font like the one I usually get in Fodors posts.
4-corners: A-minus. Spell it "grammar" and get a straight A! For extra credit, know that "all caps" looks like a plural subject and might seem to take "are" rather than "is" for the verb. However, we'll let you squeak by because you have a good parallel in the next clause, and so maybe we'll mentally insert a hyphen ("all-caps") and create a new, singular noun naming a particular style. I will now disappear back into my copy of Warriners. |
(Looking very innocent, whistling), ok, I was a pretty good English student in high school. Grammar! Yeah!!
Allow me to modify, please make an attempt at relatively decent grammar. Ahh, ok, nice capitalization and paragraphs to break up the text. :D |
All-caps, no-caps and spelling errors are not about being able to see better they are about lazyness.
|
Just how do you ya'll feel about the split infinitive?? ((b))
|
I'd like a banana split better.
|
I'm with DLN. I'll have a banana split made with Ben & Jerry's ice cream. No Bovine Growth Hormones for me!
PS: I think three exclamation points are sufficient to get the point across!!! |
And a couple of emoticons for extra emphasis. :)>-
|
OK, I've been wondering how to do emoticons on this site. Maybe if I could learn how to do that, I wouldn't use so many "..." and "!!!"
Please help me, dln. |
Heartburn...after I write this I'll top an old thread about emoticons for you.
|
Thanks, Dave, but I just found the posting about Emoticons ;;)
|
?SDRAWKCAB SPAC RAEW ELPOEP NEHW TUOBA WOH
|
capo, you are priceless :)
|
I am ot retired!!! But am a nurse manager and therefore rarely touch the patients, I heard the big sigh!! I do indeed wear readers with my contacts and in our company ALL CAPS is not indicative of shouting but anger. I wish that was the only thing I had to complain about!! So I have 2 questions:
1. Where is the book on internet etiquette, who wrote it? 2. Who decided all caps was to mean shouting, anger or whatever? PS You would be surprised what nurses and doctors now a days don't know, and can't do. |
One more question??? Does writing without caps mean anything? like i am whispering? just curious!!
|
Here you go. As you might notice at the top of the page, it was even written for nurses. See item 8.2.3.
http://www.carol-cooper.co.uk/book/chapter08.shtml You can find plenty of links if you do a search on google.com for netiquette, and I expect that all these sources will agree about the caps/shouting convention. Like many internet conventions, its origins are lost in the early mists of internet time (i.e., the 1980s). |
I'm sorry but personally I feel that if someone writing in all caps bothers you that much then you really need to take some time away from the internet.
|
Not that many CAPS around as there are YAPS, those posters who love to see their name in print and stretch out a thread by reposting like
DREAMING OF THE READER! |
Little: I agree! If someone writing in all CAPS disturbs you, then you need to chill out and take a walk. Life is too short to get ticked off about such trivial things.
Also, in the netiquette site (http://www.carol-cooper.co.uk/book/chapter08.shtml) under item No. 8.3.4 it discusses TOLERANCE of others. I apologize to anyone I may have offended about grammar/spelling errors. I realize not everyone visiting these sites are from the U.S. and they may spell words differently or not understand English rules (heck, there are loads of people from the U.S. who can't use proper English :D ) |
THNAK YOU LITTLES AND HEARTBURN3, I mean, thank you littles and heartburn3.
As for the spelling, sometimes we just hit the wrong key!! |
This is not about bad eyesight or not knowing how to type. It's about people who are lazy and careless. For these people it takes too much effort to look into a dictionary and they certainly won't spend the time to Capitalize properly.
For the Arknurse: If you can't read your computer screen and you can't type without making errors, are you contributing to your hospital's medical mistakes? |
GENE GENE GENE! Calm down about the spelling and grammar. It's not laziness or carelessness, it's the punchline that does it. You see, if you're reading a post and a great answer pops into your head, you have to type really, really fast to beat someone else to...what else, the punchline! That means you can't preview your reply. So sometimes the technical bits like correct spelling and grammer suffer.
Sometimes it leads to unintentional hilarity. You can see this first hand if you visit the European forum. Check the post about crossword puzzles (not hard to find; it's running right now). Our very own Scarlett spelled "passport" wrong in her haste to post the correct answer. Read on and you will see how Capo made very fine use of her blip. :)>- |
Okay DLN you convinced me, I'm okay with all this as you made very good points. I just hope my own spelling won't deteriorate by constantly reading the typos and misspellings.
|
Gene, it probably will. Did you notice I spelled grammar both correctly and not? There's something about a keyboard that makes you do this at alarming frequency, I'm sorry to say. (I spell beautifully in longhand.)
|
It absolutely amazes me how little it takes sometimes to keep people amused for hours on end...I think it must be the same sort of mechanism that the current President uses so well.
|
Oh swell! now I am known, not for my great beauty and charm but for my misspelling!! Setting examples for all who come after me~ :D Gene, as in my case, I was typing fast and not previewing my reply. Early mornings and late evenings, my typos can be quite interesting! But I have been known to write a perfect essay without one mistake so let's blame it on the KeyBoard!!! |
Gene - since you are so concerned about spelling, although you seem not to attribute it to being lazy, you should learn how to spell "laziness", which you spelled "lazyness" in your first post.
:) Karen |
Damn, that sentence was supposed to be "you don't seem to attribute it to being lazy ANYMORE" since you were persuaded by others' arguments.
See what happens when we all type fast? :D K |
This is a funny little story to make Scarlett feel better, since I mentioned her spelling error!
On the European forum I was reading someone's Italy trip report. Someone, who shall remain nameless, commented that she loved Italy and she even lost five pounds while there. Of course I wanted to know all about it, so I replied to the post asking how on earth she managed to do that! Well, that brazen hussy :-d created a post entitled "My trip to Italy or How I lost 5 pounds!" The first line went something like this "Since dln specifically asked how I lost five pounds..." Oh swell! As long as that post was on the boards, everyone probably thought I was a real two-ton Tessie. My husband couldn't stop laughing. At least she didn't do it all in CAPS. |
LOL, dln, :D I imagine you tall and slender with short hair, brunette...close? Not two tons!! |
I knew you'd find this Scarlett! Now I'm just waiting for Intrepid to pop in and say that she's still amazed at how amused we all still are...
I'm an still average size 8, but 20 years ago I could comfortably "squeeze" into a size 6, and now I find (ouch!!!!) some size 10s aren't a bad fit! That's why I wanted to know about the five pound Italian miracle. Brown hair with lots of red in it--that's the Irish in me. |
