We now have three squad cars which provide tours of the area. You can also visit Wally's Garage or the jail. The "Fishin Hole" often plays over the town loudspeakers. Oh, and Barney's Cafe is open as is the Blue Bird Diner. We have a statue of Andy and Opie, but alas, none of Barney. Don Knotts family opposed a statue of him in our town so the proposed one was scotched (to much disappointment). A Barney lookalike is here doing special events on a pretty regular basis. Of course if one is really serious about wanting to visit Mayberry, come during Mayberry Days in September.
Y'all come on down. |
I'd rather visit the jail, and put my feet up on the desk.
Well,Sylvia, you can..and someone will take your picture. Or you can take a nap in Otis' bed...your choice.
LOL, when you said Andy Taylor, I thought you meant one of the original guys from Duran Duran!
Been in the UK too long, I'm forgetting my American roots. |
Well, dang, cmcfong - I'm gonna have to mosey over to Mayberry on the 23rd before the Asheville GTG on the 24th.
In case anyone else is interested - http://www.visitmayberry.com/northca...&Year=2006 schedule of events - http://www.surryarts.org/main/displa...ays/index.html |
Last time we were in Mt. Airy, we stayed at the Mayberry B & B. It was a quick walk to downtown and the owners were very nice. Mt. Airy is very near and dear to us as we used to visit a lot when my in-laws lived on Ground Hog Mountain. And, we have an acre of land up the road apiece in Orchard Gap. Oh, BTW, our last name is...Mayberry.
Starrsville, right now my schedule has me here on 9/23. Could I buy you lunch?
Sure. That would be great! I did a mapquest plan earlier today and I think I'll end up the week in Spartanburg and drive up Sat. morning. Woo-hoo! I'll bring labs pictures! :-)
OMG, cmcfong! Now we're talking . . . THAT is exactly what I had in mind. I have got to get to Mayberry now! Ah, I mean, Mt. Airy!!! ;-)
Come on, BG! Lunch on 9/23 at the diner! Then, mosey over for the Asheville GTG on the 24th.
You are on, Starrsville. And BayouGal, we can always get a table for three! Come on up or will you be in the Tetons that week? If so, we can take a raincheck.
Starrsville, give me an ETA and let's meet at Goobers (you may recall I told you about their incredible milkshakes). We don't have to dine there. It should be about 3.5 hours from Spartanburg. Goobers is on US 52N so it is pretty easy to find. I will arm myself with a few photos of the five pups who live with me. Unfortunately they won't be with me, Mt. Airy has yet to discover the charms of allowing dogs in restaurants. Not quite the Paris of the South. |
How about noon. High noon. (I can almost see Barney on the street with his hand on the holster! :-) )
PS glad to see the review of the Mayberry b and b. There are a number of really cute ones in the area and I had not talked to anyone who has stayed at that particular one.
High noon it is. This is so much fun, Starrsville! I am looking forward to it.
Has anyone heard from bonniebroad lately? Where has she been hiding?
Someone needs to bump the Asheville GTG thread - but I'm trying to clean house and pack this afternoon. |
Oh, Starrsy and Cmcfong, I would LOVE to go, and I'd be there except we'll be flying into N.O. from our Yellowstone trip on the 23rd. I will definitely take you both up on that rain check, though! I'd love to meet both of you, face-to-face, that is!:)
cmcfong - If I'm not mistaken, there was (is?) a bluegrass jam session on Sunday afternoon. My husband brought his guitar and had a great time.
I guess right about now we're missing or just missed the cherries at Levering's Orchard. |
OK, Bayou Gal you get a raincheck PROVIDED you do a really good trip report on Yellowstone and Grand Teton (which you are going to love).
Ms Mayberry, you have missed the cherries, but if you come right away you can still catch the incredible white peaches at Levering...of course the apples are yet to come. My grandparents went to that orchard in the twenties (my mom, now 92, remembers going as a child). Their fruit is truly special. I am up there every couple of weeks. Frank is doing an outdoor theatre now which is fun. A lot of original drama. You need to come on back soon. |
This has been an interesting thread, but all day long, I can't get that friggin' whistle out of my head. :-s
A common ailment, PM. You probably need a day or two here to clear your head. Starrsville and I would love to have you join us.
