Do you have a favorite place you travel yearly that isn't costly?
Wondering if you have a yearly vacation destination that you don't mind going each year because it isn't expensive? I know some friends who like to travel to Myrtle Beach or Vegas yearly cause it's cheap airfare and hotel. But they still take other vacations each year also that are more expensive.

I live in Los Angeles and travel to Arizona each year. I fly Southwest ($58 roundtrip + tax and fees), I get the car through Priceline ($16-$20 a day) and I stay at the Hilton East Mesa
($30 a day on Priceline). It is a nice break from Los Angeles that is only 1 hour away by plane and the price can't be beat.) |

Myrtle beach every year? Wow. I would prefer the Charleston area or even Savannah for charm AND beach. But, one of my favorite areas in New Orleans!
Also, I hop down to the Cancun/Mayan Riviera for less than you might think on charters out of Atlanta almost every year! |
Well, don't laugh but mine is Europe. WE spend several months every year there, and our per day expenditure is always less than our destinations in the US. (Airfare not included, because we always use FF miles for the European tickets). In 2001 we didn't go to Europe, but a driving trip in the US and Canada including Alaska. We were WAY over in budget on that one. Next year, we're also thinking of sticking to Canada and the US, and already I'm finding hotels more expensive than their European counterparts.

Englewood, FL...My cousin and I head there every April vacation (we are teachers) and stay with our grandfather in his condo. It's a great cheap vacation, and a way to grab a quick tan over school vacation. The beaches in that area of FL are great, and we onlt pay for airfare and some dinners out.

Yes, I do a road trip to the Hamptons and the Berkshires every summer for at least a week each . It's not only cheap - its' practically free. All you need are friends who live there - then all it costs is a really nice hostess present and a couple of good dinners for the hosts.

Hmmm... I'd say Canada for us. We can drive there. We were doing Vegas 4 yrs in a row. Haven't been in a couple of years?

We seem to go to Memphis ( Live in St.Louis) it is a easy 4 hour drive, good BBQ, fun jazz, stay at Marriott w/ rewwards. We just go for the weekend. The Pyramid there hosts terrific exhibitions - "Treasures of the Czar", British Muuseum artifacts, etc... so we try to coordinate the trip when one of the exhibitions is going on.
It usually is a very spontaneous decision, several days before. I use the my other time "planning" my bigger trips to farther places in the US or Europe . anne |
My husband and I go to Memphis too! It's just about 2 to 2 1/2 hours away (depending on traffic!) and we always book hotels through priceline. There's lots of great food to be found, with BBQ being one thing we usually have to eat while in town (we are Neely's fans). We're also fans of the Wonders Exhibits at the Pryamid and enjoy many of the broadway shows that come to the Orpheum. Beale Street is always fun and interesting, and I can usually spend several hours shopping around the city too. Memphis is really a great weekend get-away for us--my husband is trying to talk me into a quick trip now, as a matter of fact.

Isla Mujeres, off the coast of Cancun. Cheap food and hotels, just watch for airfare specials and we're off. Jean

Any trip camping is cheap. We spend two weeks every summer all over the Rockies and spend no more than $20 (usually less) a night and cook most of our meals.
We couldn't afford to stay in hotels that many nights and eat out three meals a day. Then you throw in free or cheap activities like hiking, fishing, canoeing, sightseeing, etc. This summer we camped at 10,000' with a fabulous view of the continental divide, right by a mountain stream, way out of any town. Priceless! |
Well, "isn't costly" is relative, but my brother and his wife split a house rental on Longboat Key (right on the Gulf) each year with me and my husband. It's $1300 for the week and we have a nice comfortable house and usually catch our dinner 100 feet from the kutchen.

San Francisco. it isn't costly because my family lives there, so the only real investment is the airline ticket and i can usually find a good rate if i start looking several months ahead of time. i can't see the day i say "i've spent enough time in San Franciso". it is just SO great.

Nice to read peoples favorite vacation spots each year. The Memphis bbq sounds good! Anymore?

I'd say most people can enjoy local daytrips/weekend trips in their area. Do the research on the Internet and you might be pleasantly surprised. Just last Saturday I drove to Newell, WV to shop at the Fiestaware Factory's store and in that area was the Wheeling Down and the Ceramic Pottery Museum over the Ohio River in East Liverpool, OH. Check out the county fairs in your area. To be honest, my days of lying around on a beach at a crowded resort are over with too many events and places to go - forget the beach.

My parents' house is on a lake in NH, not far from the mountains. We hike, swim, kayak, go antiquing etc., all free activities. Cheap flights from DC are about $120.
Friends and I also go to Dewey Beach. A bunch of us rent a house - so the per person cost is not that much. Karen |
Yosemite National Park is only 4 hours away. We got there every year in our motorhome either in the spring or fall. The spring is my favorite time. We like to bike, hike and just relax in the beautiful scenery. This is our cheap vacation fix, then we go on a 2 - 4 week trip in the summer.
